I would probably called this a 'Crowning Moment of Heartwarming' episode.
That could be the most emotional episode ever in the series. And also, let's have a standing ovation for Chihaya Kisaragi...
Looks like Kuroi's done it in the last episode from the beginning, and guess what, Jupiter is about to turn the cards out against Kuroi. At the hospital, we saw Harurun sitting in the waiting room, when the Producer and Chihaya are in the clinic. But when I heard the music-box version of 'Aoi Tori' during the flashback scene, I was stunned, and I have to get my blue hankie ready. When Chihaya (the second of my favorite idols) is absent in some shows including their show (from the 15th episode). As Haruka heads to the office, she meets with Chihaya's mom, and she presents Haruka a sketchbook, in which Chihaya's lil'bro (named Yuu) used when he spends time with his big sis in the past. As she talked with the Producer in Takagi's office (last week when he talks to Takane in the same room), the Producer told her that he is doing his best and we see a montage from the sixth episode. Meanwhile at the dressing room in which they will perform a concert, Haruka looks at Yuu's sketchbook, until Miki comes to see her. A few minutes later, Haruka has the ultimate key to bring Chihaya's voice back. Meanwhile as the scandal continues to spread thanks to Kuroi, Haruka heads to Chihaya's apartment and talks to her until, Haruka declares the L4U veteran to sing on stage to reach for the stars. As Haruka opens the door and enter and gives some song notes to her and Haruka leaves as Chihaya reads a letter to her while the others go practicing making some lyrics and rehearsals for their upcoming concert as Kotori prepares a another Luxury outfit for Chihaya (I wonder what's this called? Last time, it's Pink Diamond 765). And when Chihaya looks at her brother's sketchbook, she was go for it. At the rehearsal, I saw Makoto wearing training gear for the first time (wow she's perfect!) and Yayoi wearing it too! As the audience getting ready as the girls headed on stage, they saw Chihaya, and everyone is now getting ready for it as Chihaya emotionally cried. After RK (Ryuugu Komachi)'s performance, it is now time for Chihaya to set the stage, but thanks to the reinforcements of Haruka and the idols, a miracle finally occurred, as Chihaya's voice is back to normal. I am tearjerked for this crowning miracle as Chihaya can finally sing again. Good god almighty, I salute you, Chihaya!
Next week: Wow, I hear Takagi (Otsuka) and the Producer (Akabane) are doing in the preview! Can't wait for this.
Overall: 10/10

Gah, this is seriously the only anime that's ever made me cry.
Amazing episode, 10/10 for sure.
Also, I REALLY don't like Kuroi. That was a low blow, dude. Seriously. :(
NOT OKAY!

Uhu~ we finally get to the long-awaited Chihaya episode! And it did not disappoint!

Here, have a blue-colored napkin. *gives it to you*

I got to say this was a pretty sad and amazing episode. The ending was especially pretty touching I must say. So far this has been one of the best episodes yet.
9/10
P.S FU KUROI!!!

P.S FU KUROI!!!
Yeah me too, DAMN YOU KUROI AND YOUR DAMN DIRTY TRICKS!!!
-
Hrm....You got most of it right, but I'll fill a little bit of info for you. (Just watched the Chinese translation of it.)
In the beginning, Makoto reads the gossip magazine about Chihaya's past (with Kuroi's lies in it). Saying that the time when her brother died, she was only 8 yrs old. (Chihaya believes it's all true, even though Kuroi got some of the facts wrong. <_<)
Since Chihaya isn't willing to meet Haruka in person, Haruka put the song lyrics that was written by everyone in the mailbox (or how she says it in the 'post') along with the letter and Yuu's drawing book.
I think the costume is called "Stylish Denim".
-
@Clear: Oh thanks for the info. Got to think that Makoto and Yayoi wearing their training jackets for the first time since the first half of the series.
-
I'm not that of a Chihaya fan but this episode touched me really.... T-T

Yes. And I need to add this whole anime for crycute. The animators animate crying so cutely.
A Haruka and Chihaya episode with a bit of Studio Gainax like flair (reminded me a lot of Eva).
Very touching and very lovely!
Also, I am loving Jupiter so much. They should talk back to Kuroi!

Even though I absolutely loved this episode, there's still something that bugs me. What were those phone calls for episodes 17 & 18?

Maybe Chihaya's mom? or dad?
Also did anyone notice the weird quality shifts? Sometimes it's animated good and sometimes really bad. It seriously bothers me.

Hmm. When you think about it I did notice a quality shift when Chihaya was singing in the end. I don't usually pay attention to that kind of stuff so it doesn't really bother me as much.
-
I know it's been a long time I haven't posted in any of the episode thread, but...This episode was so terribly beautiful...Chihaya is seriously one of my favorite Idol now. The last part, when she finally finds her voice again, and starts singing...I could almost feel Producer-san's and everyone else's relief. Beautiful scene, without any doubt the best of the whole anime by now. I am really hoping for a full version of this song now, if there isn't any already.
I was also annoyed by the fact we didn't get to know who were the phone calls from, but I really think these were Chihaya's mom.
-
Every episode up to this has been enjoyable but nothing really amazing.
Episode 20 was one of the best things I've seen ALL YEAR.
I couldn't help but cry & I'm the type of guy who very rarely cries at anything on TV.
-
The phone calls were from Chihaya's mom. You can read her name, Chigusa Kisaragi, in Chihaya's phone.

You mean this looking as if it had more frames like pretty much everything else in the show?
http://i43.tinypic.com/2m7xi1g.gif
They save the budget/animation for the important parts and Chihaya singing was very important.
-
Really? I thought the singing part had less frames and was ugly.
Oh you meant the Chihaya part.
That was nice.
The other idols singing made me cringe.

I don't think it was ugly, it just wasn't very "animated" (they basically only moved their mouths and their heads a little). But the actual art was pretty:

But, to be honest, I don't find any problems with it; I felt as if it was all to put emphasis on Chihaya's performance and how happy she was to be singing.
-
Well, yes, at least no one's faces are melting.
-
The episode I will really complain about the animation of is 16. Hibiki... ;_;
-
Well, yes, at least no one's faces are melting.
No melting faces this ep but instead we got "UGUU" eyes.
Also am i the only one kind of disappointed by this episode? I mean it was hinted since what 4 or 5 episodes ago and it was just very rushed.
This would have been a perfect two episodes story one with full despair and looking back into Chihaya's past and one about Haruka helping her. Instead we got like 3 minutes of:
"Chihaya your brother died and you didn't do anything" ";A;"
Then she locks herself in her room and all the suffering happens offscreen and the rest of the episode is a positive-ish Haruka episode with Chihaya singing at the end.
But I guess Azusa helping strangers or the twins playing food detectives is more important.
It was just too fast for how much it was hinted.
-
Well personaly I thought it was a Haruka episode disguised as a Chihaya episode. That's just me.
So I guess I agree with you.
-
I enjoyed this episode a lot, but I couldn’t help but feel 22 minutes was too short for it. It was a good move to forego the OP for 90 extra seconds, but I would have wanted maybe 5 more minutes of cushion to milk all the emotions further. Let's re-release this episode again as a 45-minute OVA, okay? :D ::false hope::
Budget seems to be an issue with almost every series lately. Animation studios are short-staffed often, I think, and they're overworked for little pay as it is. I do believe the plan all along was for Chihaya's singing part to be completely fluid, but it still suffered a bit from perhaps a lack of time to clean up the animation. Earlier in the episode at 13:23 was an entire 17 seconds of nothing before Chihaya's doorbell finally rang, so that had to be filler (as there wasn't too much dramatic impact, IMO, for that length of time).
[ It's nice to see someone's chin move when he or she speaks; usually it's just a case of Cheeky Mouth (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CheekyMouth). ]
-
I thought this episode was beautiful. I especially loved the climax. I'm probably being biased, though. Also, I'm amazed on how you guys can notice the quality of animation. I can't tell unless it's really obvious.

animagic4u talked about that a few posts ago:
"A Haruka and Chihaya episode with a bit of Studio Gainax like flair (reminded me a lot of Eva). "

Yes! I knew I couldn't be the only one who thought this.

A similar trick was done (by Kyoto Animation) in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. Nagato in a room reading a book in silence ... except that one lasted 3 minutes I believe.

I don't know but in this episode (20th) have been metioned that "Chihaya's perent's are divorced as of several months ago"
(00:38).
Maybe Chihaya had got messege from her perents that they divorcing and have divorced.
-
I loved this episode! Chihaya is my favorite out of all the idols and I was so close to crying while watching this episode. Especially at the end when she sings! Can't wait to get the full version of Chihaya singing Promise.
-
Finally got around to watching this.... it certainly made me sniffle up too.
-
"Crowning Moment of Heartwarming" indeed.
I cried. Of course. Chihayaaaa~ ;////;
Also, this episode was total Haruka x Chihaya shipper fuel. <3 Chihaya's mother even asked Haruka to take care of her daughter. I don't care what anyone else says, it's canon to me. D8<
-
Not released in full yet, but here's half of Yakusoku ("Promise"), Chihaya solo.
