Title: Leon Cosplay- Now 100% Complete!! Pictures on page 4!!
Post by: animagic4u on July 22, 2014, 07:02:08 am
Hello there everyone. I'm back from the dead with a new project; it's not Haruka. *shot*

Leon's Stage Outfit Cosplay
Percent Completion: 100%

First round completed pictures here -> http://forum.project-imas.com/index.php/topic,2133.msg55142.html#msg55142
(http://www.project-imas.com/w/images/thumb/7/7f/LeonPlaceholder.jpg/195px-LeonPlaceholder.jpg)

Tasks-
*Buy wig and dye it
*Crop Top- Partially completed, lining needs to be sewn in and straps need to be changed.
*Butterfly
*Main skirt- Pattern is cut out
*Skirt cover
*Hair piece
*Shoes
*Gloves and small accessories
*Buy circle lenses

So far I'm in the planning stage.
I'm thinking of using this pattern (http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/bodice-top-042013) for the top and drafting my own pattern for the skirt.

I will be keeping my progress here like previously with Scarlet Sprite. Hope to make progress soon!

Also if this turns out half way decent I will be wearing this at the Saboten convention Masq. Signed up for the Saboten Convention Masquerade!

It always amazes me when people make a great costume. Ironically, I guess I'm too busy playing video games and watching anime to learn how to make costumes from them.

What do you do about long wigs tangling throughout the day, though?

i'm looking forward to the result

But i think there is one more thing that you should do if you want to cosplay as Leon: Get color contact lenses.

I love your cosplays! I find it nice you're switching things up (haven't seen a Leon cosplayer outside Japan yet). Looking forward to it.

I used to have long hair myself (now I have Haruka hair) so I'm used to dealing with long hair. However, I'm also thinking about using the same gel one would use to set curls on the ends of the wig to help them keep shape. I'll have to be careful with the ends since I intend on dying them.

i'm looking forward to the result

Oh, of course! I actually just learned how to wear circle lenses last year so I'm confident there.

Thanks! It feels good to be the antagonist for once. Bwahahaha!

I found a free pattern for a tiered mini skirt  (http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/tiered-mini-skirt-032013) and I can simply take one of the tiers out of the skirt to make it work! Finding these patterns takes a lot of the hard work of drafting out of the equation.
Now the only parts that will need drafting are the over skirt pieces. I am planning on testing these in miniature before I move on.

Well, damn. This is something to look forward to, so I'm glad I caught this thread. Leon has quite the spunk, and her outfit accents that like crazy. May you have the best of fortunes to make for an awesome Leon! :3

Adding to what Naryoril said, wouldn't contacts become irritable after a while? Granted, I've never worn these, but I'm wary if the sexy heterochromia comes at a price. D:

I think this is an ambitious idea for you. Haven't heard much about Leon ever since One for All's launch, so its great to see her get SOME love. I'd just really like to see a picture of you in the finished product or at least photos of the costume in development. I dunno, I'm interested in development stuff. :p. Good luck to you, madam.

Good luck! Seeing you work hard on an imas cosplay kinda inspires me to finally get around to doing my own.

Thank you for the support!
I do get a little irritation with contact lenses occasionally, but for a photos I think I should be fine. I might not wear them to the con to prevent any irritation. Last year at PHXCC I wore green lenses with my Haruka cosplay and some of my foundation started getting in my eye which lead to a very uncomfortable time.

Thank you! I am planning on showing my full process as per my last few cosplay threads ! Look forward to it!

Good luck! Seeing you work hard on an imas cosplay kinda inspires me to finally get around to doing my own.

You should try it! I've learned so much by doing this, it's really a great experience! Hoping to learn more with this!

Some updates.

Here's how I start my process in drafting Leon's overskirt.
I start with a paper mockup that I make based on looking at her video.

Once I feel confident with the shape, I go to a 1/3 scale mock-up in some scrap fabrics I have. Some of you might know I am a doll collector and have many models available for doing mockups of my 1/1 scale clothing.

I sew together the mock-up and check where the pattern needs some improvement.

I like what I have so far! But to make the wings really pop I'm going to add some darts (for those of you who are not familiar with sewing/clothing terms, darts refers to stitching something like a 'pleat' into the fabric to make it contour to the body's curves).
Time to work on the 1/1 scale pattern based on what I made!

The measurements I used on the 1/3 scale version was her hip size + 1 inch (to allow overlap) and for the wings her hip size - 2 inches.

...Continued

I made a human scale pattern using some old wrapping paper I had laying around.

Unsurprisingly it looks like a butterfly.
Afterwards, I tried this out in some test fabric I had.
The upper part is good, but the wings still need some work!

No problem! I'd opt for contacts just when the time comes for pictures, then; the more convenience the merrier.

Speaking of, hurray for WIP pictures! \(^^)/

As someone verily oblivious to the ropes involved in doling out effective cosplay, it's really nice to take in all those meticulous steps.

There's a lot of failures that come up, and I think that people who don't cosplay themselves never get the chance to see it... I love showing that side of it too! It reminds me what to not screw up on the next time!

Small update, but the wig and contact lenses have been ordered!
Purchased the pattern for the top so just need to print it out and assemble it.

My lenses arrived today.

Sorry about not more updates. I haven't been able to work hard recently due to an ongoing illness I've been having. Once the weekend comes I'll start creating the top. :D

Question, how are you going to do the sequins on the top and skirt? That's the major thing keeping me from a Luxury cosplay (haven't decided on the idol but still).

They make sequin dot fabric. ^_^ It's much more simple than you think and it comes in about every color under the sun. I used it here in Scarlet Sprite:

It might be common sense, but if you want to use this fabric, line, line, line! Be very confident in your lining and turning skills if you want to work with this!
It is very thin and very scratchy!

Here's an image ( I stole) to show you what it looks like on the bolt like you would find it in a fabric store:

Ooo shiny! I love looking at this stuff. It makes me wanna do all the costumes!

I'm curious, do those lenses have a hole in the center to let in more oxygen? Since they're not corrective lenses, it should be possible.
Title: Re: Leon Cosplay- "Don't ever stop!"
Post by: Maka on July 31, 2014, 06:31:28 am
Thanks! I've seen that stuff in stores but I didn't know that was the kind you used.

Also, circle lenses don't have a hole. The pupil is just clear material.

That's an interesting question! I don't think any lenses are designed that way. I just imagine them being a nightmare to put in. If a lack of oxygen to one's eyes is a concern, (and it should be!) there are preventative steps one should take when wearing circle/cosmetic lenses.

-Don't wear them for too long (5 hours is usually my max)
-Definitely do not fall asleep in them
-Hydrate with eyedrops
-Stay away from heat (like grills)
-Don't swim in them

Thanks! I've seen that stuff in stores but I didn't know that was the kind you used.

Yes, I think it's what everyone uses! Good luck to you if you decide to make something!
Soft cottons make a good lining for this material. It seems a bit see-through so you want to pick something lighter or about the same color to line it with!

I can't repeat enough...this stuff is REAL itchy. Even in my Haruka cosplay the part of my arm touching my vest was a bit itchy.

Fascinating. I had a classmate who said that he never takes his contact lenses out, and he was a swimmer too! I've never used contact lenses, of any kind; I use glasses instead. But then again, my vision is actually pretty good so I hardly ever need them. Maybe I'll get contacts if when my vision gets worse. I can't imagine ever wearing circle lenses, though, but they do look good on cosplayers. ^^

Well damn, seems like you have the solution for everything so far -- I was about to bring up said sequins, what with this owing to Leon's authenticity.

As well, that's an awesome Haruka you've got there. Very pretty and the like~! ^^

Technology has come a long way and now they have lenses that you don't have to take out (for like 1 month I think.) I think wearing circle lenses is the more or less the same as wearing regular contact lenses except for the fact they are easier to tell which side is the 'right' side.

Yup! This costume will be a lot easier than Scarlet Sprite since when I made that it was my first costume ever and I had only been sewing for about a year. I've learned some more tricks since that time.

And thanks!

Update:

Started doing some work today. Couldn't go to the fabric store because my dad had to work some overtime.

So first, I already picked out my bodice pattern as you know.
When you buy a pattern online it comes in a big puzzle that you have to cut out and put together:

After I cut it out and assemble it the pieces look like this:

I had some left over fabric from Scarlet Sprite, so I figured to make a trial version
(http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/213/8/1/img_20140801_183326242_by_animagic4u-d7tb4zp.jpg)

Here is the result:

The overall fit is good, and the pattern takes very little fabric (Hooray!)

I need to modify the pattern to accommodate wider straps and use a less slippery lining, but I am extremely happy with the result so far. Can't wait to do this in the real fabric~!

Also this top is super comfy and lightweight. Love love love it!

Grand stuff so far. :D I take it you trace over the fabric, or cut along the edges with the patterns? The frills should be fun to do, too~.

Thanks!
On fabrics that aren't slippery like cottons I usually put the pattern down on the fabric and trace around the fabric with a water soluble pen.
On fabrics that are slippery like the sequin dot I'm working with here and the knit I will be using for the skirt, I pin the pattern down to the fabric very meticulously and cut around with it so I can get a precise cut.

I love doing frills! On my sewing machine I have an auto ruffler <3 It's a lot of fun.

Edit: My wig arrived today and I went fabric shopping as well!

Sewing is useful. I was surprised when I found out several of my classmates (in 400 level Computer Science classes) also love to sew!

The butterfly is now finished!

Started by cutting the butterfly shape out of heavy interfacing. It's like really heavy felt board.

Cut it in half to match the design of Leon's butterfly and attached the gradient fabric.

Pinned bias tape around it and sewed it on! Very time consuming!

You know, I'm pretty lazy too... The best time to cosplay is when you suddenly just have a whim to do something and then you buy some materials for it. I don't like backing out after investing money into it.

My last few cosplays (Street Hopper, Creamy Mami, and now this one) have been ideas I had just weeks before the con. Feels easier to be motivated when you've already signed up for the masquerade with the costume you haven't finished yet. ^_^;

So the skirt wings are almost complete.

I first started by making a shell out of stiff interfacing.

Once the shell is complete, I draped the black sequin dot fabric over it.

I sewed in the darts in trimmed the excess around the inner shell. Then I carefully glued this fabric to the shell and basted around the edges.

I carefully worked in the lining, giving the fabric some space to bunch a bit so when I'm wearing it it will be comfortable. (Think the same way the lining is 'bagged' in a jacket)

I repeated this process for the 'belt' part and then added a gold bias tape all the way around the edge:

Here's how it looks so far: (Getting really close!)

Whoa, that is a cool, genuine cosplay! Are you adding the belt and those little diamond things sticking on the tips of that skirt wings?

I'm also floored -- that's likely the toughest piece done for the most part. Even with steps detailed, I just can't wrap my head around the redonkulous effort that must've took. How long have you been doing cosplay? Your prowess there boggles the mind, as usual~. :3

Yes! Hunting for a belt currently. :3 And yes I will be adding the diamond thingies! They serve two purposes really- decoration and a way to help ease the corner bias into place so it looks nice from both sides!

Thank you!! <3 I also think this was one of the most difficult parts. I think the most difficult part was getting the BEAST of a shell into the sewing machine. Many awkward moments sewing the whole piece.

The first costume I ever made myself from scratch was Scarlet Sprite (http://forum.project-imas.com/index.php/topic,1646.0.html) and that was back in 2012. So I guess it's only been 2 years! At that time, I had only really been sewing for a year and I'm mostly self taught so I still think I have a lot to learn!

Gotta admit, this is pretty badass. Well done.

Quick question: How long do you think this took in general? Not counting other things like school, sleep, and other things besides this?

That is a great question!

Here's a rough estimate:

14 hours up until creating the skirt tails
6-8 hours of creating the skirt tails and finishing off everything else.

So probably somewhere in the 20~25 hour range for completion.

Jesus Christ, a whole day..... I guess being an artist, whether it be for drawing or costume design, requires a LOT of patience. But at least the process of doing things like this is usually fun. I'd like to assume you at least had fun doing this. :P

Wow! You look just like your avatar! :D

But you're missing a little gold chain... *shot*

Just kidding, that's insignificant! ;)

Acceleration. NOW.

But dang, that's great stuff. How much did it end up costing you? I actually had my mom make me a pair of shorts, and the fabric was more than I thought it would be.

Hehe, perhaps I will. ^_^; Then again...

And actually better/cheaper than I thought. I set myself a budget of $91 (weird number, I know) but it only cost me slightly over $70 for everything (fabric wise). It helps that I had coupons and such.

This is amazing! I thought cosplay was always bad, but now I know I was wrong!

Thank you so much! ! I'm glad I could change your opinion!

Just made my CD for the masquerade today! ^_^; Hope it all goes well!
Also, because I'm stupid, I'm learning the last 30 seconds (roughly) of Acceleration as part of my walk-on
