Love Live started not as an Anime series. they've released 5 singles before the anime aired.

Fair enough, though it probably didn't help that the sources I was looking around on for info didn't mention much about this (they mentioned albums, sure, makes sense for a popular idol series - didn't mention anything coming before the anime release however).

On the votes, you can't exactly judge the entirety of Japan on one store - if this sort of board was posted at multiple stores, then perhaps it'll make a bit more sense to judge it as a popularity contest.

On a somewhat related note, the anime character database, Charapedia, held a vote for the Top 30 most attractive idols in anime. What makes this especially funny is that 22 out of the 30 (73%) winners are members of 765Pro and Muse, with Chihaya, Maki, Kotori (Minami), Miki, and Haruka making the Top 5. That means every single member of both made the list. Kinda says something, huh?

Actually, it says nothing.  At first I thought the ranking was for shows that are _specifically_ about idols, but it wouldn't have made a difference either way.  None of the older idol-focused shows I can think of have truly memorable characters, most idols in other shows are disposable (excepting Macross)  and this poll's recency bias takes care of the rest.
