Actually, I've heard of a prototype that doesn't use a runway.
It takes off and lands by stopping in place and using multiple jets of air to slowly take off.
But such jets aren't the ones in question so I guess you're right. XD

Ah yes the lovely f-35B (seen in my signiture) is the latest plane that uses this ability to vertically take off. the first of its kind to vertically take off and fly above the speed of sound.

It's not the first supersonic V/STOL made. But it IS the first to enter production and service.
