For me, the body design is not as important as the photo quality. Are you proficient in shooting with Manual? If you are I'm pretty sure you can get the most out of any camera you pick up.
If you go on Flickr, you can search cameras and get comparison photographs. There's usually groups that have additional information about the camera in question so I suggest that as a starting place.
(As an aside, a lot of my favorite Flickr contacts use the Sony Alpha a6000. Truly gorgeous work.)

I like having a compact system just because it's easier to carry around anywhere I go. Seems like the a6000's a really great performer overall so I'm super interested. I'm somewhat proficient with manual control, thanks to practice with the NX2000. Tbh my main motivation to switch is just the lack of a viewfinder besides the LCD. Too difficult to look at in sunlight. Also eyeballing a 16mm wide angle lens for either camera since scenery seems to be the main thing I shoot.

I was not aware that headphones/amp compatibility was a concern. Fortunately, I've only tried it a few times.

I think you'll do well with it. Honestly, some of my favorite photographers ever use it! It's a delightful camera!

I should get a flickr account. I've only been dumping my photos on G+ for the time being.
Also Samsung just announced their NX1 camera and it's absolutely beautiful. For $1500, it better be good.
