I couldn't see another topic for this, but I apologise if I just missed it!

Anyway, who's been getting these? I haven't yet, but I'm sorely tempted. I thought I might hold out until a few more volumes are revealed to see what's in them. Plus, they're sooo expensive.

It probably won't happen, but I wish Namco would release them without the anime episodes. :(

I actually just bought the Limited Edition Box (I COULDN'T HELP IT ;D) so I'm looking forward to receiving my Vol. 1 (I also plan on getting the rest of them).....however, I did this after already having and playing the game for awhile and deeply regretting not having the Limited Edition Box.......so now pretty soon I'm going to have two copies of the PS3 version..... :-\

Haha yeah... I was considering that too actually. I ultimately decided to just wait and pick up a single G4U game at some stage when I see one I really like.

If you wanted to, you could always sell your old copy on eBay. Might get almost all of the money you spent back.

I was never into G4U but Vol. 3 of that series is lovely (Winter casual clothes! <3). Maybe I'M going to buy that one....
The Limited Edition Box is too expensive for me D:

Lost count of the times I fapped to it. Also, waiting for Lady Taka's version before I get another volume.

The first one is fine, but I do wonder why it was more of a "teaser" than those coming next.  The 1st only has the Beauty Mizugi, while the others promoted so far will contain a couple.  I take it more as a preview of when previous 360 DLC outfits will make their way to the PS3.  I can't imagine the complaints people will have if the Vivid Bikini is available in G4U, but not the actual game proper.  That may not be what happens, but it would be nice if it does.

Either way, the first volume is amusing.  I find it a bit strange that executing an action/request centers the camera, but otherwise it's a small gripe.  I see why it's that way, as it's ideal to have the camera centered towards taking a picture.  It helps when they do something action-oriented, so you can center the camera and take the picture in quick succession.  The extras on the disc are nice as well, like the axed Ami loading screen from the 360.  You can play it... over... and over... and over... and it will never end... until you let it.  I hope the Azusa PS3 loading screen gets included in the future, I could dig it.

The third volume is what I'm anticipating as well.  The USB functionality is nice, though I was a bit skeptical of the JPG-only format.  In the end the compression is fine, filesize is not too small or too big.

I'm up for what's next, all nine volumes (so far) of this money... spending... thing!

I have volumes 2, 3, and 4 preordered. I will get them all, because I am a slave to Im@s. D:

I don't mind that they come packed with the anime/drama cds/soundtracks/etc. I watched the anime bluray that came with the LE, and I liked that it had the VA commentary. I hope all the other volumes have them too.

Either way, I'm pretty excited to get my hands on all of them. I'll be busy making PS3/PSP themes with the pics that I take. :)

Funny thing is, i got the LE edition, but never opened the G4U case yet. when it comes to games, if it has an LE or collector  (Take your pick) it the one i always get no matter what, or else it feels like i never got it. Im getting vol 3 or 4 at some point

You guys are making me want to buy them all. >.< I wish I could afford it. :(

#4 Is really tempting. I'm kinda waiting to see what Iori or Hibiki will be on the cover of.

I really liked taking pictures during the encores while I was playing through it, and the fact that you can export your pictures to a USB drive is really cool.

That, and the fact that the game and the anime (episode 20  :'( 'nuff said) are GODLIKE.

...and the fact that I'm a sucker for collections, limited editions, extra content, etc.  :-[

I would really like to get the G4U packs but I don't have the money considering how frickin expensive they are. But if I were to choose one I would say Volume 3 mainly because Yukiho is on the cover and the winter casuals are pretty cute. Especailly Yukiho's! XD

I've been deciding whether to buy VOL 2 when it's available or just save that money for next months vol 3.  Plus the winter clothes in the next volume would be worth it.

Does volume 3 come out in December? If so, it'd be nice to get in time for winter as well as a nice Christmas present for myself haha.

Title: Re: G4U! Discussion
Post by: MissDeidara on November 22, 2011, 12:20:18 am
I've been thinking about buying the Winter Casual one, but I'm still waiting for more volumes to come, so I can really choose the one I want the most (There's also the fact that I am keeping some of my money for DLC, as I recently received my Im@s copy).

Though I heard on another topic (Still not confirmed yet) the next volume will be pajamas, with Yayoi on the cover. If that really is the case then I don't care what the next volumes are going to be, I'm buying it! Now I'm wondering what will the one with Miki on the cover be. Summer Casual?
Title: Re: G4U! Discussion

December 29th huh? Well that gives me time to get some Christmas money bahaha!

I was thinking of waiting for one to come that I'd really want as well but unfortunately for me, Haruka is on the cover for the first one so I had no choice but to get the limited edition because I MUST have it. Summer casual should be interesting.. does anyone know what volume 4's theme is? That's the one with Takane right?
Title: Re: G4U! Discussion

I heard that there's going to be NINE volumes, is that right?

If so, can you imagine how much money that is...  :-X

Ridiculous.

...does anyone know what volume 4's theme is? That's the one with Takane right?

On PlayAsia they have a few screenshots:

Based on those four, it looks like a Hawaiian vacation or something...  ;D

...and there really is going to be nine of them huh... that's over $1000 altogether!  :-X

but hey, IT'S GOING TO BE WORTH IT (for me anyways)  8)

Well, there's been 9 announced. Who knows what else might happen. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if every idol got there own cover which, of course, means there will be more than 9.

Ah, Bandai, you make me laugh.

Earlier in their official blog, they said that all volumes of G4U were going to be limited edition.  They were only going to make a limited number of each volume and once it was gone, it was going to be gone.  (They were trying to convince people that they need to pre-order if they want one and also go out and search for the collector's box if they want Volume 1.)

Fast forward a bit and in the newest blog post, they say G4U Volume 2 is going to have a second print run.  So!  If you didn't pre-order Volume 2 and your favorite importer/store is out, just wait until early December when additional copies will hit the market.

Namco Bandai have proven time and time again that you can't trust a word they say.

As long as it's in our favor, and making it more likely that I can complete the collection is definitely something I'll take. ;D

Wowww, a thousand dollars.. It's SO tempting to complete the collection and of course when you don't think about it altogether it's like a 120 bucks a month.. But still, it's quite a bit of money. I'm kinda glad that they're doing a re-run but not at the same time because now I'm going to want to buy volume 2 just so 1 isn't left by itself. :P
Title: Re: G4U! Discussion

Every time I think of G4U I have to try and tell myself to be strong and just hang out for the one (maybe two) that really appeal to me. That being said, I really want them all. :P
Title: Re: G4U! Discussion
Post by: Reosaur on November 22, 2011, 12:34:18 pm
I'm trying to hold out as well.. I guess it's good they're doing a re-run actually so that we can see all of the versions that come out the first time around then when the second run is released we can just pick the one we want.

I'm going to have two copies of the PS3 version..... :-\
I agree with DereDereAngel that you can sell the second copy.  It's going to be shrinkwrapped and factory sealed (even after you unwrap the plastic for the limited edition box itself), so that will help you.

I find it a bit strange that executing an action/request centers the camera, but otherwise it's a small gripe.  I see why it's that way, as it's ideal to have the camera centered towards taking a picture.
I have the same gripe.  It should have been a choice in the options menu to disable it, since I might want a specific angle to anticipate a new pose but I'm forced to reset to front-and-center.

Funny thing is, i got the LE edition, but never opened the G4U case yet. when it comes to games, if it has an LE or collector  (Take your pick) it the one i always get no matter what, or else it feels like i never got it. Im getting vol 3 or 4 at some point
You'll open the G4U case eventually, right?  ^^;  Though I guess if you're that type of collector, you'd never want to sell it even if you may never open it to play.

I splurged on the Special Box so I have volume 1 of G4U!.  It's super cute, but I don't know if I'm that addicted to get the rest of the 8 volumes (~$1000 price tag is definitely hefty).  Too bad it's not in Namco's favor to release a final compilation of all 9 games at the very end in one disc.  Also, if they're going to go all out and take our money, I'd like to see a box to hold all 9 volumes of G4U! since they expect us to get all 9 volumes of the anime Blu-ray to fill this first box.  :P

Based on the Play-Asia screenshots, it looks like the beach background from Volume 1 is re-used, but the girls just get to wear Hawaiian-themed stuff.

Me? I just budget for these outflows about six months in advance. Speaking of which, I need to cover the order for volume two tomorrow.

The fun part is though you can get for 10x the value of these collector items an apartment somewhere in Japan. (Foreclosed on, of course. New you'd probably need 20x that.)

Now how's that for scary?

It's still a bit disappointing you can't request an idol to sit on the floor in the school uniform, though I do understand why this is probably the case.  I'd love to have a couple of images like this (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/yayoi_31.jpg) or this (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/iori_19.jpg) in it.  Floor/outfit collision problems maybe?  Either way, I still quite like it.  Until Play-Asia "ships" the digital PSN cards I bought two days ago, this provides plenty of entertainment for now!

They ran out of stock on the 3000 yen card some time after I ordered (the only indication is the "5-15d" status).  The other one's in stock, but I suppose they only "ship" orders when everything's together.  This happened with the last card I ordered, where it changed to "5-15d" the following day (after indicating "24hr" when ordering).  I waited six days for their stock to arrive, but so it goes I suppose.  I'll wait, but if they run out of the other card and still delay my order when they restock the 3000 yen variety... I will probably use another retailer.  Everything went fine for the first card I purchased, had it within two hours.

I guess I've been unlucky recently?  Oh well, in time I imagine.

Not completely sure if this is accurate but:

If you look closely at the tentative packages, each of them has an idol's colour on it.

So the order from volume 6 should be: Makoto, Hibiki, Miki and Chihaya.

Maybe.

Now that's a very nice observation.
I'd be inclined to say I'll wait till volume 8 to buy one, as Miki's my favorite Idol, but at the same time the Idol starred on the cover doesn't make the whole theme...I mean, I may love Miki, but maybe the theme won't interest me. So, as soon as I'm done buying gifts for Christmas, I'll buy the Yayoi volume. (I love pajamas =w=)

Oh and also, welcome c:

I picked up the G4U Vol.2 from the UPS warehouse last night.

When I opened up the shipment package, I found out there were few damages to the box cover and the Blu-ray disc box.  :-\

Usually I placed my order through Amazon.JP, but I placed the order too late so I ordered from play-asia.

Just wondering if anyone has the same problem?

Ohhhhh, that IS a nice observation. I'm only planning on buying ONE more and I'm thinking it's gonna be Takane.. Not sure yet though because the other volumes might have more interesting themes... Though the Hawaiian outfits look pretty yummy already.

no

G4U doesn't give you anything for the actual game

but some (all?) of the costumes used in G4U are already in the game or available as DLC

I love the new cover for the Makoto volume. But having the girls in bikini's is beginning to get a little old and repetitive. There are so many cute costumes from the game they could be using.  Isn't having them in 5 volumes enough?  But still I am TOTALLY loving the Kyun vampire girl costume.  Do you guys think they're gonna have the Snowflake Liliput as a main costume as well?

Punkish Gothic is the highest rated DLC for L4U on the Japanese 360 store. If it's part of a G4U release, I'm in.

Mini Wedding being the second highest, then Live for Venus.

No offense but a recolor...?

That's the best they could do..?

G4U...as fan servicey as it is...just kinda seems like a waste of money for me..I need to find a good volume I guess.

Yeah, the recoloring isn't even all that good. It's like Namco is giving its customers the finger just because they know people will buy it anyway.

I hope so~

And I completely agree with you, the swimsuitsas much as I love having an excuse to see Azusa and Takane in bikinis...are getting annoying...

My opinion exactly.
They have a lot more idols left...and they're already going to recolors.

Planning to buy the volume 6 as soon as it is available, using Makoto for the volume 6 cover is just like they force me to auto buy this volume.

Anyway, does the G4U came with the anime blu-ray or it's just the game itself?

i'm still wondering what they plan to do when Ryo is supposed to wear swimwear... take the Sailor Bikini as example, which can be used on Ai in S4U. Well i guess there won't be an option for Ryo to do that.

At first I was like "...summer school girl?" but it's coming out in late April. Derp.

...Is this the first g4u without a swimsuit? It looked like they were starting to run out of them, especially with all the recolors.

Question, how do the "*idol color* mixes" work? Are they like a few songs from various games sung by the idol? How many, and what songs for each idol? I've been curious about it but never got to asking.

It had only one outfit, the Beauty Mizugi.

They're all a DJ MIX of a few songs, and they all fit pretty well mixed together:

VOL.1: HARUKA RedMIX (I Want / Do-Dai / GO MY WAY!! / Overmaster / Tonari ni... / Kiramekirari)
VOL.2: MAMI YellowMIX (Agent Yoru o Yuku / Ai LIKE Hamburger / Honey Heartbeat / Positive! / Mahou o Kakete! / Start→Star→)
VOL.3: YUKIHO WhiteMIX (First Stage / Kimi wa Melody / Kosmos, Cosmos / Omoide o Arigatou / The world is all one !! / L・O・B・M)
VOL.4: TAKANE OrientalRedMIX (shiny smile / SMOKY THRILL / Kamisama no Birthday / Here we go!! / Watashi wa Idol / MEGARE!)

They're all produced by Akitaka Tohyama.

I've always liked the Tenshi no Mizugi designs, and I often wondered if they'd give it a black version.  I'm pleased with the Koakuma no Mizugi from VOL.6's promos, I absolutely dig it.

Keep it up NBGI, next volume's PJs can't come soon enough.

Oh... and an Ai towards the future, good to see 876 aren't just a passing memory.

G4U will be getting a few additional options starting with the 5th volume.  Dengeki online has an article about the new functionality here. (http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/459/459614/)
These all seem awesome, especially the controller->camera deal.  So often I try to nudge the camera just ever so slightly to where I want it... then overshoot by pressing too hard.  This'll add a new fun aspect to these mini-games.  I can absolutely dig it.

This month's DJ MIX, again by Akitaka Tohyama:

VOL.5: YAYOI OrangeMIX (Massugu / Futari no Kioku / my song / Ohayou!! Asagohan / Meisou Mind / THE IDOLM@STER)

I've always liked Yayoi's rendition of Meisou Mind... awesome.  While I do dig the new functionality, it would be nice if they could apply to the photos themselves (aside from the vignetting effect).  Unless I'm missing something, which I could be.  Extending the kerare filter to be selected itself, as opposed to applying just with the size option would be neat.  I'm a little confused as to why the logo moves with the size, seems a bit unnecessary.  I still enjoy this volume, really nice presentation overall.

The comments on the Nekomimi Mode photos are fun, so I can dig it.

*A wild Yayoi is spotted in her natural habitat* (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-needs-a-magazine_074.jpg)

"What was that Yayoi?" (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iori-que-084.jpg)

"Um... I didn't say anything, Iori-chan" (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-zones-out_080.jpg)

"You mean... Iori-nyan! (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iorinyan_066.jpg)

Yar, somehow I hit the wrong "Reply" button to a different thread.

Dengeki Online article (http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/465/465007/), includes the same tasty 720p/60fps trailer treatment that the DLC gets.  I like how the 876ers get their own office in the selection screen, nice touch.  The Pastels are cute... but the Wedding Dress is to die for.  That matching background is quite lovely as well.

Bring it on!

How I want to see Takane in a wedding dress... Azusa looks stunning. Ritsuko is very adorable too. I like all of the older idols wearing them ♥ And Eri...I forget if Ai was included in a volume of G4U! or not, but are the bonus idols compatible with the regular outfits and not just the swimsuits?

As for the Vivid Bikini recolor...it seems pretty lazy to me. And I love Makoto, but her recolor looks the worst in my opinion. It would have been nicer if they had gotten new swimsuits at least.
Title: Re: G4U! Discussion
Post by: Funkies on March 08, 2012, 06:32:31 am
Ai appears in the 7th volume, where it's only been mentioned thus far that she wears the Exercise Wear NEO outfit.  It seems to be setup somewhat like the 5th volume, where the Nekomimi Mode was under the "Special Contents" menu.  As for the 8th volume the menu seems setup much the same.  The other two options below Special Idol is for the sandy beach horizon background (seems separate for 765 and Eri), so it's also selected through the Special Contents menu.

It may change by the time we get it, but so far it seems Ai and Eri get only the swimsuit equivalents for each volume.

This is the best G4U! volume ever. All other volumes go home. I love the yukatas, especially Takane's--I wouldn't mind seeing them appear as in-game DLC as well. And I really love the sailor swimsuits, they're my favorites...and then there's Ryo. Damn. Talk about serious...well, to wear that. I'm a girl and even I know that has to be ridiculously painful.

I find it interesting though that they decided to put Ryo in G4U!, yet he wasn't available as in-game DLC this month. Perhaps next month then...  :( But if we have to wait that long, I want to see something that allows Ryo to be able to experience being a true guy idol for once by performing with Jupiter. Ryo and Touma duet...

4 and 5 are also discounted:

VOL.6: MAKOTO BlackMIX (Matane / Honey Heartbeat / L・O・B・M / Do-Dai / Overmaster / Kiramekirari)

DJ MIX by Akitaka Tohyama... again.

There's a "normal" fangless mode available in the Special Contents menu.  I didn't personally expect it, but it's a groovy little feature.

Also yay for yukatas in the final volume... as I didn't post previously about the awesomeness of fireworks in the background.

Does anyone know any archives of G4U pics? Especially ones where they don't use tons of vertigo-inspiring dutch angle shots? (It's tedious having to load those up in photoshop and rotate them right side up all the time.)

The only I've found is:
http://g4up.precog.net/

and it's not terribly comprehensive (and also filled with dutch angles @_@), there doesn't appear to be any Rough Time School shots  :'(

Also, sorry if this was asked already, but it's a yes/no, is it likely that all the G4Us will be released as a single game some time in the future?

I've been wondering the same thing as to where to find good G4U! photos...

As for a G4U! complete package release, it would be really nice and I would buy it. Would also save one some money. But I feel as if G4U! is a main incentive for iM@S anime DVD/Bluray sales so they might keep it exclusive as a bonus to buying the DVD/Blurays.

Eventually they will want to cash in! Like those DVD/Bluray movies that release normally, then do an "Extended Cut" or "Director's Cut" or "Widescreen" release or shows that release episodes periodically on DVD/Bluray but still have a compilation "set" at the end... but you're right it probably won't happen for at least a year...

The arcade cabinet is a 1/12 scale model kit.

No more than 3,000 yen.

Confusion solved.

There is some truth in the whole set of G4U being expensive though.

Oh, was there confusion about the kit? Sorry, I never caught it. Yeah, it's only a small scale model kit. HOWEVER, if I could somehow get my hands on the real cabinet along with the PCB? Yeah, I'd sink thousands into it, easily. Not even a second thought. :P

As far as the laws? I don't think they're that strict. There shouldn't be any problem as long as it isn't pornography, AFAIK.

Yeah besides, they're going to look at G4U and not give it a second thought. It's not like the cover is super pornographic.

Canadian law is pretty much no lolicon.
If it aint porn it should be fine. The worst case is they double check a swimsuit cover but even then it isn't porn it'll be fine.

Oh, a scale model, ok :)

I've read that it can depend on who's opening your boxes, 99.9% of postal workers will let it go by... but there's always a chance that a fanatic biblepreacher, an uber-feminist, or simply someone who's watched too much CSI will find it and start something. And probably 99% of those reports get waved away by doubtful supervisors. But...

I remember ordering some pretty tame artwork books (it did have some nudity though) from I think it was Tokyo Tosho or Tokyo MetroCity or something? Or some other company that's out of business now, and then later reading about Christopher Handley and thinking "Holy crap, praise the powers that be that my mail stuff didn't get struck by lightning like his did."

I'm paranoid about the evil gov't so I haven't ordered anything since. Even canceled my subscription to Megami! from JList after the Handley thing...

Canadian law is pretty much no lolicon.

Yeah... the thing is though, that "porn" is usually defined as anything meant to arouse one's erotic faculties, and so even with a swimsuit cover... who knows? Better safe than sorry.

I think the doujinshi thing is risky.  I'm not sure how customs officials and postal officials open packages and reseal them- my imported CDs happen to come in sticky bubblewraped packages that are hell to open.  I do hear silly stories on the internet about customs officials or TSA agents being jerks and insisting that all manga is porn, or action figures are a security threat.  These stories are unverified, but really... it only takes one jerk to cause trouble.

I did ask Hen Da Ne (the doujin importers) at a local con how they managed to do business with the state laws shifting as they do... they said 1) no little kids, and 2) something else I forgot.  They are also careful about making sure that all purchasers are of legal age.

About the Handley case... I don't know the details, but I speculate he may have been caught with other things and the manga/doujin just happened to be what got the internet's attention?

When it comes to things related to official iDOLM@STER merchandise, nobody should really worry about importing anything.  There is really so little objectionable from a glance with any of the material.  At most it's stuff like this (http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=BOK-5205) or even this (http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=BOK-5792) that comes through, and I'd hardly consider that pornographic.  All of the G4U packages have fairly tasteful representations on them so far.  G4U is fairly tame all things considered, as it's what the user decides to do with the game that could call any inappropriateness to the table.  That's for the user to decide, as I could care less what someone does with their own copy.

Doujinshi I suppose might need careful consideration, though I've had little issue with importing any thus far.  I use a deputy service to order from Toranoana on occasion.  They tend to include the catalogs that come with the orders.  One's a general audience catalog, another is a BL catalog (despite... not ordering anything of the sort myself), and the last is an adult oriented catalog.  No packaging, they just plop it on top of whatever's in the box.  It only displays covers for the variety of manga and doujin material they sell, but those can be explicit enough on their own.  I've not had any issues so far, and I don't particularly anticipate them either.

The postmaster in this town is a good friend, and she's been in the business for thirty-odd years.  I asked her about it once upon a time and she assured me that unless the content is mostly driven at a specific controversial (or illegal) concept?  Then you should be A-OK.  These folks that search mail have superiors to report to.  Their superiors have others above them to report to.  The entire chain has to agree to escalate the issue at each juncture before any action can proceed at the top.  I worked for the federal government for seven years myself at the IRS, it was a nightmare gettin' anything done.  Now I'm associated at the state level as a foster care provider... still it's a nightmare gettin' anything done.

Try not to worry so much about it when it comes to iM@S.  It's all good, so you should enjoy it.

I won't comment on that Handley case or the fella himself, it's not for me to say since I don't know him personally.

I guess Amazon JP was overstock on Vol 3. CDJapan no longer has Vol 2, that one is starting to go out of print on some sites.

It's not always good wait for a cheaper price, they can go out of print when you least expect it. I thought the G4U sets would go out of print within weeks of release, but they didn't and I still managed to get the one I wanted. I guess Namco really did print plenty to meet demand.

Use a website that will ship outside of Japan like Mandarake or Amiami.

Go for it before the price goes up. The most you will end up spending is around less than 80 bucks with the fees and shipping and that's about 40-50 bucks back in your pocket. I spent around $75 for Vol. 3 total and I still saved myself around $50.
If Vol. 4 is 3874 right now plus the fee which is around 500-700 yen and the shipping which is another 1500 yen, it should come out exactly 5874 or 6074 which is $73-75 compared to 9505 yen plus shipping (around 700 yen and up) which is around $130 more or less.

Actually I've had it up in a tab for some time and was considering them. No handling fees/commission and a discount on EMS sounds pretty good. I saw good feedback in the thread, too.

What's the EMS cost on these to NA anyway? I have a lot of trouble finding a weight. cdjapan says it's 230g (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BLJS-10141) which according to the EMS rates (http://www.post.japanpost.jp/english/fee/intel/ems.html) should be 1200 yen to North America, assuming it's accurate. That's the only place I've been able to find a weight, though.

Amazon's got free shipping within the country, so if that's an accurate EMS charge, it should be 3874 (+tax? *Shrug* Never done this before.) for the game and another 1140 for shipping from JShoppers. That's a pretty good price.

DJ MIX still by Akitaka Tohyama.

Haven't tossed it into the PS3 yet, but I can still dig the variety of songs used for these mixes.  Keeps the entire thing from pigeonholing itself into one genre.

Just to compare, my limited boxes of Weiss Schwarz Portable and 7th Dragon 2020 collectively weighed 1.2 Kg. That was around 2600 yen in shipping costs to get them both here. Don't know how big a G4U box is and what it contains, but when you get down to it, there's really nothing you can do about weight and shipping costs provided everyone you find uses EMS.

... Now, if my friends wanted to play online more, I'd be able to run dated decks against them.

So... sorry but... what is this? I've seen the box art plenty of times but I still don't understand what it actually is... just a photo collection of the idols?

It's not a... game... specifically.  I suppose one could call it more of a supportive... um... release?  Sure, sounds fine.  It's time to take pictures for promotional uses, or so that's the premise anyhow.  Each volume represents one of the nine usually selectable idols in the regular mode of gameplay from iDOLM@STER 2.  Choose an idol (utilizing the same interface as, again, iDOLM@STER 2) and off you go.  Each volume has an optional story segment by the idol on the cover.  No choices to be made, just dialogue between the idol and Producer.

The player takes control of the camera.  The player can zoom in or out, adjust lens focus from foreground to background, tilt the camera from a portrait up to a landscape orientation, and (from volume #5 and onwards) add a vignetting effect to the images.  The player makes "requests" to the idol subject, and they'll respond in some fashion.  These requests vary from they style of pose you want them to make, to switching their expression, as well as asking them to get up or down from the floor.  The player can also leave the poses up to the idol as well.

Each idol has a specific pose that only they do, and not all of the idols will use every pose from the repertoire available.  They also have moods that change while taking pictures.  Iori, for example, may start out self-centered and enthusiastic, or she may be unsure and embarrassed.  This can go one way or another while taking pictures, as well as opening up another set of expressions that can be requested.  Requesting for them to get down is not available for every outfit, mostly only for form fitting outfits (such as the swimsuit variants, pajamas, and t-shirt/bloomers combo).  The winter casual (Volume 3), wedding dress (Volume 8), and yukata (Volume 9) outfits have a different pose set from the usual.

Holy yar this is turning into an essay for a not-quite-a-game game.  The pictures are saved to the PS3's memory and can be transferred off via USB connection in 1280x720 resolution (regardless of the PS3's display resolution).  From volume 5 onward the idols will leave "comments" on the images on the PS3, though I do not believe these comments transfer off of the console.  From volume 5 onwards the controller itself can be used to tilt the camera from side to side via a menu option.  Each volume comes with a DJ mix of songs centered towards the cover idol.  The player can choose what BGM tracks are available to use during the photo session in the main menu (the mixes themselves count as one track).

Yikes... last bit, I promise.  Each volume has extras in the "Special Contents" section.  This is where to access Volume 5's cat ears mode, Volume 6's normal fangless mode, and Volume 7's Ai.  Volume 8 will have Eri and Volume 9 will have Ryo available in this fashion.

For something so simple... it really isn't easy to explain in a few words I suppose.  There are "game" elements to it, but I wouldn't exactly call it a "game" proper whatsoever.  There are trophies though, so if that's your thing... it's good that way.

Yeah, it's basically like a fanservice game for fans only and you wouldn't want your parents to catch you while taking pictures of 13 year old (mostly under age) girls wearing bikinis during a sensual pose. I'm surprise that all the volumes have gotten a C rating while some should be getting a D rating from CERO.

I agree that you wouldn't want your parents (and probably most other people) to catch you playing it. But I don't think it's enough to warrant a D rating. Yes, you take pictures of mostly underaged girls in bikinis, and there are some dodgy poses and dialogue ("Am I sexy?", "Doesn't this pose look perverted~?", stuff to that effect).

However, it's supposed to be more cute than sexy. It's not even ecchi IMO; I mean, their boobs/butts aren't hanging out or anything and it's not especially lewd. It's "fanservice" but pretty tame compared to other fanservice titles.

Does it really deserve the same rating as say, Dream Club Zero, where you feed scantily-clad drunk women in an erotic manner and make them ride mechanical bulls?

With all that said, I do agree that G4U is a fans-only kind of thing. /end pointless rant

Let's not pitchfork the G4U, as it is absolutely harmless.  What one wishes to do with the software is up to the individual.  I imagine this was taken into consideration with the CERO fellas.  I can't say what rating it deserves, as I'm not part of the group responsible (or even the culture whatsoever).  The standards between Japan and a decent portion of the West are a bit different, though that's a blah argument not necessary to get into.  I do believe that is why they have "FOR JAPAN ONLY" labeled on the back of each case, as that is the intended region's audience.

I'm absolutely sure NBGI is aware of the fanbase for the franchise in the West, but they're not marketing or trying to please us.  What goes in Japan, does not mean it goes for the West.  What goes in the West, does not mean it goes for Japan either.  Kind of a give and take, even if I don't always agree with the loss in transition from one to another.

It's up to the individual if they wish to import these limited edition packages.  Anyone purchasing it would be best equipped knowing what exactly that entails, though worries of "illegal" content should be put to rest.  It is what the user decides to do with the software.  If one wishes to take pictures devoid of any particular sexuality?  They have that virtual power.  Likewise if they wish to take pictures that could be considered as sexual?  They also have that virtual power.  There's middle area for sure, and it's up to the user where they want to land with it.

Yeah, it's not an echi game in that sense, but some people outside the fanbase may view it that way like your peers. At least its well tamed and I play it because I wan to see cute girls doing cute things.

. . . Not relating to the conversation thus far, but. . . Is anyone else slightly bothered with the costume they chose for Ryo to be able to wear in the newest G4U? Y'know, a skin-tight swim bottom? At least it's not another recolor, but seriously. Ryo in a bikini? Isn't there something wrong with this picture.

All I can say is that he must have his little buddy down there bound up pretty tight to be able to pull off wearing bikinis without blowing his cover.

Then again, Namco's pretty much just running the show with fanservice, at least as far as swimsuits are concerned, and not necessarily on logic. The whole ryo thing just sort of hit me just now.

Eh, Ryo has a fine singing voice, so that's all that really matters to me.  ;D

After a couple of other traps in other games I play, Ryo is just another one to add to the roster. :P

Ryo is fine, I don't mind if he's a trap.  When I first discovered he was... a he... I was a little unsure what to think of the concept.  As time went on I realized his existence alone is part of the humor iM@S incorporates here and there.  I'm up for that, nothin' wrong with a little crossdressing here and there.

Or all the time, whatever tickles your... um... whatever.

We're expected to take pictures and buy the fact he's a guy in a bikini.  It is optional, as I doubt a trophy will be affiliated since Ai didn't have one.  We're just expected to take pictures of him and like it.

And we will... I guess?

Sure, why not?

Eh, Ryo has a fine singing voice, so that's all that really matters to me.  ;D

Indeed.

The only ones I remember is Takane sticking out her hand forward dramatically. And I think Haruka's involves falling down. But that's all I remember.

Maybe if you look through that G4U gallery (http://g4up.precog.net/) you can figure it out. Or look at videos.

Poses between the idols are sometimes a bit different.  Those poses are nevertheless shared by at least one other idol.  I know that sounds confusing, but it's not hard to imagine when lookin' at the G4Up image site.  Yayoi won't do this (http://g4up.precog.net/entries/2579/full/g4u2579.jpg) or this (http://g4up.precog.net/entries/2474/full/g4u2474.jpg).  Certain others won't jump (http://g4up.precog.net/entries/2451/full/g4u2451.jpg) either.  All of the on-the-floor poses are the same I'm pretty sure.  Which is A-OK since it's not available for all outfits.

The game appears to run at the same 60fps the games do and there is no way to freeze the idols while they pose.  They still move (and blink) while in a pose, I suppose to mimic the concept that it's difficult to stay absolutely still (and well... not blink).  If they are standing on one leg, they seem to have trouble balancing to keep the pose.  All sorts of other quirks as well.  It's fairly difficult to capture a pose at all the points.  I suppose that's part of the charm and interest with it, so it's all good.

At times the mini-game requires a certain amount of rhythm to take identical pictures with different expressions.  It is an iM@S game after all, though it's strange such a thing pops up in something like this.

As for videos, I have little idea what's out there.  Nico seems to turn up some pretty good results as a start. (http://www.nicovideo.jp/search/%E3%82%A2%E3%82%A4%E3%83%89%E3%83%AB%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%20g4u)  Some I'm sure are just merely slideshows, but there has to be something captured with a device in there.  Ever since Nico's 5th anniversary the transfer speed on videos can be abysmally slow (or just disconnects all together), so I really can't check for myself at the moment.

Good luck on the search, hopefully you turn up somethin' groovy!

Amazon.co.jp has more copies of Vol. 4 in stock at 61% off, in case anyone else wanted to do what I did.

So I sat down with said volume today and spent some time playing it. Every now and then I'd hear some kind of chime when an idol posed. Maybe the answer's in the topic somewhere already and I just don't remember, but what exactly does that mean/do?

The tone means their mood has changed.  If you hit the 15 minute mark the tone will also sound and they'll respond in some fashion.  Perhaps every increment afterwards, but I've not spent that long at once before.  Their requested expressions will change a bit depending on their mood so it's always worth a look at what is available when the tone sounds.

Going to amend this list here, as a few things have changed since I originally posted it.

Haruka (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Haruka-pose.jpg) (and... afterwards (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Haruka-oops.jpg))/ Mami (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Mami-pose.jpg) / Ami (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Ami-pose.jpg) / Yukiho (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yukiho-pose.jpg) / Takane (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Takane-pose.jpg) / Ritsuko (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Ritsuko-pose.jpg) / Yayoi (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-pose.jpg) Yayoi's high touch (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-high-touch.jpg) / Chihaya (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Chihaya-pose.jpg) / Iori (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iori-pose.jpg) / Makoto (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Makoto-pose.jpg) (punch! (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Makoto-punch.jpg)) / Azusa's turn (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Azusa-turn.jpg) & pose (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Azusa-pose.jpg) / Hibiki (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Hibiki-pose.jpg) / Miki's onigiri (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Miki-pose.jpg) / Ai (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Ai-pose.jpg)

I forgot that Makoto's punch turns into a kick (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Makoto-kick.jpg), and she sets down differently (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Makoto-pose2.jpg) if wearing an outfit with the ability to use on the floor.  Yayoi's pose up there is shared by at least Ami, so... blah.  It seems that Yayoi only has her high touch.  Even so (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-up-high.jpg) it has (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-get-ready.jpg)... quite a setup (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Air-Yayoi.jpg) and landing (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi-landed.jpg).

Nitpicky?  Absolutely.  It bothers me to leave things like that stay... not quite right.

Interesting, I always thought that I got a great angle cause I always hear that chime sound whenever I get a good camera angle.

In Vol. 3 it sucks that the older idols like Azusa, Ritsuko, and Takanae are boring.

Why would it not be legal? At weddings sometimes the flower-girl wears a regular dress, but sometimes they dress her up in a smaller wedding dress. Anyway, I'm still not used to that word being used so casually outside of disreputable dives like 4ch or SA... For what it's worth, how it's been used it's as loaded and trollish a word as the N word or ... actually it's at least an order of magnitude worse... ahhhh forget it, I have Iori in my avatar it's not like I'm in any position to say this that or the other.

What do you mean what are they for? Technically the G4U volumes are their own games. They're all separate discs that are played like a game on the PS3. They're kind of considered a game because of that I guess, so they need to have trophies.

I don't know what the trophies are, but they're probably stuff like doing a photo session for a certain amount of time.

You can just choose a character, hit R1 to take the pic, then exit the session. Trophy shows up on the loading screen.

There's one for viewing the character "story" segment, and that segment leads into a photoshoot with the idol. Taking at least one picture of every idol gives you every other trophy (since there's one for getting everyone).

Artbook, with concept sketches of the characters/locations/outfits. Every volume comes packed with one, roughly 70 pages.
The one that came with this volume is "Model Sheet Collection, Volume 4". Mainly characters/outfits.

Probably.  I wonder where she could be?

I don't know if it's just this volume, but they've added some relevant comments from the idols.  If this happened on one of the previous two volumes I've not witnessed it myself.  Time... has been in short supply lately.  After hearing what Yayoi had to say (while doing this (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yayoi_33.jpg))... cute is in generous supply.  It evens out I guess.

Eri has her own pose (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Eri_0.jpg), though it's a bit different than I expected.  The way (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Eri_26.jpg) she looks away (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Eri_27.jpg) is still adorable. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Eri_28.jpg)  I wish they would have at least put them in their stage outfits for the intro video.  Eri standing in the Pastel Bikini for such a thing is a bit odd to me.  Overall it's still a nice idea, so kudos to them on that.

Weird Iori faces, (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iori_78.jpg) because they (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iori_101.jpg) are great. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Iori_156.jpg)

That picture is from episode 24 of the anime. If you want to know why chibi Haruka appears, watch the anime, or read my spoiler below.

Haruka is depressed because of her job, but then she hallucinates and sees chibi Haruka, who reminds her of why she wanted to be an idol in the first place. This cheers her up.
It's a little more complicated than that, but that's about it.

It's a bit different, but definitely similar in stature.

Yukiho (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Yukiho-pose.jpg) / Eri (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FunktasticMatt/Eri_0.jpg)

Super awesome choices I dare say.  I'd be neat if G4U sticks around in some form, even as a facet of the next game would be fine by me.  As long as it has weird Iori faces?  I'll throw money at it.

Agree completely.
I think it should be a game element.

Like you do promotional photoshoots for your idol and there would be like a grading system and stuff. (Like if your idol is making a good face, good pose, etc etc)

So idols could focus on one element they are good at, for example more visual idols like Miki could be purely gravure models and not really sing and stuff but then more vocal idols like Chihaya would have less photoshoot time and more singing time.

Absolutely dig this idea!  G4U's already segmented into this idea somewhat with selecting poses and expressions.  iDOLM@STER has always had some kind of distinction with appearances.  I'd like concept of segmenting what type of Promotional work to do at any particular point.  Or even make it something all together different?  I wouldn't want it to be something else you'd have to reset repeatedly to get, there's enough of that already.

I understand why they end up doing the same Promotional work in each game, but a variation based on a unit's stats or appearance (plus more mini-game opportunities) would be awesome.  If they were to combine the engines between the two, maybe we could finally extract the pictures taken during performances without a capture device?  That would be awesome.

Or just make it like Pokemon Snap, whatever.  I can see the elusive Yukiho being the one to get.  I'd still play it.

More likely, the player would probably be required to do the songs/concerts/auditions/whatever and the photoshoots, or would have the option to switch between, in the next game. There might even be an audition stage for certain photoshoot stages, like you have to take and choose a picture to send in to get a certain photoshoot job.

(As an aside, anyone want to see acting portions or some such? Would be a nightmare to implement, but with Yukiho and Haruka getting acting jobs in the anime, it wouldn't be out of place. Idols get put in movies and TV dramas all the time, right?)

Well, iM@S is about idols, and idols do everything. So technically doing singing, dancing, acting, modelling, promoting, etc. would actually make them more idol-like, and make the game more interesting and varied. The game is already pretty complicated, so this would add another layer of complexity. And another way for Namco to make money from ridiculous amounts of DLC.

Well with the forum acting wonky, I can unfortunately share only half of what I was going to yesterday:

AmiAmi has G4U Vol. 8 on sale at 32% off.

They had Vol. 7 at 27% or something yesterday, but it looks like that one's over, probably because it sold out. But then again, Vol. 8 is sold out, too. Keep an eye out for a restock until they remove the sale price if you're interested.

It's like I ran out of steam making the 4 from vol.1 already, lol. I'll get to making them, I swear. D:

(I like the later volumes anyways, so it was probably a good thing until I waited until I had them all.)

So are there any more Online shops(besides the aforementioned ones you guys mentioned already) that retail G4u specifically Vol. 2 :P that's brand new or is that too much to ask >_<

I'll start from yayoi, I've sorted out a few pics

tried shots from a few angles, I find the controls a bit annoying, it's a bit hard to capture a proper moment

this shot was a failure, didn't turned out good

but this turned out awesome >:3

and now's chihaya's turn(after getting a bit familiar with her posses and facial expressions), I had to sort out her pics too, a session could take 1-2hours and produce at least 100 shots

a pic trying to portray chihaya being not confident with her outfit

love her sharp eyes, but the petals often gets in your way ^^;; they're pretty random

you can feel the space of the set,  and this time, the petals weren't a bother.
chihaya smiling under the petals, lovely...

the rest of the pics are still chihaya, but I tried a little editing on the pics. I think it turned out great

got the idea to shoot it like this and had to move the idolm@ster logo to the right center as if chihaya was looking into it. kinda want to print this out as a "insert-media-here/cd/dvd" cover art

last image, but not least, and who cares about 72, she's got the curves
LOL

guess that's it for today

If anyone doesn't have it and is interested, Vol. 4 is up on eBay shipping worldwide for only $55 + shipping costs ($4 within US). That's less than half of the MSRP.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Idolmaster-Anime-G4U-Pack-vol-4-PS3-Blu-ray-/271045222768?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item3f1b8de170

I'll vouch for the guy because I bought Vol. 3 from him. It's definitely new like he says.

Check out the tape: http://i.imgur.com/pj5LX.jpg
And the game's seal: http://i.imgur.com/QB6m0.jpg & http://i.imgur.com/wcUPJ.jpg

Jump on it while you can if you want it. It ends in less than two days. The seller is an awesome guy. He sold me mine for $60 with no shipping and found out that he couldn't send it via the process he wanted, so he bumped it up to Priority shipping for me at no cost. I ordered it on Thursday afternoon and got it in today (and Monday was a holiday, or I would have had it yesterday). He knocked the price down for this one to accommodate the higher shipping cost. It actually comes out a buck less than what I paid.

Nice you got the same volume as I do. The guy ran out of Vol 4, although I would only get it for the episodes. I wonder why Vol 3 goes for very low compare to the other ones? Is it because of Yukiho being in the cover?

3 and 4 always seemed to go for the lowest. If I had to guess, Yukiho's popularity and the fairly uninteresting/embarassing cover with Takane are what keep those two in high stock.

I'm keeping my eye out for 5 next. Yayoi's the only one missing from my top three idols.

And then some "okay" deals.

Vol 7, $65 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Idol-Master-G4U-Pack-Vol-7-PS3-Import-Japan-/400377144744?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d385665a8)

It's just a clear file for holding papers in.  Artwork on the outside of the file is the G4U Vol 5 artwork.

Oh that makes sense. I've never actually seen what a clear file looks like in practice so the more you know

Out of curiosity, what's the going rate for the entire nine volumes, including the first volume in the PS3 LE? Looking at buying.

If you end up buying them through the PSN store it's 300 for the first and 1500 yen for each consecutive volume.

300 + 8 (1500) = 12300 yen

If it's physical copies you're looking for, Im@s2 PS3 LE will still set you back around 8000 yen.

All the others seem to average out to around 2000 yen or so a pop. So, around 24000 yen if you're looking for physical copies of everything. Then domestic/international shipping.

These are all used prices, by the way. A physical Im@s2 PS3 LE new is around 37500 yen or so, I think I saw?

Are you basing this off something? I can't find anywhere that has the G4U volumes for 2000 yen, and if it were, I'm assuming it'd just be for the game. I'm wanting the complete set with anime and extras in each volume, not just the games themselves.

I just looked at amazon.co.jp real quick. Title said Im@s G4U! Anime and Game Pack for all of 'em... but well, this time I decided to crack open the list of whoever's selling, and am seeing a few "Just the game, not the pack" comments. Bleh, sorry 'bout that.

I suppose you could just look at the prices for it new to have a better chance of nabbing the full pack, but dang those price tags.

I have the opportunity to buy the complete PS3 limited edition w/ Vol. 1 + Vol. 2 opened + Vol. 3~8 unopened for 40,000 yen before shipping, so I think I'll go with that. Divided, it's 4500~5000 yen for each volume, making the LE that price as well.

Nice. Just found some decent prices and 2 and 8, so I'll be right there with you as soon as I can track down a copy of 9 that doesn't cost stupid amounts of money.

That must've costed an untold amount of cash, unless said deals were particularly grand.

Anywhere from $40-80 each (except vol 1). Not terrible, all things considered.

For me, I think it was...

1 - $135 (Sold the iM@S2 copy for $50 since I already had it, so really $85)
2 - $60
3 - $60
4 - $40
5 - $60
6 - $80
7 - $80
8 - $60
9 - $80

Can't remember how accurate that is, but it has to be close. Overall cost would have been ~$605 in that case. ~$67 per set.

Now I wonder if I should upload the 4200 image gallery a friend of mine made when he borrowed all 9 volumes of G4U.

It took him months, to say the least.

Apparently according to him 'It is every picture you could possibly want out of G4U.'

... Question is, would anyone be interested?

I bought them as they were released, so over 100$ a piece iirc...

Your conviction astounds me, to say the least. Those poor, poor wallets. D:

Oh, what the hell, color me interested seeing as I've only got volumes 1 and 8... the first of which being a downloadable. Go figure.

Yeah, no one's going to let me upload all 4200ish pictures without compressing them.

I don't know if they're all that good. When he copied me the folder, I just laughed because of the sheer determination he had.

Holy hell, guess I'll have to leave this download sitting for a while. xD

Can't say that I blame him for said determination, either. The price of these volumes are so mind boggling, though in honesty it's to be expected of iM@S merchandise. :P

Yeah, I ended up picking them up when they came out, since I liked the anime. Got some preorder discounts, but that's about it.

He just saw the thing and borrowed them one at a time, and basically went snapshot happy.

Yeah, that took a whole day for me to browse completely. :P

Looking on it, I'd kill to have Volume 4, just for the Angel swimsuits with the petaled background. So appealing~
