I know that Japanese names are written in hiragana for one of 2 reasons:
1. There are no kanji for the name.
2. Kanji for the name are to complex (usually not Jouyou/Jinmeiyou kanji).
So which one is it in Yayoi's case, I mean IME does give several results for 'yayoi'.

I always thought another reason is the parents didn't feel like it, but that's just me. Though something tells me that's more a female thing.
