Someone made a Wikipedia page about it already. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Sendai_earthquake_and_tsunami)

Well, you can't say that to most of the people in Northern Japan, specially the Iwate Prefecture, but everywhere else seems to be suffering from earthquakes only.

I hope they're okay!

Where do they live? There are only a few places where the tsunami would hit in the Philippines, or so the local news say. Then again, we're all praying nowhere else gets hit.

Someone messaged me last night about it, and we were worried for our Japanese TA last semester who just went back to Japan this week >:  Lots of stuff on twitter going around to, stay strong Japan, our prayers are with you.

(And thanks for the stream Steve, it's really useful and informative.)

There's always seems to be that one ignorant idiot in serious videos. It kinda makes me angry at some of those people.

Ugh. Don't remind me. I have one contact on MSN who acts so insensitive about the earthquake-tsunami issue. Well, thank God I have more reasonable people in MSN to talk to about that.

Anyway, last night I was chatting with a relative who is in Japan (Yes, some areas still have Net and power there). They were still suffering earthquakes at that time. She was still up because she couldn't be at ease from them. People panicked, and possibly still are. I'm gonna have to try and hear from her soon, now that's it's noon there (by the time I post this message).

I have a friend in Yokohama. He said his work's third-story floor was cracked, but he's otherwise fine. That's in Tokyo in case you don't know.

Of course some  American thought it would be smart to take pictures of the tsunami...

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/US/03/11/tsunami/index.html?hpt=T1

And of course they want to cut funding to the pacific tsunami warning centre..

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42033145/ns/politics-capitol_hill/

Great. Seems like natural disasters make countries show their true colours.

I didn't expect anyone to come running to NZ's aid when the Christchurch quake hit,  but at least there were people who asked if I was ok (even though if I live absolutely nowhere near Christchurch).

All my Military friends overseas are safe and apparently theirs a report out saying that all US military personnel in the mainland are accounted for. So if you got military friends in japan and haven't heard from them they should be alright and are already organizing relief efforts.

Wow, the nerve of some people on youtube. I would have no sympathy for the people who make those comments and something happened to them.

But anyways, I think I have a friend studying abroad (don't know if they're traveling back already but...) and several Japanese friends who has family over there, so I'm praying.

News said 2 nuclear reactors are facing cooling system problems, and a small leak has been detected. they also say American government sent a coolant to support the reactors

I hope it's not too late...

On a side note:
Someone from another forum showed me a collage of screenshots from facebook, showing some ignorant people blaming Japan for Pearl Harbor and are actually happy about it, saying "KarmaIsABitch" and "did they pray for us when they hit Pearl Harbor?"

I can't believe there actually is someone so ignorant that they remember Pearl Harbor but completely forgot about Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Title: Re: Earthquake in Japan

I found that pic too, but in another forum. (Should I link?)

Obviously, people from said forum gives the best for Japan, and hope for an equal karmic attack on the posters of the collage. (not really on the karma thing)

Oh, and it seems people are making artworks to get people aware of Japan's situation and offering good luck to them. Artists, jump the bandwagon!

Don't worry too much about them. Once somebody says themselves that their morals are... less than admirable, there's nothing more you need to do to hammer it in. I mean, it's already been done for you.

And thanks for the link, Urby. It's the equivalent of going without lunch for a day or two. No big deal, and it might help.

This is very sad. I have Japanese friends, and it's very sad that they have to experience something like this. So, I recently donated money to help those affected by the tsunamis. If you care about this wonderful country, please donate (to organizations like the Red Cross). Even small donations help.

What about Akiko Hasegawa?

Also, I got a BBM broadcast today saying a nuclear reactor exploded and people are advised to stay away from rain lest they get infected by radiation, anyone can confirm that?

It depends on the website itself, from what I heard, they've post notices that some places and their suppliers have been damaged and will be delayed in sending things.

I ordered a couple of things from HMV jp, and the notice that there will be a delay came right after.

It saddens me that some of my fellow Americans seem more concerned about themselves that the Japanese. Everyone here in Nor Cal is hysterical thinking radiation from Japan is somehow gonna reach hear. Theres almost no Potassium Iodine left. Even the experts are saying "NONE OF THAT RADIATION IS COMING HERE". All that money unnecessarily spent on Potassium Iodine could've been spent to help Japan

This article (http://blog.realsalt.com/2011/03/real-salt-iodine-and-radiation/) explains why people think salt stops radiation and disproves it.

EDIT: Talked to my relative in Japan. They're okay for now. They're having some blackouts to prevent plants from overheating, though. She's thanking that it's cold there now (it's still snowing over at her area) or else they might suffer from overheat. D:

You don't live in California like I do do you?

I know that the radiation that's going to come tomorrow is very weak, but that doesn't mean our own government shouldn't take precautions to protect it's own people. Better to overreact than regret not doing so.

People are getting nervous here in Cali btw. IF (and that's a big if) the reactors do go into catastrophic meltdowns, I'm starting my cross country trip a few months early and I don't hesitate to say that the majority of California isn't going to be far behind me.

What news are you getting? This report just came out tonight.

Quote from: Mercury News
SANTA CRUZ - County health officials issued a statement Thursday discouraging local residents from taking potassium iodide as a precautionary measure against radiation sickness.

The statement said "The tablets can be a danger to people with allergies to iodine, shellfish or who have thyroid problems. Taken inappropriately, the tablets can have serious side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, nausea, vomiting and bleeding."

Local officials noted statements made Thursday morning by the California Department of Public Health and the California Emergency Management Agency saying there is no risk expected to California or its residents as a result of the nuclear plant problems in Japan.

But I wholeheartedly agree with ya if there's a meltdown here I'm headed back East.

I'm not sure if this is a re-post or not... A Japanese cartoon explaining the nuclear crisis to kids. It's very cute and very sad at the same time. I hope the nuclear ordeal gets resolved. It's been confirmed that they have been able to connect power to Reactor 3, and are working on getting power to the other reactors. The workers at the Fukushima plant are truly heroes; it takes a lot of courage to put their lives out for not only the people of Japan, but the world.

Not sure if anyone's died handling the reactors (don't think so), but well, it's radiation poisoning. I don't think people'll die immediately from it, but you might be feeling it a few years down the line.

I wouldn't worry to much. I heard on ABC that since the earthquake all flights coming from Japan have been screened for radiation by hi tech sensors then re-screened with even higher tech sensors. According to US customs if its on the shelves its safe to eat as far as Rads go.

I know. We Washingtonians are shaking our heads...ah, California...I mean really, there will only be traces of radiation, and you're exposed to radiation every day. We're all going to die one day anyways. XD

People are showing effects of the increased radiation but no one has died yet. When Chernobyl happened, some of the  workers died from radiation poisoning within a few months after the disaster. It depends on the person, but they all definitely have increased risks of cancer. It's unfortunate, but they know what they're doing. These guys are heroes.

Yeah. I think I heard they were mostly older workers?

... Daaaaang. I mean, I wanna say I'm sure they'll be fine, and they're meeting the whole crisis with protective equipment that's just as strong as what's being thrown at them, but... what's being thrown at them is a nuclear reactor, and it supplies power to how much of Tokyo?

Well, they'll get things done. They'll feel it later probably, but I'm pretty sure they'll get things under control.

And that's the thing about life. Certain people have to give up something so the rest of them don't.
