From memory, there are days for each type of idol (Cute, Cool, Passion). If you play any song of that type during the day, you'll have a higher chance of getting event idols.

And there are three new idols for everyone - Kotoka (Rare), Honoka (S Rare), and Halloween Shuko (S Rare). So on Passion days, your chance of rolling for those three are higher if you play a Passion song. The other thing that'll increase your chances of rolling for those idols is your center idol's Star Rank (and not everyone else's).

Every time you play any song, there is a chance to get additional event item, wich grants you either event SR or usual R card.
If you play featured-color song, the chance to get event loot is higher. Today it's cute, tomorrow- cool, then-passion, then cute again, etc.
Your center idol' star rank impoves droprate.
Song difficulty (or stamina used?) seem to affect drop rate.

TLDR: Play songs> have chance to get event loot.
