I don't think you have to do the Star Lesson beforehand.
I haven't upgraded most of my idols because I like them in their casual outfits in the office more.

Now if only the tapping portion of the screen could be arranged in other shapes. We could have something like MaiMai for tablet. ^_^;

Isn't there some setting where you can choose the non-upgraded version to show up instead?

Yes, you can. When selecting the idols you want to show up in your room, the button on the bottom of their pictures will toggle casual/stage outfit.

star lessons only increase the money you get and something else when the corresponding idol is the center. As your center probably is a rare or an s rare where you don't have multiples off, they are currently quite useless.
Btw: i still don't quite get what the visual/vocal/dance is for, is it ever used or is just the total stats used to determine the points and the various stat types only matter for center effects (my kirari has "increase dance for all passion idols by 90% for example)
