I did this several times with the Tales series, and really learned nothing much besides basic Japanese and words that I'd never need to use anyways.

I've been trying to study the language on my own, but I would prefer a classroom environment so I can have others to talk with so I can practice what I learn for the language. I can pick up words here and there, but it isn't enough to maximize gameplay for Idolm@ster. (and kanji are still but squiggly lines to me)

I'd prefer a Tutor sense it would be one on one and faster to learn but yet again a classroom enviroment would be funner to practice Japanese with other people.

IMO, having a classroom environment with a moderate amount of people is the way to go when learning a foreign language.
BTW, today is Idolmaster's 5th birthday (since official arcade release.)
