After years of hemming and hawing, bowing to pressure by telecom companies,
the FCC has finally grown a backbone and will seek to classify the internet and related services as a public utility (such as water and power), which would provide very strong protections for net neutrality.
This came out of the blue, indeed -- not even nine months ago the head of the FCC dismissed this legal strategy as too radical, so it's a very welcome change. It won't come without hiccups, given the plethora of potential lawsuits. Should it actually come by, then hell to the yes.
The FCC will vote on the proposal on the 26th.
