Wow, let's see...My Best Friend, Go My Way!!...Mahou wo Kakete!, Relations, Agent Yoru wo Yuku, and The iDOLM@STER. I think the only one I don't recognize is the 3rd screenshot from the left on that second scan.

motion capture dances, looks like ive learned something new to day in the im@s series.
yes, i actually didnt know they used motion capture
or more like i actually didnt care what they used and payed too much attention to the dancing :K

As an animation graduate, I'm actually pretty damn eager to see exactly how they overcame this difficult task. I wonder how effective this method is for more intense interactions between the idols.

Generally speaking, you can guesstimate where each wants their hand to be for a relaxed high touch, then just take the generic animation you have for that high touch at that point in the dance, move the hand to where you want it to be, and figure out where all the other joints in your body should be to make that look natural. Work backward - start with your hand, move to your wrist, then the elbow, shoulder, then the hip.

Hugs, however, are a different matter. Holding hands can be like the above, but you have to take into account someone else's body shape for a hug and then the other girl has to conform to the hug, which opens up another can of worms to deal with...

... if they can do that with Takane and Yayoi and make it look as natural as Haruka and Makoto, I'll be impressed. Like, so much my heart would explode. Sadly, it's such a natural action, I think most people wouldn't see exactly how difficult it is to do try to recreate it.

Sorry... I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to explain ^^;
Are you saying iM@S have done the animations by some sort of dynamic pseudo-IK system in their engine?

Agreed with the hug, especially since the girls are quite varied in body shape XD

Thanks so much for the links :D

I wonder how much they really do with the voices in the studio...the part with Nakamura Eriko recording Haruka's "The World is All One!!" didn't sound much like Haruka XD and she seemed to hold the notes shorter than they are in the actual song.
edit: I loved the part where they went over the motion capture and making the hands not float over each other XD All this behind-the-scenes stuff was awesome.

Yeah, that's kinda what I want to say. It's just a guess, but that's the first thing that pops to mind when I think of high touching or holding hands between two characters of differing height, when you don't know it in advance. Start with a general animation, then modify. That way, you only have to capture once and not a billion times with many actors of different sizes.

For simple stuff like that (where the animation wouldn't really have to be modified past the shoulder much), I think this would be pretty inexpensive.

Of course, one thing that would be really interesting to look for: when walking up to hold hands with another, do the idols take shorter or longer steps?

Also, I should probably watch the special. ^^

Something I can't help but notice...now, with the MAG-NET special...

Ami-chan is the only one who we haven't seen on stage (if Azusa's appearance in the "hey, this is how we make the hands match up" segment counts).
edit: or, I should say, Ami's stage costume is the only one we have yet to see XD
