Sugoi Japan overseas anime release chance
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:30:43 pm »
Sugoi Japan has put up a list of anime titles to choose from which includes the idolmaster anime (yes the movie is also included). For those who want to show idolmaster more global support it'd be a good idea to vote.

What is Sugoi Japan's goal?

Quote
The vote, organized by The Yomiuri Shimbun and slated for early October to late December this year, aims to extend the reach of “SUGOI JAPAN®!” culture into the world.
A British book series [Harry Potter] has sold over 400 million copies worldwide, but only a few Japanese works have been made into Hollywood movies. Japan is also blessed with a set of cultural assets that, as we well know, have the potential to be beloved the world over. We particularly feel strongly about manga and anime, as well as ranobe and entame shosetsu―the abbreviated Japanese words for “ranobe” (light novel) and “entame shosetsu” (entertaining novel).
We are passionately enthusiastic about the amazing best-selling works in the four genres, and we want the rest of the world to know about it! Therefore, we have launched a one-of-a-kind project called “Sugoi Japan.” Sugoi is, of course, one Japanese word for “amazing,” “wonderful” and “great.”
To make this project work, we need the support of dedicated fans who know the leading works in each genre inside and out and cannot help loving them.
Everyone is eligible to join and cast a ballot in this unprecedented nationwide poll to choose the manga, anime, ranobe and entame shosetsu works that should be given an opportunity to go abroad and become global hits.

The number of already super-popular, translated choices makes me worried about idolmaster's chances, especially against juggernauts like PMMM :[ Oh well, still voted!

I'd assume that fans of untranslated works would be more eager to vote than series that have already been brought over.

I will vote for iM@S as soon as I get home! Bout time that series gets a legit, accessible worldwide release!

I haven't seen the list yet, but if that's the case, I HIGHLY doubt Madoka Magica will get many votes, since its ALREADY gotten an overseas release. In fact, why is it even a nominee? Its pretty redundant if you ask me.  :-\

It mentioned the list is filled with high selling well known series which madoka definitely is. I'm not sure what would happen to a series that already has releases.

If the 2011 idolmaster anime and movie were to be released overseas would you want them with subtitles only or with a dub included?

I honestly wouldn't mind either way. Dual Audio would be perfect so long as the English cast matches the characters. We don't want another Trouble Witches.....

I think they'd either do a love live type release where it's only subbed, or a k-on type release where it has options for japanese and english speaking voices but it keeps all the songs undubbed. I don't think any dubbed anime actually dubs the songs anymore though. The last one I can even remember was Ouran High School Host Club, and that was dubbed in 2008 or so...

almost every release nowadays has dual audio so I doubt that's a problem. I'd probably switch between voices to figure out which I like better.

I'd say dual-audio or sub-only - as long as the original Japanese is left intact in some form. It's a series all about singing, and especially with some of the younger characters, there'd probably either be a dissonance issue at play or otherwise difficult-to-replicate voicing. That's before attempting to make sure it DOESN'T clash with the original vocals.
Plus, if iM@S did make it overseas, it would be expensive to dub every single song that could potentially end up featured...

Great to see that iM@S ranked pretty high......but I'm not very impressed with this Top 10, tbh. Mainly because I know that about half of those ALREADY have overseas releases, so I don't see much of a point to this.

I had checked the whole list yesterday and only about 6 out of 50 titles had no releases here already.
