Kuroba Hotaru's Route, cont.

Hotaru still does not feel motivated enough to put more effort into her work outside auditions and live concerts even after her little chat with Kenji. Her partners are clearly offering up more to the unit than she is. Still, the unit’s popularity continues to grow mostly thanks to the efforts of the other two idols as they felt like they had to go above and beyond to make up for Hotaru’s laziness. On the day of the Sunny Beach Festival, Hotaru almost misses her call time because she was just lying around on the beach and lost track of time. Once Kenji finds her and manages to wake her up from a two-hour nap, her frustrated partners had to help brush the sand out of her hair before she could get dressed. On the stage, Hotaru catches a glimpse of her opponent and cringes a little. The others wonder what’s bothering her, but Hotaru claims it’s nothing. After their unit gets humiliated, their opponent is revealed to be NAZO’s vocal specialist Kagura Ichimonji. Kagura immediately recognizes her opponent. No wonder she was able to defeat her so easily. Kagura does not even know why she thought she could take Hotaru seriously in the first place. People like Hotaru make Kagura sick to her stomach. To her, people who are lazy and do not even care about their idol career are worse than idols who believe their career is only a game, performing just for fun and to make people happy. Hotaru really is a disgrace to the Kuroba family name. Kagura suggests that Kenji immediately get rid of Hotaru as the only thing she is really good at is doing nothing. She will only succeed in dragging her partners down to her level, just like she did during her days with 961Pro. As Kagura leaves, she claims she will never lose to someone like Hotaru even if she does come from a musically talented family.

Back at the office, Hotaru reveals that she had to deal with NAZO in the past. When she was still with 961Pro, NAZO challenged and utterly destroyed them in a festival performance. Their producer proceeded to torment Kuroi, mocking his company’s so-called “legendary” reputation and even calling him a has-been. Kuroi was beyond frustrated but surprisingly, despite his policies, he didn’t wind up firing his unit, calling it sheer dumb idiot luck to lose to the new idol super-sensation. Hotaru finds Kagura and especially the unit’s producer annoying. They just go around putting on a show, strutting their stuff, and using lots of crazy costumes and special effects during every performance. Even if they did manage to easily defeat a juggernaut in the entertainment industry, Hotaru just thinks all that popularity is making them stuck up. Depending on who her partners are, they will quickly point fingers at Hotaru for the unit’s crushing defeat. Kagura was right…she really is holding the unit back. If the unit wishes to bounce back and achieve their full potential, Hotaru will need to quit her clowning and start taking her job much more seriously. “Either shape up or ship out!” Hotaru’s stress gets the better of her as she suddenly lashes out at everyone, telling them to get off her case as she runs out of the office in a huff. Kenji wants to go after her and see what’s wrong, but the President can tell she is frustrated. The loss, facing Kagura again, having to deal with her partners’ nagging…it was just too much for her to bear in one day. Perhaps all she needs is a bit of time to rest and get all of that stress off her shoulders. Kenji complies, but cannot help worrying about Hotaru. It’s clear that she really does not want to be an idol, but she is being forced to. He and everyone else at ZetaPro are willing to support her in any way possible, but she just cannot find the motivation to hold up her end of the bargain. It does not help that everyone’s impatience is stressing her out and only making matters worse. Is there anything that will make Hotaru change for the better?

As Kagura informs her producer about her upcoming victory, she mentions feeling a little uneasy about Hotaru. Considering her family, she seems to have incredible potential hidden away in that lazy nature of hers. Still, her producer finds no need to worry. Unless she somehow manages to find some inspiration somewhere, she is of no use to ZetaPro and is hardly a threat to his plans. In fact, to make sure Hotaru has no chance against NAZO, RyuuseiPro agents are quick to send a hot scoop to gossip columnists. “Hotaru…a disgrace to her family’s name…does not care about being an idol…claims music is a waste of time…would rather live the life of a hikkikomori…” Despite such harsh articles, several fans remained faithful, hoping to see their black firefly idol glow her brightest one day.

Hotaru gets her cool back next week. She does not even care about the gossip going around…she would rather not read magazines anyway. Despite her usual antics, she still manages to get the job done. On the evening after ZetaPro faces off with Ryuuguu Komachi, the President informs Hotaru she received an email from her parents in Sapporo. They have gotten word that their daughter has reached Rank C and national awareness. While Hotaru may believe she has accomplished quite an impressive feat, it’s far from good enough to be allowed back home again. They know she has the skills to become a top idol. In order for her parents to acknowledge their daughter’s talents, she will need to enter the upcoming IU and take home the championship trophy. It does not even matter if this NAZO unit gets involved or if there are several other idols just like them…they know Hotaru can compete at their level. They will be in constant contact with her managers to make sure she is staying on top of her work and not pulling any lazy stunts. They will also double-check idol magazines to make sure she is not doing anything that could potentially ruin her career. They promise they will keep on bugging her about it until she gets her act together. Hotaru almost passes out from the stress. Kenji knew her parents were getting desperate to bring out their daughter’s talents, but never expected them to put this much pressure on her. Hotaru believes the task that has been forced upon her is impossible. Besides, NAZO effortlessly defeated her not once, but twice before. If there are several other idols like them who can perform at their level, she feels like she just is not talented enough to stand a chance. She believes she should just keep doing things the same way as before so she and the rest of the unit can rise in the ranks. Kenji does not want to resort to potentially harsh words, but Hotaru’s pessimistic demeanor leaves him no choice. Feeling a little reluctant, he calls Hotaru a coward, claiming she is only taking the lazy way out just like she always does. How will she know she cannot defeat NAZO and win the IU if she does not even bother trying? Hotaru may claim she is not nearly as talented as some of those bigger-name idols, but Kenji can tell her skills are improving day by day (even though she hardly puts in any effort during lessons) and who knows what other abilities lie dormant within her? Besides, her fans’ expectations of her go up with her rank. She has to keep at it so she can continue to give her fans what they want…not just simply a show, but real talent and passion. Hotaru has to think about her parents’ plan in the long run. She cannot just lay around the house forever expecting everything to be done for her by somebody else. She is going to start living independently sooner than she thinks, especially now that she is 17 years old. She needs to start taking action and responsibility so she can take care of herself and others. Kenji apologizes for stating his opinions so harshly like that, but he felt like he really needed to prove a point. Sometimes you just have to be cruel to be kind. Hotaru calms down. She admits she has taken the “easy” way out several times before in the past, thinking it was the only way to go when she gets stuck in a trap. Having to participate at such a massive tournament like that just to be allowed back home feels no different. Kenji assures her he knows she has it in her…this is the main reason he chose to produce her in the first place. He, her two partners, and the President are not going to give up on her that easily no matter how often she loafs around during work. Hotaru figures she might as well give the IU a shot just for the heck of it. She might not have a choice, but she has nothing to lose anyway. Kenji is not sure if she got anything out of their conversation, but is glad to see she is finally willing to take a step in the right direction. It may be a slight improvement at best, but could this be the sign of something more? Hotaru cannot help but wonder what her parents could be thinking. Why would they suddenly force her to participate in the IU like this? Is there something they are hiding from her? It has to be more than just a learning experience…

Kuroba Hotaru's Route, cont.

On the day of the IU preliminaries, Hotaru feels confident enough in her newly-honed talents that she may be able to pass without much effort. Still, she kind of expects Kenji to tell her to give it everything she’s got. It feels like more of a pain to have to overexert herself, but if it means a better chance of winning, Hotaru may have no other choice but to take the opportunity. Once she discovers that ZetaPro has been placed in the same competition block as NAZO, she quickly loses what little spirit she managed to muster up. She is far from pleased to see NAZO’s overconfident faces again, especially Kagura’s. Kagura is surprised Hotaru hasn’t considered quitting yet considering her lack of enthusiasm for the idol world and the fact that NAZO has defeated her twice already. Perhaps another good sound thrashing from the full strength of NAZO will teach Hotaru her place once and for all. Hotaru is getting annoyed from constantly getting agonized by Kagura, but she cannot afford to give up. Her parents would not allow it. How will she be allowed to go back home if she does? Hotaru and all of her coworkers at ZetaPro know how much her skills have improved since their previous encounter. Perhaps this time, things will be different. Kagura calls her bluff, believing ZetaPro must have been overly praising her to the point where she has grown too confident for her own good. Much to the surprise of Hotaru and Kagura, ZetaPro manages to pass their audition although they still place a distant second to NAZO. Unable to believe that someone as lazy and unmotivated as Hotaru managed to advance to the next leg of one of Japan’s biggest idol competitions, Kagura exerts her pent-up frustration upon her. Apparently, Hotaru’s family’s legacy is finally starting to show itself. Still, the only reason she got this far is because she is lucky enough to have such dedicated partners who are willing to pitch in a bit more for her sake. To Kagura, Hotaru must have believed that her partners have become so skilled she decided to let them do almost all the work. Kagura claims Hotaru will not get very far in the IU because she just does not have what it takes to be an idol and promises to be the one to put her little run of good luck to an end. Kenji tries to speak up and let Kagura know just how much progress Hotaru has made, but Himeko quickly silences him, claiming that peasants should not talk back to royalty. She shames Kenji and Hotaru for upsetting Kagura. Kagura tells Himeko to calm down, claiming enough is enough. NAZO will need some time to relax and refresh back at their office. During the drive home, an annoyed Hotaru begins asking questions to herself. Why does NAZO happen to be harassing her? And why does Kagura keep mentioning her parents? What are their real intentions? Do they know something about Hotaru that she doesn’t?

As the weeks go by, Hotaru figures she might spend a bit of extra time with her partners. She has been performing with them for a while now and figured it might be a good idea to get to know them a little better. Some of the other idols teach Hotaru the long term effects on how her idol work can benefit people in so many different ways. Others tell her how being an idol is fun for them…it allows them to do what they love the best, whether it be just being able to sing and dance on stage, the thrill of the competition, or just bringing smiles to their audience. Even if Hotaru was forced to become an idol, she can still make the most of it and turn it into a fun, happy experience. Hotaru never really cared to realize just how much her partners loved their job. The path they chose to walk was not an easy one by any means, but they decided to of their own free will. Kenji and the others are glad to see that Hotaru is finally starting to come out of her shell. She still enjoys relaxing but that’s just because of her easygoing nature and tendency to avoid stress. Hotaru feels more than ready to face NAZO again after they challenge ZetaPro to a showdown at the Harvest Moon Festival. Unfortunately, the performance is cancelled halfway due to a pyrotechnic malfunction. Yamato suddenly arrives to pick up NAZO and mock ZetaPro, particularly Hotaru. He finds it hard to believe that ZetaPro would hire someone as pathetic as her. According to Yamato, they figured a girl from a musically successful family could easily become a cash cow for them. Even if she does happen to have latent talent within her, she has never been able to pull her weight and is nothing more than a burden for the entire company. Kenji and the others defend Hotaru, claiming she has come such a long way since her debut in terms of her talents and her personality. They are all so proud of the change she has made. Yamato simply ignores them, claiming they are all just too soft on her. The only reason Hotaru’s unit has made it this far is through sheer luck and the extra effort given by her It just goes to prove how stupid, gullible, and inferior common-class companies are compared to elite, big-money corporations like RyuuseiPro. Besides, it is not just Hotaru’s laziness that will cause the downfall of her career and her company, but her family legacy. He knows everything about her mother, even during the days before she practiced opera. It was a past so secret it was thought to have been erased from everyone’s memories. He can still remember one fateful day like it was yesterday. Hotaru is starting to get a little impatient, anxiously asking Yamato exactly what he knows about her mother. Yamato cannot be bothered to tell her as she does not really deserve to know the truth. However, he claims he will spill his secrets if she manages to somehow change her ways and defeat NAZO in the IU, which he knows will never happen. Once NAZO claims victory, he promises to ruin the Kuroba name forever. Yamato laughs as he escorts NAZO back to his limo. All of that stress has given Hotaru a headache. So many questions are buzzing in her mind all at once. She cannot think straight. What does he know that she does not? Kenji and the others help Hotaru calm down. They will make sure to find some answers so they can get matters straightened out. Nobody at ZetaPro is willing to give up on Hotaru especially considering how she is really starting to mature not just as an idol, but as a person in general. Kenji helps walk Hotaru back to the van.

Here we go! The finale to end all finales!

Kuroba Hotaru's Route, conclusion

A few days later, Hotaru gets a letter from ZetaPro. It turns out her mother heard about what happened between Yamato and Hotaru. Sadly knowing the secret would be out sooner or later, she passed a message on to ZetaPro in order to tell her daughter the truth. Attached to the letter is an old picture of a very beautiful idol which was taken during one of her biggest concerts. Hotaru reads the letter and is shocked beyond belief…none of this can be real. It turns out that idol was her mother. Back in the day, she achieved renowned success on a national level as her heavenly voice (honed from her days training in choir and musical theater) and gorgeous looks won her millions of fans. She was a top competitor in the sales charts and several of the country’s biggest tournaments and won several awards including the coveted IA Grand Prize. Unfortunately, she made a grave mistake. One day she fell for a pretty-looking guy who claimed to adore her talents and use her as an inspiration to become a big-time performer himself. The two eventually began dating as they constantly manage to slip past the watchful eyes of her management and the paparazzi. He promised her one day they will be able to escape the confines of the big city and live a happy, peaceful life without any fear or worry. Later, she participated in the final rounds of the IU. During both her quarterfinal and semifinal performances, the deceitful man went on a wild crime spree. Targeting the residences of the people who attended Hotaru’s mother’s concerts, he proceeded to vandalize several homes, rob them of their money and valuables, and even murder a few witnesses (including a few defenseless children). On the day she was supposed to perform at the IU finals, Hotaru’s mother finally found out what he was up to and felt shocked and deceived. He tried to give an excuse saying he is fulfilling the promise he made to her, but it did not matter anymore. He did not really love her at all—he was just trying to take advantage of her popularity. The authorities finally caught up to the criminal at Hotaru’s mother’s residence. The criminal was arrested and the idol was taken in for some serious questioning, believing she could have been an accessory to him. She tried her very best to explain her side of the story, not even knowing of his real plans until just a few minutes before authorities arrived. She was cleared of the charges against her, but the situation was reported to her talent agency. Her boss, however, was not nearly as forgiving. Hotaru’s mother was fired from the company and was forced to drop out of the IU. Not only was she caught in a relationship, but she inadvertently aided a criminal in viciously victimizing the fans who attended her concerts. The story soon spread to the paparazzi and gossip panelists. Her name and public image were soon destroyed. Her CDs and music videos were boycotted nationwide. She became so infamous that everyone treated her as if she were some kind of serial killer. Even her musically successful parents were shamed for raising such a child. Humiliated, Hotaru’s mother had no choice but to flee to the northern island of Hokkaido. She was desperate to look for work in the music field on a more professional level, but found it difficult to go outside because of her soiled reputation. Later, after she got married to a caring violin virtuoso from Sapporo and changed her family name, she got a serious makeover and auditioned for an opera company where she was accepted on her first attempt. Nobody knew this new opera singer was really a disgraced idol with a different name. Still, she wanted her tarnished idol name cleared for good. With her talents, she felt like she did not even deserve such mistreatment during her idol career…from being fooled by a traitorous man to the public humiliation she received afterwards. It turns out the real reason she sent Hotaru to become an idol was to win the IU (which was her ultimate dream), clear her idol name, and restore her family’s honor. She knew her daughter had the talent to go the distance and figured the experience would help her give up her lazy ways. Hotaru had no idea. That’s why her mother specifically asked her to try participating in the IU. What she does not understand is why her mother kept this a secret from her for such a long time. It’s almost as if her mother has selfish intentions. Still, even if that were the case, she has enough faith in Hotaru to put her family’s future in her hands. Now that things are starting to become clear for her, she decides to make a change…give 300% effort towards her idol career and fulfill her mother’s desires. Hotaru does not even care how much stress this will put on her. No more hopeless laziness! She is now determined to win the IU with the aid of Kenji and her caring partners!

On the next day of work, Hotaru enthusiastically asks her producer what is on the agenda for the week as she arrives. Kenji and the others cannot believe how rapidly Hotaru has changed. Kenji can see the fire burning in her eyes. He can tell she is raring and ready to become a top idol! Even though she is more determined than ever, she still like to kick back and relax when the time is right because there is just no reason for her to overexert herself.

On the day of the IU finals opening ceremonies, Hotaru overhears a conversation between Kagura and Yamato while she is resting on a bench. Kagura is relying on her producer to guide her to victory in the finals. Yamato knows she must win at all costs for the sake of her family honor. From what Hotaru heard, much like the Kuroba family, the Ichimonji family apparently has quite the reputation for its esteemed musical abilities. It seems the reason Kagura agonizes her so much is because of pride…she wants to prove that her family is truly better than Hotaru’s. As Kagura passes by Hotaru, she is disgusted with her looking so calm and relaxed. It’s like she feels confident that she will win with no sweat. Kagura assures Hotaru she will wipe that smug look off her face once NAZO wins and proves the Ichimonji family’s superiority. As Kagura runs off to find her partners, Hotaru sighs, wondering what could be her rival’s problem.

With the situation growing more and more out of hand, Yamato decides to hatch his greatest plan yet to ruin Hotaru’s career as well as her chances to win the IU. He comes up with a last-second addition to his scheme in an attempt to go above and beyond…

On the day of the finals, Kenji finds Hotaru outside the dome gazing at the clouds. Kenji wonders if she is acting lazy again, but she tells him she has actually been deep in thought for a while now. Besides, the calm air makes her feel at ease. After all that has happened over the course of her idol career, she has been thinking about her future and her partners’ dreams. Even if she happens to win the championship, fulfill her mother’s wishes, and be allowed to go back home, she is still unsure of where she will go from there. Looking at the other two idols, they seem to really enjoy what they do. It’s such an honor to be able to perform in a huge competition like this one. While they do currently have victory on their minds, they are still having as much fun and making as many happy memories as they do during their usual jobs. Seeing their smiling faces never gets old with Hotaru. She later apologizes profusely to Kenji for giving him and her partners a rough time and not pulling her own weight. She really feels like she has become much more responsible and independent these days. Kenji easily forgives Hotaru for her past behavior. He is very proud of her turning her experiences into lifelong lessons. He can tell she has grown into a very mature human being compared to the Hotaru he first met. Still, now is not the time to dwell in the past or the future. Hotaru knows she and her unit have a tournament to win and an insane producer they have to bring to his senses. Kenji helps her back up as they head back to the dressing room.

Once Hotaru arrives, she notices a red letter with a dragon motif on the table (guess who it’s from). It reads, “I’m honestly impressed that you made it this far. Still, I know everything about you and your mother. I know that the former disgraced idol has become a famous opera singer with a different name and look. I have friends in high places and my company’s influence is greater than you can ever imagine. I will make a deal with you. Either drop out of the IU and give up your idol career or I shall expose your mother for the garbage she is. I know she sent you to Honshu and forced you into the idol industry against your will. I know she left you to manage on your own. I know she will not let you return home until you are a top idol. I know how this is all just a sick plot to restore her lost honor. It sounds like she is a dismal failure as both a parent and an idol. What kind of mother abandons her own child and sends her off to fulfill her selfish, greedy desires? Oh, and let’s not forget that you are indeed her daughter…a spoiled, lazy brat whose only goal in life is to live like a NEET/hikkikomori. I hope you will comply with my offer for the sake of your and your family’s dignity. I await your decision on the stage at 6:00 sharp. Tardiness will not be tolerated.” Hotaru feels a little uneasy. Either way she will wind up failing her mother. She really wants to perform and show everybody just how much she has accomplished over the months, but she feels more trapped than the time she arrived in Tokyo and was forced into 961Pro. Kenji assures her he and the other swill find some way out of this predicament. The other two idols want to perform just as badly as she does. Besides, she has come too far just to throw everything away now.

Thirty minutes before call time, Hotaru is still a little reluctant to take the stage as she still has yet to make her decision regarding Yamato’s ultimatum. All of a sudden, she receives a phone call from an unknown number. A familiar voice tells her the coast is clear and she has nothing to worry. The voice anticipates a good match between her unit and NAZO. ZetaPro is glad to hear the good news. Hotaru gets her confidence back and eagerly escorts her partners to the stage where Yamato and NAZO await. Yamato asks Hotaru if she has come to a decision yet, but Kagura steps in and tells Yamato his plan has been shot down. Earlier, she overheard Yamato on the phone with one of his employees. It turns out Yamato did not plan to hold up his end of the bargain. Even if Hotaru did surrender to NAZO, Yamato still had boxes full of slanderous gossip magazines which he planned to distribute to the entire audience…he still would have ruined Hotaru and her family. When Yamato and the guards were away, Kagura managed to take the magazines from under her producer’s nose, throw them all into a garbage bag, and tricked RyuuseiPro agents into believing the bag was full of material to be sent to the recycler for shredding. The agents took the bags outside, unknowing the material was really Yamato’s magazine collection. Kenji can hardly believe it. To think his most respected rival would stoop so low. Yamato is enraged, unable to believe not only one of his best idols but his closest childhood friend would betray him like that. Kagura apologizes, but she claims this was all for the sake of family honor. She wanted to fight Hotaru fair and square to prove the superiority of the Ichimonji family’s talents. Any victory by dishonest means would probably bring shame to her and her family. Besides, Yamato did not choose Kagura to become an idol just to wage war with ZetaPro. He knows how talented she is. They have performed together several times in the past. Kagura wants to use this opportunity to prove just how talented she is to the one she cares for the most. Yamato has no choice but to quit his shenanigans and fight fairly. The rest of the conversation goes on regularly from there.

ENDING

A couple of weeks later, Hotaru decides to publically expose the truth about her heritage. Despite the fact that her mother’s idol name has garnered infamy, it was due to a horrible misunderstanding. Before she was toyed with by the wretched man who ruined her career, she was a very respectable idol…talented, beautiful, and kind to everyone, especially her fans. Hotaru claims if she had not been inspired by her success as both an idol and an opera singer…and a little extra help from her caring producer, she would not even be close to the person she is today. On her next work day, Hotaru shows Kenji an email she received from her parents. Now that she has won the IU and restored her mother’s reputation, her purpose in Tokyo has been fulfilled. They can hardly believe how much their precious daughter has grown up in so little time. Her parents are prepared to book a flight back to Sapporo where her parents will be waiting to take her home. Kenji is a little curious about her decision. Hotaru sends a reply to her parents’ email. It took her a while to decide, but she finally made up her mind after winning the IU. While she appreciates the offer to head back home to take it easy for a while, Hotaru has chosen to stay with ZetaPro and continue her idol career. Her partners and producer have taught her just how fun and exciting the idol world can be. She has made so many close friends and happy memories it would be a shame to throw them all away now. From now on, Hotaru promises to sing into the hearts of the community and leave a strong, lasting impact. Everyone is very happy to hear her decision as her partners hug her tenderly. Hotaru laughs a bit as she tells them, “Good grief, you’re going to make me tear up!”

Whew! That was quite the roller-coaster ride these past seven months! Oh, but don't despair...I am far from done with this project! Later on, I'm going to give every ZetaPro idol updated artwork (complete with coloring), include some original stage outfits, and add a few skits involving the story and some silly moments between the idols.

Thanks! Glad to see they all went well!

Not sure. I have a couple of ideas, but I could ask for a couple extra ideas later on. Plus, there is another project I want to get started on pretty soon.

Before I get started on my skits, I'm going to make a few more finalized changes as well as reveal some trivia regarding the characters.

Nozomi's voice is changed back to Nana Mizuki. She's back and still going strong! She's got the exact kind of singing voice I want to give to someone as talented as Nozomi. Also, I plan to give her a slight hairstyle change. It will be a bit shorter now and will not include pigtails. I felt like her old hair design made her look too much like Nozomi Toujou...people might suspect she could be a ripoff (even though Nozomi Uemura is supposed to have mahogany-colored hair).

Miku will now be voiced by Rie Tanaka. I was back and forth for a while now, swinging between her, Saki Fujita, and Hisako Kanemoto. According to Tanaka's TV Tropes page, she is pretty often cast as characters who are bad at singing (think Miku back in the start of her story route) although she herself is an amazing singer. I figured that, combined with her versatility and popularity, would make her perfect for Miku.

Chiyo's last name has been changed to Hijikata. I personally like it better. Besides, it still uses the "earth" kanji in Tsuchiya.

YoshiKO (the 573Pro idol) will now be voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi, inspired by her work as Haruka from Senran Kagura.

President Ryuuzaki will now be voiced by Tomokazu Sugita (young Joseph Joestar, Gintama).

Hinata's hair will now look like small twin pigtails, similar to Yuki Kaai's hairstyle. I also decided to give her freckles, which was an idea I've been having for a while since I worked on her story mode route. I find freckles cute, so I decided why not make a freckled idol?

Nozomi was named Nanami (七実) in the earlier stages of the project. I ultimately picked Nozomi (due to the lack of a Nozomi in the mobile games...oh wait, there was one in Shinkan Shoujou), but does Nanami sound good/better?

Reika was almost named Ruka (流歌), but I ultimately decided on Reika (elegant beauty) as it fits her personality better.

Miku was named Mirai (uses the same kanji) when she was created, figuring "future" would be a perfect name for a main character in a new generation project. However, her name was ultimately changed to Miku upon the popularity of the Million Live idol Mirai Kasuga. Still, no mobile idols are involved in Neo Vision. Is it possible she could go back to her original name?

Your thoughts?

I wouldn't let same naming get you behind it. Keep in mind, this series (counting CG/ML/SM) has two Shihos, two Tsubasas, three Ryos (although Rio is spelt differently, her name sounds similar), two Ais, and four freaking Naos! I think having two Mirais won't be an issue at all. Heck, Reika and Megumi are already Million Live idols, so I see that it isn't too much a struggle right now, tbh.

Btw, does President Ryuuzaki now have Dead Spikes? X)!

Let's see...Sakura Muramatsu, Karen Houjou, Setsuna Imura, Emi Namba, Hinata Kinoshita, Hotaru Shiragiku, Tamaki Oogami, Nagisa Aino, Miku Maekawa. Oh, and let's not forget ML's Momoko Suou...and it sounds like both Suou and Aida have a bit of an attitude in some way.

I think I'll probably stick with Nanami and Mirai. Looks we've got some official name changes coming soon.

Actually, there have been quite a few last-name changes early on in the project. Sakura was originally named Asuka until I created Asuka to add to the "main character" group. Coming up with something for Karen was tough...I wanted a name common among both American and Japanese girls (she was almost named Erika, Erina, and Lisa). Last names were derived from each idol's image color rather than their Appeal Elements (which I eventually stuck with...for example, Mai's last name was almost Aoba and Momoko's was almost Sakurai for her pink color).

As for Megumi, I almost named her Izumi (to give her a more water-sounding name), but I ultimately stuck with Megumi as kind of a shout-out to Yukiho's early development.

Holy cow, I've reached 5 digits!

Merry Christmas, ZetaPro fans! Here's my late gift for you: an origin story involving Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka! I promised one in an earlier post. Now I shall keep my promise and follow through!

From Humble Beginnings

It was a lovely spring day at the park. Young Kenji and Sakura were walking home from school together hand in hand. Even back then, they were two peas in a pod. Nearly everybody in their class knew this too. As they were walking through the park, Sakura began to hear a beautiful sound in the distance. It sounded like a young voice singing. Curious as to where the voice was coming from, she and Kenji followed it to a fountain in the center of the park where they found a happy young girl with ribbons in her hair. Sakura was fascinated by the girl’s singing. She could tell she was having lots of fun bringing smiles to the faces of all the other children who gathered around to listen. Kenji really enjoyed the girl’s voice too. He could tell her singing was not quite perfect, but he could see the passion and dedication in her eyes. Kenji could tell the girl loved to sing. Being a blossoming musician himself, he has experienced that same feeling before. As the girl finished her little concert, she revealed to her audience that her name was Haruka before she left for home. Kenji and Sakura soon departed the park themselves. On their way home, Sakura soon finds herself humming the same song she listened to at the park. Once she reached the song’s chorus, she began to sing its lyrics. Kenji laughed. He was thinking about Haruka’s song too. Sakura told her close friend that listening to that song really made her day. Once they reached the intersection, Kenji and Sakura went their separate ways as they headed home for the evening.

As the weeks went by, Sakura would always swing by the fountain in the park after school to watch Haruka sing. One day as she was walking home with Kenji, she told him something she has been thinking about for a few weeks now. “You know what, Ken-kun? That girl we see at the park…Haruka…she’s so fun to be around. I love listening to her sing. And I always seem to think about her songs every time we walk home afterwards. I think she inspired me. I want to become a singer just like her so I can make people smile too!” Kenji really liked the idea. “You have such a cute singing voice, Sakura-chan. I think you’d make a fantastic singer.” “Oh! Ken-kun! You really mean it?” “Of course I do. I’ve actually been thinking about becoming a musician one day. It’s like our parents and teachers always tell us…you can be anything your heart chooses to be.” “Aww, thanks Ken-kun! You’re so sweet!” Sakura hugged Kenji as the two friends went home for the evening.

Sakura soon devoted her heart and soul to her singing. She got a karaoke set for Christmas and used it often singing along to her favorite pop songs. While her voice sounded like it could use a bit of polishing, her parents were very impressed, believing their daughter was turning into an idol just like the ones they saw on TV. Sakura’s eyes lit up when she discovered these idols. She admired their cute outfits and their happy, upbeat songs. She even joined her school’s choir in order to hone her singing talents and continue doing what she loves the most. Every night she does karaoke, whether at home or at a café’s open mic night, Sakura would always don a cute, fluffy outfit inspired by those idols. Weeks later, Sakura soon discovered Kenji’s musical talents after he won a talent competition with his piano piece, just beating out the performance of his greatest rival Yamato. Kenji and Sakura eventually decided to team up, believing they could accomplish even more if they combined their constantly growing skills. Kenji played the piano while Sakura sang and sometimes danced along to his music. They performed in several talent competitions and school festivals where they gained modest popularity. Sometimes, Sakura’s choir teacher allowed her to perform an idol-style solo during a choir concert.

Asuka, one of Sakura’s classmates and closest friends, became Sakura’s most devoted fan. Asuka has known Sakura since they were in elementary school. At first, Asuka was not a very happy girl. She felt lonely all the time, especially considering her family’s situation. None of the other students really wanted to talk to her either, which made matters worse. However, once Sakura decided to sit next to her in class and eat lunch together, everything changed. Asuka felt so much happier upon making her first real friend. Once Sakura introduced her to Kenji, they became fast friends. Like Sakura, Asuka also developed a passion for music as she can both sing and play the piano wonderfully. She really wanted to be able to sing, but not a lot of people listened to her. However, things changed once Sakura overheard Asuka singing to herself one day. Sakura soon inspired Asuka to join her in the school’s choir as well as the small music group she established with Kenji. Asuka loved being able to perform alongside her best friend. It did not take her very long to get used to wearing the same cute outfits as Sakura. Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka decided to name their music group Tenka (meaning “sky fire”), inspired by using kanji from each of the singers’ last names. Tenka promoted itself as a “just for fun” idol unit backed by a piano rather than prerecorded music. They perform “just because they love to perform.” The talented trio went on to become very successful, gaining popularity amongst the students in their school and earning several rewards in talent competitions around the prefecture.

The members of Tenka eventually went on to their first year of high school. One day just after the school bell rang, Sakura excitedly runs up to Kenji holding a poster. “Hey, Ken-kun, look at this! A mall in Yokohama is holding a really big talent competition! Asuka told me she is free that weekend! Let’s go audition for it! What do you say?” Kenji was quick to accept her offer. It has been a while since Tenka got some real action anyway. Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka spent the next week and a half practicing a brand new song after school while the girls worked on the idol-style choreography. The upcoming Saturday was the day of the audition. As the judges called Tenka up to the floor, they entered confidently knowing their song by heart. Asuka wound up tripping halfway through the song, but she recovered very well. Three days later, Kenji got an email from the talent competition staff. Despite Asuka’s mistake, Tenka passed their audition and have earned a spot in the big show. The judges were very impressed and could tell Tenka practiced their routine very diligently. As Kenji forwards the message to Sakura and Asuka, they are both thrilled by the news. They could not wait to show what they have got at the mall’s competition. It doesn’t matter if they win or not. As long as they can be able to perform and bring smiles to their audience, that’s all that matters.

Then there was trouble. Asuka weak constitution failed her once again, causing her to fall ill five days before the competition. She had to stay home from school for a few days to recover. Kenji and Sakura were worried. Even if she does manage to fully recover in time, her lack of practice time could put her at a disadvantage. Asuka did not mind, however. Although she had her routine memorized, she decided to constantly run through each and every detail in her mind rather than pushing herself. She told the other two not to worry and just keep on practicing without her. Sakura, however, did not really want to. If Tenka needs to rehearse their song, they should do it all together as a trio. Tenka just is not Tenka unless all three members are present. Kenji reluctantly agreed with her. Practicing his piano part on his own is one thing, but what’s the point if the girls cannot sync their parts to his?

At last, the day of the competition arrived. Asuka was feeling better but still was not quite at 100%. Once Tenka was dropped off at the mall, they decided to run through their song one more time before taking the stage. Even though they haven’t practiced it for a while, their rehearsal went excellently. Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka soon deduced the secrets of their skill…the power of unity. While they were clearly not the best pianist and just-for-fun idols in Japan, they made up for it with their strong, unbreakable bond. Tenka was chosen by the staff to be the final performance of the afternoon, which made the girls a bit nervous, but Kenji did not worry. In the past, he learned a trick for situations like this in other talent competitions. Rather than watching the competition, he would always stick around in the back room thinking only about his performance. While all of the other applicants were performing, Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka huddled up elsewhere and had a little chat just to drown everything else out. It was finally Tenka’s turn to perform. Their song was Subarashiki Shin Sekai. They perform better than ever before. The girls’ singing and dancing flowed perfectly with Kenji’s brilliant piano part. Three hearts beat as one. It was as if the trio was speaking to each other through their minds. Even Asuka managed to perform masterfully even though she was ever so slightly under the weather. The crowd cheered, much to the delight of Kenji and the girls. However, the trio was shocked when the competition’s winner was announced. It was Tenka! As they receive their grand prize plaque, they explain to everyone that the glory did not matter to them. They only entered the competition just to be able to do what they love doing the most—playing music, singing, dancing, and making everyone that watches them happy. Nearly all of the mall’s attendees give Tenka a standing ovation.

There was an even bigger surprise to come. One of the competition’s attendants eagerly appeared before Sakura and Asuka. At first they believed they have made a new fan, but it turned out this man was actually the famous idol producer Yashiro Ryuuzaki! Now the President of Zeta Production (called ZetaPro for short), he was visiting Yokohama in order to scout new talent. He figured the mall’s talent competition would be the perfect place to find potential idols. As he watched Tenka’s performance he could tell there was something special about Sakura and Asuka. Not only were they very talented in their own rights, but they possess a sense of unity the likes of which he had never seen before. President Ryuuzaki then offered the girls an opportunity to audition at ZetaPro and become professional idols, believing they had real promise. Sakura gasped with delight. Her eyes lit up. To be able to become a big-time idol just like Haruka, the girl who inspired her to become a singer in the first place…it was like a dream come true. Sakura eagerly accepts the offer. Figuring her friend and partner accepted his offer, Asuka decided to audition too. Still, Sakura felt a little uneasy. If she became a real honest-to-goodness idol, would she be able to see Kenji as often as she used to? Kenji was not really worried at all. She was finally given the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to live out her dreams. Whatever Sakura and Askua decide to do, Kenji would always be there to support her. Kenji and Sakura hug each other tenderly before they pack up and head back to the parking lot to be driven home.

One week later, Kenji got a phone call from Sakura. It turned out she and Asuka passed their audition with flying colors. She decided to gather Tenka together at a nearby ice creamery to celebrate. While the mood was very bright and cheerful among the trio as they enjoyed their sweet rewards, Sakura was still worried this could be the last time Tenka would be able to get together. Later that evening after Kenji, Sakura, and Asuka returned home, Kenji soon finds a new email that perks his interest. It was sent to him from President Ryuuzaki. According to the email, the President was also really impressed with his role in Tenka. He could tell Kenji was a very kind, thoughtful young man and a very capable leader. The two girls seem to like him very much and have established a strong unity with him. The President offers Kenji an opportunity to work for ZetaPro as the company’s producer, figuring someone with talents and skills like Kenji’s could certainly carry his idols to places beyond their wildest dreams. Kenji was surprised. He never thought there could be any idol producers his age. Still, he was very eager to accept after getting permission from his supportive mother. Once Kenji sent his response, the President quickly replied back, asking him to do him a favor. “Please do not tell anything about this to Sakura and Asuka. I want to surprise them. It will be our little secret until the time is right, okay?” Kenji replied again, promising to keep his secret safe.

The next weekend, Kenji put on his best business casual clothes and hopped into his mother’s car as he prepared for his first day as ZetaPro’s producer.

Here's Asuka.

I apologize for the blur. I had a little trouble with the pen while trying to erase the pencil sketch...

Poll closed. Miku will now be named Mirai while Nozomi will keep her current name. I like "hope" for someone like her. I shall make edits on this page accordingly.

Anyway, here is a color drawing of Mirai Asou.

Quick question: Do I have permission to draw any of these characters so long as I give you credit? Cuz I really like your character designs!
