Started playing Ar Nosurge (didn't play Ciel).
I certainly didn't expect to like it so much when I couldn't get into any installment of the Atelier series. Thank you Gust.

Is it because how the atelier games are structured that you couldn't get into the series? 

For me, I couldn't get into the series because how the games were structured.  (But, I did play a few of them on the PS2, but those were kind of different from the normal atelier games).

I think the time limit put me off. Which is a stupid reason in hindsight because it's not a hard limit to game over, if I recall.

In both cases I'm straight in the middle of the target demographic. Tried Ar Nosurge since I never played Ciel Nosurge or any other Ar Tonelico, and I'm not currently disappointed. I'm missing a portion of the story that was found in Ciel, but it doesn't hamper anything as far as I'm aware. I decidedly like the battle system, and synthesis, while somewhat important in terms of gameplay, is basically a glorified reason to add more character scenes, which I'm all for. Add in some (a lot of) songs and nice boss battles.

I-it's not that I like tsunderes, but damn if Inori Minase doesn't do a great job on this one. Cass a best.

I haven't given up on Atelier games yet. I'll get around to play at least Totori one day.

Cass is voiced by Kugyuu? Damn, i didn't notice... Well admittedly Iori is my least favorite out of 765 pro.

As for the story in Ciel: Before playing Ar i read this: http://www.unit03.net/view/Ciel_nosurge/Summary It's a very extensive writeup in english of the story of ciel. First i planned to play Ciel in Japanese before playing Ar. Considering how long it took me to read this in English, i'm grad i didn't play it in Japanese... While i can understand most of it, i'm quite slow when reading Japanese.

I'd say there are only 2 things missing story wise if you don't know the story of Ciel:
1) Why exactly are they on a space ship, but iirc that is at least briefly explained at some point in the story
2) The characters and the relationships among each other, but ofc these things become clear as the game progresses, some only very late though although they are hinted at beforehand.

Afaik they are planning a third game in the series, i hope they'll translate it to English as well.

Ah, not Iori Minase. Inori Minase. Name of the actual seiyuu. Not that Kugyuu is bad or anything. Now that you mention it, this is incredibly confusing.

Recently, she voiced Hestia (Danmachi), Chino (Gochiusa, S2 currently airing) and Carol (Symphogear GX).

I read the wiki writeup. I don't think I'm missing much. As you said, character relationships are heavily hinted at if not outright told, and the story of Ra Ciela is retold all along the game anyway.

The end of phase1 is insanely hype. This helped.
