Title: Visual novels
Post by: Compassionate Sadist on February 11, 2012, 02:03:21 am
I haven't see an all-purpose visual novel thread anywhere yet, and I know I'm definitely not the only one who likes VN's on this forum. Feel free to share what you're playing (reading?) right now, recommendations,  etc.  I'm currently trying to complete Katawa Shoujo.

For me, I only played two of the three Key-VisualArts visual novels, Kanon and Clannad... Almost finished with the former, but the latter I haven't completed since the game is really long and I only completed two character arcs in that game (Kyou's and Kotomi's). Of course, I play with the eroge scenes off since they aren't that crucial to the story.

I'm a huge Key nerd. I'm a heavy eroge player though.
Moero Downhill Night was good. ^^ I loved the action...uh, the driving.

For some reason I can't play Katawa Shoujo...I feel like either I'll be offended or I'll offend someone with my opinion of it.

Afraid you can't do disabled girls? Don't worry about that. The H scenes are pretty normal, and would barely be of any significance. (This coming from a guy who has only done one route in the game)

I don't play a lot of VNs, only one I've finished is Planetarian (which I absolutely loved), and I'm currently reading Steins;Gate.  Anyone know of any VNs like Planetarian where there are little to no user choices?  I like just reading, not deciding and reloading.

It had the potential to be offensive, but the developers wanted to make a story where disabled people are just people who happen to have disabilities, instead of "HEY YOU GET TO SCREW A CHICK WITH NO ARMS!" I myself would have preferred no H-scenes (I don't enjoy watching het sex at all, so I usually play eroge for plot/characters/visuals/the lulz) but I didn't mind them in KS, where they're more "tasteful" and don't feel exploitative.

Kinetic visual novels involve no choices at all. Higurashi, Umineko, and Sekien No Inganock come to mind.

Aside from Katawa Shoujo and Hatoful Boyfriend, I don't really know many visual novels.

I'm currently trying to complete Katawa Shoujo.

I've just finished Lilly's route, though I turned off the adult scenes because they probably didn't add anything to the gameplay. ...And the random pictures of food they used instead were funny.

Haha totally forgot about  Hatoful Boyfriend. I must play for Nageki's sake.

I don't play a lot of VNs, but if I were to recommend one, I'd recommend Instant Brain. It felt like Ace Attorney games, trying to gather evidence (though in Instant Brain, you play a paparazzi, gathering photo evidence) to solve a kidnapping/murder. The game takes place in a futuristic Japan, in the dark world of show business. I absolutely loved it, and it was a great first jump into VNs for Cave.

Also, recorded this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzmXX4JzBRg), since I loved it. <3

Ugh I really want Instant Brain since it was by Cave, but I'm not exactly capable of reading it, so I'll have to wait for the rare chance that Rising Star Games picks it up (also AweOfShe, the more I see you post, the cooler you seem to be getting in my eyes, haha.  Nice Suee avatar and signature).

I guess we just have a lot in common. Im@s, cars, Cave, and now DJ Max? If you also like Falcom, then you've pretty much just hit every staple of mine, for gaming. XD

And I've wanted to write a translation guide for Instant Brain, but I'm 98% sure that I will burn out, while writing it part-way through.
Same reason why I never ended up writing Roadmaps/Guides for Im@s on XBLA/PS3T, despite the requests... D:

I heard the H-scenes added to the character development/overall experience, so I figured I'd just let them be. But now I really wanna see the "censorship" lol

And Hatoful Boyfriend...isn't that the one about pigeons?

I have quite a large VN backlog.  Currently slowly going through Umineko8.

Ahh no, I'm perfectly okay with H scenes.
I just tend to get overly offended by those kinds of games. The genre is a bit sensitive for my taste.

I prefer no emotional attachment if I can help it.

Oh, well I figured you'd be okay with ero stuff since you said you liked eroge~ But there's a good chance you'll become emotionally involved with the characters. It's that kind of story.

Geh. I don't want to get sobby over my computer. ;~;
I remember playing Narcissu the first time and I was fine...
I was testing a translating rig when I played it the second time and for some reason it felt 10x more sad...;~;

Btw, all of you key fans have great taste. I love you all. :D

Nobirdie understands my love for that game.

The text was all there, only on a black background, and the non-text H scenes were replaced by, like, croissants and other foods.

Haha totally forgot about  Hatoful Boyfriend. I must play for Nageki's sake.

Nageki was my favourite, along with most of the fanbase, I'm sure. I admit, I only played it at first because I thought it was a ridiculously hilarious idea, and then I got attached the characters... It was all very sad.

I'm a big fan of Steins;Gate, but that's about it for this genre.

I can't take eroge seriously since it's sometimes well-written (or terribly written) literature laced in smut. I had to pretty much skip every ero scene in Cross Channel just to get through it... awkward and unnecessary.

Well I know what you mean, sometimes it feels like it's ero just so it will sell better.
But if it's completely ero with no plot and such then you should know what you're getting into in the first place and it's not so bad.

They're called "nukige", not "eroge".

Wheel Country, Sunflower Girl.
(Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shōjo)

Has a great theme, a tiny heavy on the H-scenes though, but the story is nice.

I've been meaning to pick up those ones still. I may give the first game a whirl, since there's a Platinum Hits of it now.

There is a translation patch for the iOS version of Steins;Gate, so I've just been reading it on my iPad whenever I have spare time.

Years ago i'v read Yukisakura, because it was basically the only one i could buy in a language i understand and that seemed interesting.

After watching Amagami SS recently i tried once again to find some VNs, since i don't have a book i'm reading currently and i like to read in my bed for a while before sleeping. Thats when i found out Clannad and Kanon were VNs (i had often heard the animes were really good) and that Clannad is a non-ero-bishojou VN and that fan translations exist. I downloaded it, read it for a bit and then ordered the game.

Some further searching also resulted in fan translations of Kanon and Little Busters so i bought those 2 games as well and i have a running english Version of Kanon installed.

But still, currently i'm reading Clannad. First i played it without any guide and ended up in Fuuko's storyline, bad ending, that was really harsh. In the bad ending Tomoya goes to School with Fuuko to celebrate, he wakes up the next morning and doesn't remember anything. He then visits the sick Nagisa and then the game is over. Now i'm reading it with a guide, completed Fuuko's Arc and i'm now after the last choice in Kyou's arc. Poor Ryou, i wonder when and how Tomoya will muste the courage to tell her he actually loves Kyou instead of her. Every evening i read for about an hour on my laptop while lying in my bed before sleeping ;)

Btw: in a few days an english version of Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom will be released on the PSP. And it seems there will be an official english release of School Days (http://schooldays.us/)

I'm looking forward to the moment my japanese is good enough to be able to read stuff like that, i'd like to give Amagami a go. And of course Im@s and there are also some books (like the later Slayers light novels)

Oh the Kanon fan translation is quite excellent. ^^
I didn't know Little Busters was finished though. I must go buy it.

Do they have Ecstacy patched too?

honestly i don't know. I'v just seen the patch somewhere, but didn't download it yet since it'll take quite a while until i get to play it. But probably it's better if i do it tomorrow, who knows what will happen in the future and if i already have it i won't have to worry.

Btw: Finished Kyou's arc in Clannad just now. Poor Ryou, but fortunately she took it quite well and got a new boyfriend.

Definitely play Kappei's arc after that... although emotional towards the end, it has some pretty hilarious moments.

Me... well, i suppose i can be called an eroge/VN lover. My history goes all the way up to things like Kindan, Snow Drop and Kana Imouto (got Three Sisters' Story and some other old titles but never really played them). Out of that mound, i absolutely adore Kana Imouto, Planetarian, and Narcissu. I cried at the first two, and was badly shaken by the third. Of course, I also liked Katawa Shoujo and is totally on Team EmiRin.

For anyone looking for a left-field surprise, may i recommend Broken Hearted (http://www.9-11game.com/)? Like KS it's quite controversial (more so on the time of release, arguably), but the matter is handled reasonably well. It has quite a simplistic interface (very basic and quite an unpolished Renpy), graphics (lotsa stock photos), and music (MIDI goodness), but the writing is reasonably good.

I got myself into VNs last year in summer. VNs for women, to be specialized (Otome Games).

I played a lot of those Otome Games and still playing! x3 I'm really biased to them... *looks at all the games*

These are all the VNs / Otome Games, I played up until now or still playing:
AMNESIA (PSP)
BEYOND THE FUTURE -FIX THE TIME ARROWS- (PSP / PS3) <- still playing....
Gekka Ryouran ROMANCE (PSP)
Lucian Bee's RESURRECTION SUPERNOVA (PS2 / PSP)
Renai Banchou (PSP)
Starry Sky Series (for PSP, not PC)
STORM LOVER (PSP)
STORM LOVER Natsu Koi!! (PSP)
Uta no Prince-sama (PSP)
Uta no Prince-sama Music (PSP)

Games, I'm going to play, are these (when they arrive! 8D):
AMNESIA LATER (PSP)
Lucian Bee's EVIL VIOLET (PS2 / PSP)
Lucian Bee's JUSTICE YELLOW (PS2 / PSP)
Renai Banchou 2: MidnightLesson!!! (PSP) <- Have it already, will play it soon
Zettai Meikyuu Grimm: Nanatsu no Kagi to Rakuen no Otome (PSP) <- Have it already, will play it soon

Oops, that's now a long post.... Sorry for that! 8D *hides in a corner*

Heeee~ Hakuouki... I heard a lot of it but I don't want to play it myself. 8D It has too many Fandisks / Spin offs or whatever.... There are enough Otome Games with historical story coming out in the next months, so I don#t need it! :3

It's actually not so bad. At the most basic level, it's just the main Hakuouki game, the prequel, the fandisc, and this chibi game iirc. All the porting that went on kind of made the series' entirety seem crazy. And the PS3 Hakuouki game I heard was the fandisc and normal game combined or something?

whoah, tread necromancing at work :p

Anyway, since i posted here the last time i finished the fan translations of Clannad (all routes including after story) and Little Busters (all routes including true end)

Currently i'm reading Amagami Ebikore+ for the Vita in japanese. I started the last of the 6 routes yesterday and expect to finish it during my holidays. I'll leave it at getting the best end for each of the 6 girls, and the middle end for Rihoko.

I play "Katawa Shoujo", Hanako's route, without H scenes.
