Sorry, this was mentioned like a page ago, but 5-idol groups? Aaaaaawesome. Can't wait for the next PV.

Also, a songlist XD I thought that the songlisting (which leads up to 1 being "The world is all one!!") was all in-game songs the first time I watched the video. Then I paused it and actually read some of the song names / performers, and it turned out otherwise...

Kimi ha Melody and Mata Ne should definitely be in this game by default. As much as I love the "old" songs...I kinda want more new ones. If Overmaster is in the game, Colorful Days would (...should) be in it too, so maybe that'll be the oldest song?

It's so hard to guess. They're a little unpredictable.

Also, I'm glad Yukiho's new seiyuu does a good job of sounding like her. Poor Yurishii ;_;

Hase-san (AKA Yurishii) and her departure from Yukiho--

--Honestly speaking, I was surprised not just as a columnist for Dengeki, but as a producer. Ishihara-san (Director 1), can you tell us the decisions behind changing Yukiho's VA?

D1: Before we started working on Im@s 2, we had to work out the setting and timeline. We started working on the basis after the development of SP, way before Dearly Stars was even announced.

We were always keen on releasing a second HD Im@s game, while also settling on the idea of starting anew... something that will replicate the feel of the original arcade. Starting from zero, as so to speak.

Im@s just celebrated its 5th anniversary, but on the flip side it also means 5 years of adding on new material to the point of becoming humdrum. So to "re"start Im@s 2, we needed potential for the game to last two, three years on its own and not just rely on short lived hype, but to have a solid foundation of fans.

--Starting from zero, including the VAs?

D1: Yes, you're right. Counting from the very start of development, some of the VAs have been involved seven, eight years with the series, and they've grown together with their characters. But at one point, I had to ask everyone whether they were OK about sticking with Im@s, as it was about to go through a new phase of evolution. It was rude for me to ask them since they are so involved in it already, but at this pace, Im@s will surely become a lifework for them, so I needed to recheck.

During this phase in development, I had a long discussion with Hase-san, about conflicts with our recording schedule and her schedule as a seiyuu. Hase-san said it herself, that she didn't want to be involved with Im@s if she couldn't give it her best, and that it was in the best interest for both of us if she left at this transition point from 1 to 2. It was a difficult choice, but in the end we both agreed to move on.

The decision behind Asakura-san as Yukiho--

--Asakura-san will be newly introduced to the cast, but was she chosen in an audition like the rest of the VAs?

D1: We held an audition in summer 2009, with no avail. We just couldn't find anyone that would fit Yukiho's role. And if we as developers didn't think a VA sounded like Yukiho, what would the fans think? At this point, I actually had ideas of shifting Yukiho to another role.

--But by the end of the audition, you found Asakura-san.

D1: Actually, interestingly, we didn't find her at the end of that particular audition. Because we couldn't find a fitting VA, we started to go through past audition recordings, and while looking through, I came across Asakura-san.

--Past auditions... do you mean the auditions for Miki, and the Hibiki-Takane pair?

D1: Exactly. We went through past data, and when we came across Asakura-san's singing, it just struck us as being Yukiho-like. So we contacted her agency, and asked her to come to an audition.

--So Asakura-san, you took Yukiho's audition after the call from Ishihara-san?

Asakura: Yes. Acting out Yukiho's part according to the script, and going through Im@s songs.

--Out of interest, what did you sing?

Asakura: "Kosmos, Cosmos" and "The Idolmaster." I'm not used to singing at auditions, so I was all nervous... I didn't know the microphone was on while it was being setup, and everyone in the studio could hear me saying things like "I'm always so nervous when it comes to Im@s auditions..." Everyone outside the booth heard me, and I was pretty certain I was going to mess up again.

--When playing Yukiho's part during the audition, did you have Hase-san's Yukiho in mind?

Asakura: During the audition, not so much. But after I got the role, I started working on a rendition of Yukiho that was like Hase-san's but different. Although I constantly had to confirm if I sounded OK with the studio staff and Ishihara-san.

D1: The sound staff and I, though, were not really worried. When we first had Asakura-san read Yukiho's lines, we knew straight away that she hit the right note, and from then on we weren't worried one bit. Even in Im@s 2, Yukiho is Yukiho, she retains an inner strength masked by her fragile exterior. Asakura-san brought to life this image of Yukiho, and she did it very naturally.

--How do you feel, being chosen to play Yukiho's role?

Asakura: Before the audition I was set on getting the role, and now that I have, I'm going to put everything I have in it, because I don't want people who like Yukiho to hate her because of a VA change. By the time I got this role, I was already in love with Yukiho's character, so I'm set on playing the role of the cute, strong Yukiho... an idol loved by many. In a sense, my number one feeling was that I was going to do my best, not just happiness from being able to be Yukiho's new VA.

Thanks for the transcript, Pizzaman.

I think I'll put my worries behind once I actually get to hear Asakura's Yukiho voice.

I'm very excited at the prospect of swimming in new iM@S content...but at the same time I'm quite anxious on what damage it'll do to my wallet.

Pretty much my thoughts here.  I would like to hear Asakura's Yukiho voice as well.

and a super-idol unit of 5?! The Producer (or us if you like) will certainly have his hands full... (A unit if Ami, Mami, Iori, Yayoi, and Hibiki?! Oh dear)

So it is starting a new story from scratch.

Hey, that means 961 probably won't exist anymore. Awesome.

Hehehe. Scotty's gonna be pissed! :D

Well, I'm just hoping that  the origonal songs like Relations and 9:02 pm are still in the game, or at the very least DLC. If they keep them, I won't hesitate to buy the game.

Props to marx for the sig.

5 idol trios?  Someone do the math on how many combinations that is.
I am hoping for the DS girls, sience from what we've seen, the story seems to have alot to do with trios. They would be perfect. Lets hope for unlockables.

I wouldn't mind a whole roster of new songs, and being able to bring back classics (perhaps beating auditions with certain idols will bring back thier image songs? |Or some other idol-specific criteria.)

Since there's no new trailer again, hopefully it'll be there tomorrow... or always wait till the 9th, when new Yukiho's voice will be a free DL from Im@s Mobile.

Asakura-san and Im@s--

--You've been to Im@s auditions previously, but when did you find out about the idol, Yukiho?

Asakura: Before I went to my first Im@s audition, I did research into the game. I also got invites from my agency, Artsvision, and have been to a few live concerts. I knew what all the idols are like, and their VAs too. I was also lucky enough to be surrounded by Yukiho fans, so I got a lot of insight into her.

--So, Yukiho... what were your first impressions of her?

Asakura: Fragile like a flower... and digs holes.

-- Haha!. Then, what were your impressions on Im@s as a game?

Asakura: It's very different from other voice acting jobs I've done in the past. Normally a seiyuu's job is to give characters a voice, and when going on stage, you go on stage as yourself, not the character. But in the case of Im@s, we have the idols, then we have the seiyuu, and while we are two separate entities, we feel so close to each other. This is something I've never experienced before.

--I guess that's one appeal of Im@s, but it must be hard on the VA too. Asakura-san, do you have any similarities to Yukiho?

Asakura: I'm usually the one to go to the back row and be slightly off the center, so I guess that is a similarity with Yukiho. I also like dark places... whenever I say Yukiho's "I'm going to dig hole and bury myself!", I feel so much at home. Oh, but gradually I've started to sense Yukiho's inner strength while recording her lines. She's actually a strong girl with a strong will... I think I share that with Yukiho too.

Asakura-san and sempai Im@s VAs--

--Your agency, Artsvision, is also the agency where Nakamura-san (Haruka) and Hasegawa-san (Miki) works. Were you friends with them before being involved with Im@s?

Asakura: Before being chosen for Yukiho's role, I didn't talk with them much, only talked about when the next live concert is, and things like that. So now that I'm Yukiho all of a sudden, I was at a loss for who to talk to. We've only recently started talking to each other as friends, after I met the two of them at another recording studio and they congratulated me on being part of the Im@s team.

--What were their reactions when you told them your role?

Asakura: The first thing they asked me was "how many songs are you going to record?"

--Hehe, a hard road all the other VAs have walked in the past. The first time you worked as a team was at this live concert, correct?

Asakura: Recording for the game is done solo, so I met some of the seiyuus for the first time when preparing for the live. I hope I get to know them well soon. They are all very kind though, and when I couldn't get my dance right, they stuck with me until I could work out my mistakes. Akiko-chan, Yumi-chan and Nuu-Nuu are fun to talk to during breaks, and Eriko-san is always so nice to me.

Before the live, a message to producers--

--What are your impressions of Im@s fans - the producers?

Asakura: While I was watching previous live events from the back of the hall, I didn't see a single person taking a break from cheering. Everyone together as a team and cheering... I go to other live events too, but no other events have so much energy and unity. I hope they accept me as part of that too.

--What are your feelings about being announced as Yukiho's new seiyuu at the live?

Asakura: I'm looking forward to it! It was around this time last year when I was chosen, and right after I was chosen I was full of spirit, although when recording started, I started to become afraid whether the fans would accept me or not, whether I would be able to be Yukiho. But now that I've done everything I can up to this point, I'm purely happy to be part of the Idolm@ster team.

--And now, the same question to Ishihara-san. Any worries about todays announcement?

D1: I've nothing to worry about. Hase-san's Yukiho is Yukiho. Asakura-san's Yukiho is also Yukiho. It doesn't mean Hase-san's Yukiho would just disappear, and since Asakura-san's Yukiho has finished recording, I can assure you that Yukiho will still remain being cute. I can guarantee everyone that Yukiho will remain unchanged and still be the idol everyone loves. Of course, just saying this in text has little meaning, and so there'll be a chance for everyone to listen to Asakura-san's Yukiho voice.

--Do you any specific plans for this?

D1: On Im@s Mobile, we'll be distributing free ring-voices of new Yukiho, since it's the most accessible platform right now. Afterwards, through radio and other means. we'll steadily reveal the voice of new Yukiho to the public. The sudden announcement will indeed be a shock to producers and it's not in my good will to leave it at that. July is only just a doorstep.

--I understand now. New Yukiho, to everyone.

D1: Of course, it's not just Yukiho who'll need to be known. I want everyone to notice Yukiho as a character again, but also everyone to see what Asakura-san is like. Having the character known is the most important aspect, but establishing a strong connection with the seiyuu will be a strong backbone, and will make the character seem much more human and appealing.

Because the theme of Im@s 2 is "unity", I hope everyone will be united by the time the game is released.

Where Yukiho goes from here, and where Asakura-san goes from here--

--Because Asakura-san will play Yukiho, would there be changes to her character and personality?

D1: Because of the nature of characters and their relation to VAs, some things from the seiyuu might get passed along to Yukiho. Yukiho is Yukiho, but will be "Asakura-san's Yukiho", and hopefully gain new things along the way.

My philosophy is that good characters never stay static. Take Haruka for example. At the start of the series, she may not have had a lot of character, but over the years, how people see her has passed onto her character, and in a way Nakamura-san has pulled her through so that she could grow up to be Haruka we all know and love.

--Producers around Japan, producing Haruka.

D1: Right, and I believe that fits the concept of idols perfectly. So Yukiho as a character will change as Asakura-san plays her role, and I think that this is a good thing. Going through changes like this will make her more idol-like.

When the arcade started, the idols only existed inside my head, but now they're inside all of us, the staff and the fans alike. We all perceive them a little bit differently, and that gives depth to the characters. No longer are characters invented and owned by the original creator, but rather owned and raised by all of us. And I'm at the far end of the spectrum, at the end where we can make the amendments. Therefore it's the duty of staff members such as us to shift the idols to a more desirable and fitting direction.

--By playing Yukiho, do you think you have changed? Do you think you will change?

Asakura: Not just Yukiho, but when I started my job in the Im@s series, everyday was an adventure. But now I'm getting more and more used to it, and I'm prepared to walk forward, hand-in-hand with Yukiho.

--Any words to all the producers?

Asakura: Honestly, I've never had my heart beat so fast. Also, I wonder how many fans I'll have by the time this is online. I hope I have people cheering for me, even though I'm just a free bonus that comes with everybody's beloved Yukiho.

D1: I expect everyone to be surprised at this revelation. First off, I need to apologize to everyone for being the harbinger of shock and awe. But for Im@s 2, in order to make Haruka and others shine more than ever, and to make everyones producer life better, one can't be afraid to make changes. But I want everyone to understand that I won't mess with the characters that were raised by all of you. This time around, we have a plan with a longer time-frame in mind, so in the end, I hope everyone will be happy.

This isn't just a decision made by me as a director, but also as a producer. And I hope you stick around to see the results.

--Finally, a request to Asakura-san. A message for Yukiho?

Asakura: Stay sweet and strong, and don't stop being your natural self. I'll be next to you at all times, and I hope we can be together, as a pair.

--Thank you!
