Really I'd say like Makoto it's a matter of personal taste.

OK, touché. I stand corrected.
I honestly think all of them are a personal taste thing.
I have yet to meet someone who didn't like Chihaya, though.

You break my heart </3 lol but it's all an opinion thing one thing i'm confused about is It's show "(masterversion)" i'm sure it was just It's show before so i'm wondering if it will make it into One for all like DREAM did  ???

I kinda hope it does. I really like that song, honestly. Though I must admit hearing solos of it is weird since I'm so used to everyone singing together.
Even Kotori, you guys.
EVEN KOTORI.

Agree. Also, add "Aozora no Namida" on that list.

Hi, I'm one of those people who don't like Chihaya's voice. She sounds too whinny and strained for my tastes. Doesn't help that her voice isn't that versatile for some songs (looking at you Chiisaki Mono, Good-Byes, etc.) =P

Now on topic...

I knew that they're going for the 'anime' style for the jacket arts as soon I saw the prologue CD and I'm not that much of a fan of it. Covers are pretty good so far but I'll wait for the full release to judge fully. For some reason, I feel that sound quality for "Suteki Happiness" is worse than in-game, though the rest turn somehow better, especially Hibiki's. I swear they're trying to make Makoto as manly as possible and I'm not sure how to feel yet.

I think ChocoCats dislikes Chihaya's voice about as much as Scotty dislikes mobage considering they won't stop bringing it up. w

I don't see how Chihaya's voice sounds whiny nor strained -- especially given songs like Saihyou -- but I digress. Bring on her CD already, Namco. :3

Ooh, yeah. I forgot  all about Aozora no Namida.

=P And there we go, I guess.
Chihaya certainly isn't the most versatile idol (I personally find Hibiki and Miki do very well in pretty much all kinds of songs), but I do like her voice.

Dat Kimi*Channel tho
Also I think Zekken is her most blatantly sex-related song and it's kinda weirding me out

Chihaya's in the third batch so we have a bit of waiting to do.

I could get if they said whiny as in the anime (I'm not good at swimming, I'm not good at cooking, etc.), but when singing? Although I did find it kind of funny when someone said Chihaya's practicing in the movie sounded like "bike brake practice". It did sound kind of odd there.

Really? I always thought Agent was the most blatant. "showing keyholes" and all. Also my favorite from Makoto's is probably Unbalance na kiss wo shite. For Haruka it's probably Tenshi no Enogu. And for Hibiki probably Kazaguruma.

All the CD covers are great, but Makoto's face is a little... Weird? Something about it seems off.

Just listened to the songs, and I'm liking how Tenshi no Enogu is still super 80s lol

Given her general attire (it looks like a camisole/boyshort sleepwear set), I think they're trying to go for a "seductive" look here. Whether or not that works is another question.

Makoto almost always being given the most blatant sexual songs makes some sense IC, considering how much she's trying to drop her tomboyish side and gain a male audience. She doesn't really work "kawaii" well 9 times out of 10, so what other routes could she take that don't involve her going back to her tomboyish traits AND work for her? That said, I can understand where it seems "off". Especially when at the same time, we're giving her Kimi*Channel as her OFA DLC MASTER and that's probably the girliest tone I've ever remembered her singing in

...at least we'll probably never see Virgin Load in the games. I'm fairly sure that trumps even Agent as "most blatant iM@S sex song"... and now I'm wondering if either Miki or Takane will get that for their album solo. Not sure how to feel about THAT. Inferno for Yuki solo please though?

Yeah, and the seductive look goes along with her solo song as well. Hibiki's is beach themed, Haruka's is... Suteki Happiness-ish, I guess? It makes sense Makoto's cover would be like that.

Makoto and Hibiki's covers were pretty good. A bit tempted to buy all of them considering 99 Nights is on the list of featured songs.
Personally I wish they did something clever with the covers. I thought the first MASTER ARTIST series was clever in the way they added English to all the covers, spelling THE iDOLM@STER. Maybe there'll be secret messages in the booklets.

99 Nights isn't included, it's Kimi Channel.

Sorry, I should have been more clear; I was talking about the Autumn releases (Miki, Iori, Takane) including 99 Nights, hence all the CDs.

These covers are terrible.

No uniformity or anything close to that.

I don't see how Chihaya's voice sounds whiny nor strained -- especially given songs like Saihyou -- but I digress. Bring on her CD already, Namco. :3

I can hear Chihaya strain her voice occasionally, such as in Nemurihime. I feel like that's the most tired her voice has ever been. The song's melody wandered around and the build up was weird, so I didn't really enjoy it.

That being said, she has more hits than misses. I really can't hear what part of her voice is supposed to be "whiny". Chihaya's voice is usually pleasant to listen to - I didn't hear anything weird in Good-Byes, 99 Nights was great, Saihyou was absolutely stunning. The only exception to this was edeN, where she did sound quite weird. In most happy and passionate songs Chihaya's at least decent.

What surprised me when reading voice opinions on another thread is that many consider Haruka's voice to be "adaptable". I really don't understand why. Haruka's voice sounds thin and "brittle" most of the time. She tends to miss notes (or at least hit them weirdly) much more than Chihaya because her voice cracks. For example, her brute-forced Overmaster sounds downright awful. You can always hear her struggling with transitions and she just doesn't have enough power to maintain strong notes. I can understand if someone were to call Haruka's voice "whiny" (although I like Haruka, that's something I'd accept), but I actually can't hear any of those qualities in Chihaya's voice at all.

As a side note - I do like Haruka's voice when it's soft and smooth such as in Looking for Love, Kosmos Cosmos, Me ga Au Toki, and parts of 99 Nights.

You mean the cover selection or the recordings? I feel like the recordings are a bit off, but I can't quite put my finger on what.

I can hear Chihaya strain her voice occasionally, such as in Nemurihime. I feel like that's the most tired her voice has ever been. The song's melody wandered around and the build up was weird, so I didn't really enjoy it.
That was recorded after her CD had been delayed for a week due to Mingosu having voice issues, so that's probably why.

Yeah I'm accepting that these recordings aren't all done at the same time and each idol has their off days at times. Before OFA I had expected to like her version of edeN most of the Shiny Festa songs, but ended up liking her Visionary most. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phqRwKlTpOo

This also can happen with in game versions compared to master versions. For example I didn't like the previews of the master versions of the new solo songs compared to the in game versions, but it could be I'm just not used to them yet. In the past some songs took a few listenings before I enjoyed them.

I'm also sometimes surprised by what some people say about the idol's voices. Speaking of Haruka I prefer Chihaya's version of I want, mostly because it sounds more forceful I guess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqFLt-NyGuI

I think Chihaya's range is pretty good, and it's only gotten better since the beginning (although some of those tracks were recorded uncutely on purpose). I feel like even if she can't vibrato like Azusa, she tries to make it up with her power. Her specialty tends to be strong long notes in my opinion.

So in the past she had an issue where she was always singing powerfully even on songs that didn't need it, but I feel like this has changed a bit since OFA with songs like Kimi Channel and 99 Nights (where in the latter she changes between loud and soft constantly).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dWVrc-Bfs0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGit9y4M8dw

As for strained, I was surprised how high the notes got in Saihyou.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blJgHVtxu8Q

I haven't heard like Chihaya was straining herself, but maybe I'm just missing something.

As a side note - I do like Haruka's voice when it's soft and smooth such as in Looking for Love, Kosmos Cosmos, Me ga Au Toki, and parts of 99 Nights.
Another thing is I don't value singers just on objective quality. I also consider more subjective things like how they fit the song or other things in their voice. For example I find that some of Haruka's songs and covers are comforting to listen to because it's her voice.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuXMS-DlSQk
