I had some time to try the beta myself... and I'm kinda mixed to negative about it. Like I think the issue is that looking back, I felt like it was decent for a free FPS game. Then I realized this was a beta for a (supposedly) AAA title releasing soon for $60.
Now there were things I liked about it, don't get me wrong. It may not be as fast as the classics, but it still seemed faster than the CoD games it's inevitably compared to. A rocket launcher as a main weapon's pretty fun, the revenant mode is fun, and having a shooter where health pickups are a necessity is pretty refreshing. I may not play as many shooters nowadays to tell that off the bat, but it helps me to know that the person I'm shooting at isn't going to mostly recover after taking cover for a couple of seconds. Unfortunately, I'm hard-pressed to say much more good about it. The other weapons just handled so oddly for me, especially the shotgun. I felt like it worked better when you WEREN'T up close somehow. And maybe it's because I turned off aim assist (I played the beta on the Xbox for a couple of hours), but I still felt like your body hits did nothing if they weren't consistent. I also hated the muted effects of being shot at. Sure, the game shows you a convenient arrow to someone shooting at you. But I found I react more to getting shot at in games when there's a noticeable noise or image of me getting hit, and people shooting at you in this beta was just so damn silent. It felt like your best advantage was to get the first shot or sneak up on people... well, that or be a revenant. Despite all my initial troubles, I got 8 kills in a row as revenant before timing out of it.
Though even if most of this is cleaned up, the experience felt very... basic. It's certainly not enough to sell me on buying the game for it. I don't feel that bad since it was decent enough for a free try, but that's also not really a good thing.
