Title: THE iDOLM@STER (Xbox 360) Fan Translation
Post by: Okayu on January 28, 2015, 04:04:03 pm
[September 5th 2017 Update] This didn't really go as planned at all. However I want to reassure that I still have plans to work on this project.

Considering it's the tenth anniversary of iDOLM@STER and the SP project is currently stalled I was considering translating idolmaster 1 one communication at a time. It would start with the routes not touched upon in SP as of writing this which are Azusa, Ritsuko, Ami/Mami, and Miki. This would be done similar to old translations where the communications and story events are subtitled over (example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0mb3Eni33A ) instead of inserted into the game like SP. Since this would take quite awhile to do that's why I would like to start on it as soon as possible so hopefully a good amount is done before the anniversary date. What are your thoughts on this idea?
---
Notes: Untranslated in SP idols will be done first. After those, translated in SP idols will be next. The order is listed below. Some communications were censored in SP due to the stricter rating so to avoid any errors these will be redone rather than reusing from the SP translation. Awakened Miki will be included with Miki. Changes to the below section will be made as needed. If you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread.
---
Note: This thread is also for discussing the work in progress xbox 360 version of idolmaster translation

Sounds exciting, good luck with your endeavors! That means we can finally add some route descriptions for 765 on the wiki! Ah, I guess this would also be a good opportunity to mention that Dearly Stars is in the process of having its text ripped. /@/ is doing it's best to translate what it can and insert it back into the game. This year is certainly turning out to be interesting!

Yeah, I've heard about that. I wish them good luck on that along with the other translations they have in store.

I also wish you good luck, Okayu. It'll give a newbie like me the opportunity to find out how these characters were back in the early days.

This newbie too! ^^;

Good luck, and don't overwork yourself!

Good luck with the translation; I would help if I knew Japanese, but I'm afraid I'm pretty useless on that front. I'd personally like to see Azusa's route translated first, but of course its all up to you guys.

Certainly the bold proposition, but given your prowess in said language I feel there's no better man for the job. I'll be one looking forward to Ritsuko the most.

Since it seems okay with you all I'll get started then.

Currently adding the text titles to the mail pastebins. Then will add a list of communications to the route pastebins.

All the intro mails for each idol are done, anything that seems off or that I should fix?

Looking good so far!

Those Chihaya mails made me laugh-I can literally see her serious face in every one of them.

I'm glad you're doing these; allows us im@s newcomers to learn a how 765 was in the beginning.

Good luck with your work!

Does this format look okay for the subtitled videos?

Why did you use western name order? "Azusa Miura-sam" sounds strange.

I was trying to be consistent with Namco's official usage. Whenever the idols names are shown in English letters, and in Shiny Festa's English translation, the names are flipped to English order. The wiki also has the names flipped by the way. I prefer the Japanese order personally though

I don't know if the English version of Shiny Festa has honorfics or not, but if it does, it's translated badly. You can EITHER include honorfics using Japanese name order or use western name order. I prefer the former just like you.

They do use honorifics in the official release. The translation is okay, but they leave some things as is like "wai" that even fan translators would translate unless they're particularly you know. Although "fufu" seems to be translated as "hehe", "u-n" as "Mm" and "ara ara" as "ohh". Also I guess they're using "show" for "live" rather than "performance", I'll try to keep that in mind for future translations. Besides that though there doesn't seem to be much issue. I would prefer that over getting too carried away from the script like certain other western releases.

"ku" as "guh" sounds weird though. Now I'm imagining Chihya going "guh guh!". Personally I think of "ku" as something like "d'oh!" as in it's kind of a catchphrase for Chihaya rather than just a sound effect like the others above.

Made an account for the sole purpose of pointing this out.
A direct English translation of the Xbox games is possible, and considering that SP shares some text in common with Im@s 1, a decent amount of the translation has already been done.  I've already dumped the game's script in plain text, which can be found on yukipo.  Here's a test I did for the first meeting with Haruka with the translation taken from SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOIvY1JU82s

The first step to making something like this viable would be the creation of a tool to easily edit the script files.  Although I'm not able to write such a tool myself, I could give specifications as to what the tool would need change within the files to make them work.  Also, although dumping the game's images is easy, I have had problems with editing and reinserting them.  Despite this, I was able to edit the game's text box graphic with a hex editor in order to fit three lines (to facilitate translation) like so:

How is emulation of XBOX360 even possible? The official site of xenia says they don't have any releases yet!

I wrote some scripts, so now text insertion is good too. Obviously there's untranslated stuff, so if anyone wants to help... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z54ePxkPzRc

Despite what this long video shows, most lines in the game's executable (like the character names) are now translated and working on console.

Still, this is pretty cool, especially after years of waiting for console translation to be possible...

Transliterated subtitles for all the songs are finished.
I would've liked to complete the menu-related stuff before moving onto another route, but I can't without translations.  :'(
So maybe Yayoi's route next or some more image editing or something...

It's a niche forum, everyone isn't going to reply to everything. (Moreso when a lot of the activity is in the mobage section who may or may not give a damn about what came before that)

As for me I have them added so we can keep in touch easier so I don't post in this thread much either.

So what's the status of this project? Has it been completed or not?

If it hasn't been completed, how can I start contributing? I understand Japanese to conversational degree and am confident in my ability to help out with the translation.
