Idolmaster & My views on Unrealistic Standards of Beauty
millefeuille:
Yeah, the proportions in im@s are a bit off, to say the least, but as animagic4u said, it body structure plays a big role in this too.

--- End quote ---
Kanako's measurements, when converted into inches, are 35-25-35, so that means she has a pretty good hourglass figure going on. However, her height in inches is about 5 feet, so she's more of a short and curvy gal than anything. Her art is depicts her as slightly chubby but otherwise unremarkable, which shouldn't really be the case given her measurements. Really, most of the girl's measurements would give them hourglass figures-- Yukiho's measurements, when converted to inches, are about 32-22-32, and she's 5 foot 1.
Anyways, I think the wonky proportions stem from some combination of the creators not knowing how sizing and proportions work and the fact that anime girls aren't required to have realistic bodies. I will say though, that it's a bit odd that the girls don't actually look like they have super-ridiculous proportions. I guess it's a good thing they don't look like this, haha.

--- End quote ---
BMI-- Body Mass Index-- is a relative measure of one's height compared to one's weight. One's BMI is calculated by dividing their weight in kilograms by the square of their height in metres. So, it wouldn't be odd for Iori and Takane to have similar BMIs despite their height difference. That being said, Iori's BMI is 17.1 and Takane's is 17.2, meaning that they're both pretty underweight.
Fun fact: The verification test asked me what Takane's waist measurement was, haha.
ChocoCats:
Well, there is an idol who has breast similar to that picture above but it's not that extreme. And speaking of heights, I found it odd that Hibiki is shorter than Iori by a centimeter.

There is a difference between bust measurement and cup size.
Males, for example, can often have large bust (chest) measurements despite not having 'breasts' just because of the way their bodies are shaped. Everyone has a different body shape. A girl with a wider torso but smaller chest may be misrepresented.
Cup size can be a better gauge of how large a girl's bust actually is.
Just my two cents anyway! I still think anime proportions are BS ! w

That DOES make sense to me, actually. Still frustrates me, though. X'D
Sigh. Guess it's no use complaining, though. :P

Unfortunately not. :P
AkuAkane:
They're twigs because they're anime/video game/manga characters. They're not real, so they can be any weight. They're not real, so they don't have health problems from being underweight. Being skinny is, in general, considered a positive trait so of course the idealistic anime/manga/video game characters are almost always going to be thin or plain underweight.
Overall, unrealistic standards of beauty have never bothered me. I'm not really the type of person whose confidence is shattered by seeing models or anime/manga/video game characters who are skinnier or prettier than me.
I mean my whole life circled around video games and television when I was really young and as I got older it was all about video games, anime, and manga and I've never had self confidence issues, even when I had to deal with bullying in middle and high school. I'd say if girls just look around them at normal everyday people they should realize the truth of 3DPD. (and also that anime/manga/video game characters (or dolls since a lot of people use dolls as reference for unrealistic beauty that young girls are exposed to) aren't even real people and therefore they should be intelligent enough to make that distinction and not be bothered by it.)
tl;dr as long as the characters don't look stupid don't take proportions/weights/3 sizes so seriously
