Shigure Setsuna's Route, cont.

Setsuna’s grandparents have been very proud of Setsuna’s recent success as an idol. They have decided to attend her next big concert (either the Black Pearl Festival or the Fujisan Rock Festival depending on if you already unlocked Kuroi’s group). Setsuna tries to urge them against it seeing how Seishiro’s condition hasn’t been too good lately, but they really want to watch their talented granddaughter sing. It would be the perfect therapy for him. Setsuna is proud to have such doting grandparents. If there were anyone who would always support her decisions, it would be them.

On the day of the Black Pearl/Fujisan Rock Festival, Setsuna tells Kenji and her partners that her grandparents are going to be in the audience today. She urges them to perform flawlessly…she does not want to embarrass herself in front of her own family. Kenji warns her not to push her partners too hard. The others aren’t quite sure if the performance will be absolutely perfect, but they will try their best. After a successful performance and defeating 961Pro/Ryuuguu Komachi, Setsuna is glad that she was able to see her grandparents happily enjoying it.

As ZetaPro returns to the office, Setsuna suddenly gets a phone call. It is from her Yukina and she sounds urgent. As she was driving home from the festival, Seishiro fell from a heart attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Setsuna is shocked and demands Kenji and Kaito to take her to the hospital. Luckily, Kaito knows the location of the hospital they are looking for so he is able to get there as quickly as he could. Setsuna desperately rushes into the building. As soon as she enters Seishiro’s room, the heart monitor emits a long, ominous beep…

Kenji and Kaito suddenly hear a familiar voice screaming in agony.

He couldn’t make it. Setsuna’s grandfather just passed away right before her eyes. A devastated Setsuna beats herself up over it, thinking she’s a horrible person for not being by his side all the way. It’s bad enough losing a beloved family member, but she also lost one of the only people who ever really supported her in following her dreams. As Setsuna goes down to the lobby, she notices Kenji and Kaito. They got really worried when they heard her scream. Kenji figures from Setsuna’s tears that Seishiro didn’t pull through and apologizes to her even though he and Kaito did all they could. Setsuna tells them they didn’t have to apologize. It was her fault for not being able to help her grandfather. He knew he wasn’t feeling 100% and yet he still went to the festival despite Setsuna’s warning. Setsuna really doesn’t feel like talking to Kenji right now. Her grandmother will drive her home. Kenji and Kaito sadly return to the office.

Later, gossip columnists receive word about Seishiro’s death courtesy of Yamato, who is familiar with Setsuna’s past. He figures a scandal like this will really sink Setsuna and ZetaPro. “The idol with a cursed voice? Siren’s song kills her own grandfather!” The incident makes the front page of several gossip magazines.

Later the same week as ZetaPro begins a new day of work, the President cannot believe the slander he is seeing in the magazines. As soon as he shows it to Kenji’s unit, Setsuna almost faints out of utter shock. Having to be reminded of her past reputation is one thing, but to think her singing could have inadvertently killed her grandfather was just too much to take. Kenji and the President think that story is just absurd. Gossip magazines are, more often than not, full of balderdash and are just confusing. However, their words fall on deaf ears. Setsuna, believing she really is cursed, hastily leaves the building in tears. Kenji wants to help but feels as though it’s no use when it comes to someone like Setsuna. He then informs the President and the other two idols about what happened with Seishiro. He figures it might have been why that story really offended Setsuna. The President decides to let everyone go early today so that the mood is a bit brighter next week.

Next week, everyone, including Setsuna, is feeling a bit better. Setsuna had a chat with Yukina last week about the magazine article. Yukina let her granddaughter know she had nothing to do with her husband’s heart attack. She, her fellow idols, her production staff, and even Seishiro (through spirit) are all behind her and will support her through thick and thin. Don’t let them down now. Forget what others say and keep doing what you enjoy doing. Yukina even gave Setsuna a ride to work today. Still, Setsuna is still feeling a bit concerned about that article…

Setsuna’s nightmares soon come true. She is turned down from several job offers, is barred from auditioning and holding concerts, her CDs are boycotted, and the company’s inbox is flooded with emails demanding ZetaPro to fire her (if they are not straight-up death threats towards her). Seeing that society is starting to hate her once again because of her curse, Setsuna soon becomes scared and unwilling to promote herself and her unit. However, there are some regions that do not believe the rumors and allow ZetaPro to keep on working. They will have to rely on them for increased publicity until the IU preliminaries roll around.

Shigure Setsuna's Route, cont.

At the IU prelims, Setsuna is almost barred from entering the tournament. Just as soon as she is about to give up hope, Chihaya suddenly interrupts. She is quite impressed with Setsuna’s talent and insists the judges allow ZetaPro to compete. Why should they stop her from singing just because of one mere coincidence? The convinced judges decide to allow Setsuna’s unit to audition. Unfortunately, Yamato rigs the tournament blocks in order to pit ZetaPro with NAZO. Believing her opponent is pure evil, Kagura is eager to take the opportunity to end Setsuna once and for all. During the performance, the judges are blown away by Setsuna’s raw singing skill, allowing ZetaPro to pass the audition. However, they still finish a distant second to NAZO. Kagura is surprised that not only was ZetaPro able to advance, but all the judges managed to survive Setsuna’s “cursed” song. Still, she claims NAZO is several steps ahead of her. Setsuna doesn’t stand a chance. Kagura promises to destroy Setsuna’s unit during their next encounter.

Back at the office, Setsuna has been sulking ever since she left the audition venue. Kenji and the President wonder what’s bothering her even though ZetaPro has advanced to the next leg of the IU. Setsuna believes her skill level is not as high as she would like it to be. She really wants to set aside some solo time to put in some extra practice. This way she can acquire the necessary skills to take on NAZO. After everyone goes home for the night, Setsuna stays afterwards for a self-lesson.

During Setsuna’s rehearsal, Kenji interrupts (much to her chagrin), claiming he may know what’s wrong with Setsuna’s singing. In the IU preliminary audition, Setsuna’s voice was still as brilliant as ever. However, she closed herself off from the other idols, worrying about only her part. It almost looks as though she’s dragging her partners along, being the sole focus of the unit. According to Kenji, the reason Setsuna can’t really perform at her full potential is because she lacks a sense of unity. This might be a little too much to ask of her, but if she could perhaps open up to the others and get to know them a little better, her part in the unit can flow perfectly with the other two. Imagine the endless potential when three work as one! Of course, Setsuna believes the idea is absurd and blows Kenji off. As Kenji leaves and Setsuna continues practicing, she still feels disappointed in herself. Then she wonders…all this time she only thought about herself. Could this “unity” really be the key to defeat NAZO?

Over the next few weeks, Setsuna chats with the others in her spare time. Most often she asks them, “What is your purpose for becoming an idol? Why do you and I walk the same path?” As Setsuna hears of their ambitions, dreams, difficulties, etc. she winds up criticizing their views, considers them annoying, or even brushes them off. Then, as she thinks about it, she can actually somewhat sympathize with the others in a way. She apologizes and tells her partners about the similarities between them. Setsuna thinks this might have been enough to help unify the trio, but in reality, she’s not really trying hard enough. Kenji knows this, but he decides to keep it a secret to Setsuna for now.

During ZetaPro’s next showdown against NAZO at the Harvest Moon Festival, the pyrotechnics get out of hand and set the stage on fire, cancelling both performances. As Yamato shows up, he blames the fire on Setsuna, claiming her cursed song nearly caused a disaster. Her own unit, NAZO, and even the audience could have been caught in the blaze. She should thank her lucky stars the crew was able to help control the fire. Yamato claims ZetaPro is a disgrace and Setsuna really defines how far the depths of the low class will sink. All of a sudden, Setsuna’s partners and Kenji stand up for her. They state they couldn’t have gone this far without her help. If her singing kills people who listen, why haven’t they (who have heard her sing since the unit’s debut) died too? She’s an excellent singer who takes pride in her talents. They will not let some crazy superstition let her do what she enjoys doing the most. Setsuna can’t believe what she’s seeing. She had friends who all care about her and support her through thick and thin just like her grandparents. All this time and she didn’t even notice. Yamato is disgusted by this display of friendship. To his eyes, friendship is weakness low-class idols use as an excuse to hide their lack of talent. He promises to destroy ZetaPro once the IU finals come along…if they ever make it. Back at the office, Setsuna thanks everyone profusely for defending her against Yamato’s insults and all the support they gave her since the day they met. So this is what it feels like to have true friends. She then promises everyone they will win the IU and defeat NAZO together.

Shigure Setsuna's Route, conclusion

During the opening ceremony of the IU finals, Setsuna overhears a conversation between Yamato and Kagura. From what she hears, Kagura must win the IU in order to maintain the legacy of her family. Yamato tells her he will do whatever it takes so that NAZO wins and her parents are satisfied. Setsuna starts to recall the reasons her partners and biggest rival decided to become idols. Then she recalls her grandparents, who have loved her singing ever since she moved in with them after her parents died. They’ve been trying their best to utilize her talents to their full potential, but she always refused due to fear of her bad reputation and what happened to her parents. Then it hit her. She has finally found her motivation to sing…not just to relieve stress but to make her doting family happy. Nothing could make Seishiro feel any more proud…wherever he is. As Kagura passes by, Setsuna tells her she can’t believe how alike their purposes are. Kagura, believing Setsuna eavesdropped on her conversation, gets upset. She then tells her rival she must win the IU and she will not let anyone get in her way. With that, everyone heads back to prepare for the last leg of the tournament.

After Namco Angel gets defeated in the IU quarterfinals, Chihaya reminds everyone to keep an eye on Setsuna. She can tell Setsuna has matured so much since the preliminary matches. No curse or bad reputation is going to stop her now. If anyone can defeat NAZO now, she’s pretty likely to.

One day before the IU finals, Yamato cooks up a plan to destroy ZetaPro and give NAZO a sure victory. Posting anonymously on an online message board, he informs several idol fanatics that “the Siren” is going to perform at Tokyo Dome tomorrow night. “Thousands of attendees are sure to die from hearing her sing! Even the goddesses of NAZO are in danger! We must gather together tomorrow morning and put an end to her before disaster strikes!”

The next day as ZetaPro arrives at Tokyo Dome, they are met with an angry mob. They are after Setsuna and they will stop at nothing to keep her from performing. As Setsuna gets out of the van, the mob almost swarms her, causing her to immediately retreat into the van in shock. Some of the mob even pounds the door, trying to bust it open. Kaito is quick to call security. Officers rush in to break up the violence (although they are not met without slight resistance) and allow the van to pass through and enter the dome. Setsuna was almost scared out of her wits by the mob. She knows they were out for her because of her curse. Kenji and Kaito are worried. If all these dangerous people are let into the stands, there could be trouble. Kaito might not allow Setsuna to perform just to keep her safe. Setsuna believes it’s probably for the best considering her reputation. What if all those people soon die after hearing Setsuna’s song? Kaito informs the performance staff to heavily increase security to prevent further incident.

Later that evening, Kaito double-checks with security to make sure none of the superstitious rioters made it inside. He’s in for good news. Not only has security doubled, but even a group of Setsuna’s biggest fans decided to pitch in and make sure it’s safe for their angel to perform. Setsuna has been cleared to take the stage, but she hasn’t budged from her dressing room. She’s still too scared to go on stage, fearing something might happen to the audience or there are more where those other people came from. Kenji and the other two idols tell her that’s not going to happen. Those who are scared of some old superstitious hocus-pocus are really missing out. There are people out there who love her and support her. Heck, three of them are talking to her this very minute! Plus, there is her doting family, including her parents and grandfather in spirit. Setsuna is so thankful for all the support her partners and producer have given her all these years. She feels like a different person now. She doesn’t care if the people up in the front seats want to take a shot at her. She will sing. It’s her passion. If her parents and Seishiro were still alive today, that’s what they probably would have wanted too.

Yamato appears and is surprised to see Setsuna standing up to NAZO after what happened to her. That mob was meant to either physically prevent her from taking the stage or making her too scared to perform. He wanted to prove she’s nothing more than a devil in human form. Everyone will hate her in fear of her curse. She doesn’t deserve to even exist. His father should have been arrested for making the despicable decision to allow her to become an idol. Oops…he spilled the beans. Kenji is outraged, unable to believe his long-time rival would sink this low. What happened in the past was almost purely coincidental. Setsuna had nothing to do with all those deaths. Besides, there are so many people supporting her…people to enjoy hearing her voice with no fear of some curse.

The chat with NAZO and the final showdown go the same way from here.

ENDING

Setsuna’s output on life has changed dramatically. The reputation of her curse has been completely cleared after her acceptance speech upon winning the IU championship trophy. Everyone who hated and feared her in the past now appreciates and supports her. She now participates in her college’s musical groups and takes private lessons (including some from Chihaya) to further improve her singing. She has become more social too, making several new friends with passions similar to hers. She has transformed into a much happier person (but not overly cheerful like some of the younger idols). If her deceased family were watching over her right now, they’d say they have never been any prouder of her than they are now. Setsuna owes all her thanks to Kenji for helping her make life worth living. She’s proud to call her producer her very first friend.

I really like Setsuna's story, and not just because Eri Kitamura. :P I've always had a soft spot for "kuudere" types, and I loved being able to read through Setsuna's journey to slowly opening up to Kenji and her partners, and watching her conquer her "curse".

Poor Seichiro, though!  :'( I've lost a grandfather myself, so that part really hit home for me. I'm glad Setsuna was able to conquer her sorrow and keep on singing.

Looking forward to more!

Thanks. I thought you'd like it. When I created Setsuna as an anti-social lone wolf character, I really wanted to allow her to make a dramatic transformation. To restore her faith in the people who once feared and hated her.

I'm sorry about your grandfather. :( That was meant to be the tearjerker moment I mentioned earlier...passing on just a second after Setsuna entered the room...right before her eyes. I wanted to add an event that would reignite the curse rumors and thought something like this might be perfect.

I'll do Jun's story next (since Liza requested it).

I've always loved dramatic journeys from anti-social-ness to being more "open". Maybe it's because it reminds me of me? :P
Anyways, great job on Setsuna's story. :3

Thanks for your sympathy. I appreciate it.
It was certainly a tearjerker, "here come the feels" moment, that much is for sure.

Oh, so it was Seishiro...I couldn't remember which one, and either I didn't bother going back to check, or when I did check, I could have sworn it said Seichiro.
Ah well.

You thought die-hard otakus could never become idols? Think again!

Mitsurugi Jun’s Route

Kenji first meets Jun just outside the office playing a video game. Jun looks a bit shocked when she looks up to see Kenji right in front of her. “Whoa! Enemy soldier approaching!” She points at Kenji as if she’s about to shoot him. He is just about ready to defend himself until Jun laughs at his reaction and claims it was just a joke. Kenji laughs along, recalling the president informing him about her sense of humor. As soon as Jun receives the news that the President has appointed Kenji as her producer, her eyes burn with excitement. She has been chosen to represent ZetaPro in the war of the entertainment world! She will become an awesome idol heroine and triumph over evil! I fight for my fans! Fight on, Jun-chan! Never say die, Jun-chan! For great justice, Super Idol Jun-chan will not lose!

Jun does have a bit of a problem. Her debut is in one week and yet she can’t seem to focus or put her game away during important conversations and lessons (mainly during breaks). Jun’s partners think she might be a slacker. How can someone like her become an idol?

While naming their unit, Jun suggests a few silly parody themes ranging from tokusatsu to magical girl.

The day of the debut audition arrives. Jun is stoked and eager to make a big first impression, but Kenji fears she isn’t ready. He even asks her if she wants to spend a bit of time and run through the routine, but she says she’s fine. After she was fooling around during the last two lessons, Kenji and the others aren’t so sure. During the audition, everyone is surprised to see Jun perform brilliantly as if she knows her every part by heart.

After their TV debut, Kenji wonders how Jun could have learned everything in such a short amount of time despite putting almost no effort into last week’s lessons. Jun claims it just came to her. She only had to hear the song and watch the dance once before she knew them by memory. Kenji finds this skill impressive and hard to believe. Normally it takes him a few tries and several hours of practicing to nail a song he wants to play. Still, Jun and her partners are full-fledged idols now. She’ll have to put in more effort if they want to succeed at this level. In other words, less game time, more practice and promotion time. Jun understands and will try her best.

Mitsurugi Jun's Route, cont.

While Jun’s natural talents are so-so at best, her keen memorization abilities allow her to perform well and bolster her fan base. One evening after work, Kenji decides to chat with Jun about her special skills. Jun tells him her memory goes beyond her idol work. At school, she will only need to hear a lecture or read through a part of her textbook once before it’s hammered into her brain. Sometimes, she will attend review lessons just to make sure she’s doing it right. Because of that, her grades are well above average. Outside of school, she can perfectly recite lines from her favorite anime and video games. When advertising for commercials or learning the lyrics for a new song, it just carries over. Kenji’s trust for Jun grows with each successful job. Still, she really likes to play her games a lot during breaks, but she is starting to appear less and less like a slacker to her partners and producer. Jun knows that outside, she doesn’t appear to be idol material at all with her otaku aura, but she can really get the job done, especially when it matters the most.

After Jun’s first festival, Kenji has been noticing a slight flaw in her recent performances. While Jun’s lyrics and dancing have been spot-on, she seems to neglect a few minor yet important parts of the performance such as dynamics (volume), accents, expressions, etc. Once Jun learns a song, she will often fall into a comfort zone and rely on the style she used to learn the lyrics. If this keeps up, people may think Jun’s singing is bland. These “little things” are part of what makes an ordinary performance extraordinary. Kenji suggests another run-through of the sheet music for Jun’s song. As Jun reads through the music, she never noticed all those extra markings and cues before. Kenji informs her that they are all meant to embellish a song and give it color—like where to sing loudly or softly, what notes to emphasize, etc. Jun also has to pay attention to the lyrics. What is the meaning behind them? What kind of vibe do they give off? Jun is surprised, never realizing she was missing so many important parts of her songs. It’s like neglecting all the side quests and hidden treasure to get a 100% completion rate in a game. She thanks Kenji and will make sure she looks over her parts more carefully in the future.

At the Sunny Beach Festival, Jun encounters a familiar face in the form of Maya. The unit is a little concerned, but Jun manages brightens the mood of her unit before taking the stage. Maya dances up a storm and utterly mops the floor with them. She’s a little disappointed with ZetaPro for not putting up much of a challenge. Jun’s eyes sparkle when she realizes this girl really is the dancing sensation Maya Nikaidou. She has heard of her through Internet articles. Jun is a big fan of her dance videos and has learned quite a few moves by watching her. Maya is pretty glad to face an avid fan of hers. She looks forward to her next encounter with Jun once her unit gets a lot better.

Back at the office, the mood is a little restless after realizing their opponent is a member of NAZO. Jun, however, maintains her positive attitude and tries to brighten the mood. Facing Maya reminds her of those unwinnable battles in RPGs. Eventually, the heroes get a lot stronger, face the enemy again, and win. Jun thinks maybe this logic will work the next time they face Maya. Depending on who is in her unit, her partners might not be too happy, thinking the games she plays have gotten to her head and she’s not taking her job seriously. No amount of coaxing in the world from Jun could cheer them up. Jun feels a little uneasy about her partners being angry at her. However, she’s not going to let a little setback like this stop her. If she knows her anime well, all it will take is a little time and teamwork to rebuild their trust.

Sorry if the updates are slow. I've been a little under the weather these past few days.

Mitsurugi Jun's Route, cont.

One day after the unit gets its confidence back, Jun calls Kenji over while she’s browsing the Internet. Apparently, she has gotten so popular that people have been drawing fanart of her. Her favorite is one where she’s dressed like a samurai. What’s funny about it is that one time she saw a thread on an online bulletin board talking about how she could have been descended from a famous samurai who sought a powerful cursed sword long ago. Jun and Kenji laugh. It almost sounds like something out of a video game. Then Jun begins to wonder. To her, her idol career has been very similar to the games she plays. Lessons are like going around the field battling random enemies to level up and boost their skills. Promotions are like quests taken by mercenaries at the local pub—rewards are offered for completing them, mainly in the form of fans and extra money. Festivals are like the boss fights at the end of the level. Kenji can really understand her logic, even though he hasn’t played a lot of video games himself. Still, Jun loves being an idol. Even if it isn’t a game, it’s still a lot of fun for her.

A week after ZetaPro’s showdown with 961Pro or Ryuuguu Komachi, Jun arrives looking a little worried, much to the concern of Kenji, her partners, and the President. She does not even have her games with her today. Earlier in the week, Jun received some startling news from her teachers. Her grades were beginning to slip. Normally she fares very well in her classes, but her homework and exam scores saw a significant drop over the past few months. Her parents, believing she’s paying more attention to her leisurely hobbies than her schoolwork, revoked her video games and all her anime memorabilia until she can bump her grades back up. Jun does not understand. Usually her memorization skills are enough to help her succeed with no problems. Kenji may have found the problem. Jun relies too much on her quick memory rather than her actual talents. Recently she had to juggle time between schoolwork, leisure time, and idol work. With all that stuff to remember, it may have been too much for her memory to take. It has become apparent in her recent performances too. It’s almost as if she’s trying to imitate the routine she saw rather than letting her mind and body do the work. By focusing more on her natural abilities, she can be a much better performer on stage and at school. Jun is not quite sure if she can make the adjustment. Kenji assures her that he and her partners have got her back and will do whatever it takes to help her bring out her true potential. Jun thanks everyone as they head back to work.

The news soon spreads too far. Gossip panels soon release articles claiming Jun is nothing more than an otaku, a talentless hack, and a slacker. She would rather waste time playing video games and watching anime than take lessons and promote her music for her fans’ sake. Some even go as far as saying she’s a delinquent with a long list of truancies. School is nothing more than a waste of time and energy for her. Jun sees the magazine articles and is not happy at all. In the name of justice, she will prove those panels are only telling lies…because justice always prevails!

As soon as the IU preliminary auditions roll around, Jun feels more than ready. Ever since making adjustments to her training approach, Kenji, the other idols, and even Jun herself feel like she has improved quite a bit. As NAZO arrives, Maya approaches Jun. After watching one of her most recent performances, Maya can tell Jun has become a better performer since they last met and is eager to find out what new things she will bring to the table. With ZetaPro and NAZO competing in the same block and with all three of NAZO’s members participating, Jun’s new skills will really be put to the test. Kagura is a little upset that Maya is being so nice to Jun. She’s a total slacker and does not deserve to be an idol! Otaku like her are filthy hikikkomori who waste their time on anime, video games, collectables, and the latest idols with high “moe” factors. Jun, slightly offended by Kagura’s prejudgment, interferes with a loud “OBJECTION!” She’s not like that at all! Sure she does spend a bit of time on video games, but that doesn’t mean she has no life. Kagura then retorts, “Why don’t you say that to your recent report card?” Jun is scared speechless and overdramatically faints like a cornered witness in Phoenix Wright, causing the other competitors to laugh. Kagura is convinced that Jun is not serious about this competition at all. ZetaPro should just drop out while they have the chance. As Kagura and Himeko get set to perform, Maya tells Kenji and Jun to just ignore Kagura’s trash-talk and perform with the best of their ability. After the audition, everyone is shocked to discover ZetaPro passed with second place. Maya catches up with Jun, impressed with ZetaPro’s score. She still has a ways to go before catching up to NAZO, but as long as she keeps honing her talents she’ll really be able to go places. If this keeps up, Maya might be able to find a rival worthy of her skill. Kagura and Himeko still cannot believe someone as unfocused as her could be so popular and score high enough to advance in the IU. Maya looks forward to their next encounter as NAZO exits the venue. Jun is pretty proud of the unit’s performance—not just because they passed but because it really showed just how much Jun was improving. Perhaps she could be a big inspiration for otaku everywhere.

Wow! 2000 views! I never thought my idol project would get this popular so soon! Thanks for all the support guys!

Before I finish off Jun's story, I made a bit of an update. After hearing the news about Leon, I changed Chiyo's VA to Yuu Asakawa (provided the voice for Luka Megurine among others...she was my second choice anyway)

Mitsurugi Jun's Route, conclusion

After the IU finals introduction ceremony, Jun decides to take a break and study a bit for her upcoming exams next week to make sure she has all her notes memorized. She suddenly overhears a conversation between Maya and Yamato. Maya claims that she has seen a significant improvement in Jun’s skill since the IU preliminaries and looks forward to facing her in the final stretch of the tournament. She shouldn’t be underestimated. Yamato is angered by her statement. Being around Jun has made her soft. ZetaPro is the enemy. They hire low-lives like Jun into the idol industry. If Maya really wants to master her dancing styles, she has to have the drive to be the very best…to win by any means necessary…to destroy all enemies. He really doesn’t want to have to fire her after she was able to use her earnings to settle in a nice quiet home away from her old crime-infested slum of a neighborhood full of sorrowful memories. Maya, starting to cry, apologizes and promises him she will win the IU. As she walks away, she suddenly runs into Jun. She’s a little embarrassed to run into her rival with tears in her eyes. Jun says she is glad that Maya accepts Jun’s abilities. She goes on to say that the dancing queen makes an excellent idol too. Both of them have really grown since they became idols. Maya would make a great final boss for Jun. Jokingly, Jun warns Maya to be careful of any “evil red-haired guy wearing a black gi” that might get in her way. Maya cheers up and slightly giggles at Jun’s little joke (despite the fact that she doesn’t get it). She then leaves, not to worry Yamato and the others. Maya says she is proud to call Jun her rival.

On the following week, Jun arrives to work having completed her final exams. According to Jun, they seemed easy after all that studying. During certain questions, she would recall her study time with Kenji and the other two idols. She thanks everyone for all the help before heading off to work. That night, however, Yamato decides to hatch another plan. In order to sabotage ZetaPro and make them easy pickings in the IU finals, Yamato’s spies intercept Jun’s test sheets and replace them with sheets with more than two-thirds of the answers wrong. Jun will wind up failing her classes and getting kicked out of the idol industry.

After the IU semifinals and Kenji’s chat with Ryuuguu Komachi, Jun’s unit returns to Kaito’s van only to discover one of her teachers and her parents standing in front of the van anticipating her arrival. Jun is in for shocking news: due to her utterly poor performance in her final exams, she has failed three of her classes and will be held back. Furthermore, her contract with ZetaPro has been revoked. If she can’t perform in school, she will not perform on stage. Everyone in ZetaPro is devastated, especially Jun. Jun was confident she did very well after finishing them. She recalled every note she took to the point. She put in a lot of time and effort studying for this moment. Unfortunately, it was all for naught according to her teacher. Jun is beyond frustrated, claiming she did not get proper justice. She is later taken home by her parents. Kenji and the other two idols cannot believe it. They do not want to lose Jun after all she has done for the unit. Unfortunately, it cannot be helped now. It looks like the other two idols will have to perform as a duet in the final match against NAZO.

Yamato overhears the conversation and laughs triumphantly. His plan succeeded. NAZO’s victory is all but guaranteed now. Maya, however, cannot believe her producer would sink so low. A dishonest victory like that will not satisfy her in the least. In order to have a fair final showdown, she decides to counterattack. A couple of nights later while Yamato is out of the office, Maya sneaks in and takes Jun’s original exam sheets. She later comes into Jun’s school and delivers the sheets with a note attached to them: “Mitsurugi-san was sabotaged. Her final exams were falsely turned in under her name. Her real final exams are attached to this note. I believe in Mitsurugi-san’s abilities and want justice to be done. Signed, a concerned friend.”

On the day of the IU finals, the President has a surprise for everyone. Jun is back and has been cleared to perform! He got an email from one of her teachers stating her exams were rescored. Thankfully, a couple of her teachers are very familiar with her handwriting (especially the way she writes her name). She scored excellently in her exams and has acquired passing grades in all her classes. Her contract with ZetaPro has been restored! Jun is pumped up to the max and can’t wait to head back to Tokyo Dome.

Later that afternoon, Yamato comes to check in on ZetaPro when he is shocked to discover Jun with them. He thought Jun was kicked out of the idol industry for good because of her bad exam scores. Maya appears. She informs Jun and Kenji that Yamato had his agents sabotage Jun’s test scores. Maya, wishing to face ZetaPro at their full potential, took back Jun’s original exams from under Yamato’s nose and turned them in to Jun’s school for re-grading. Besides, knowing Jun, she really wanted justice to be served. Jun high-fives Maya. “Way to score one for justice!” Kenji is angry at Yamato. He cannot believe his biggest and most respected rival would sink so low. The rest of the tournament goes on from there. Jun will prove once and for all that effort defeats genius! Rise to the challenge of the final boss! Super Idol Jun-chan, battle mode ready!

ENDING

Jun has really become an inspiring figure for otaku everywhere, but she especially has Kenji to thank for helping her grow as a person. Sure, every hero grows and changes significantly during his/her journey, but witnessing it firsthand was special for her. While her memorization skills are still as sharp as ever, she does not rely entirely on it anymore. As it has shown, all that practice and extra effort (or, in her mind, side quests and level grinding) she exerted can really pay off, just like in the video games she plays. “Congratulations! You have achieved the true ending!” Jun then decides to play with Kenji a little. Normally during the true ending, the girl confesses her love for the main guy. After acting a little flirty, even blushing a little, it almost looks as if she’s going to confess to Kenji, but she just laughs and hugs him tightly. Jun later offers Kenji a chance to get together and play some video games. Kenji laughs and accepts her offer.

You're welcome. :3

Yuu Asakawa has a wonderful voice. I'm excited for her.

Anyhow, Jun's story!
Once again, the love and care for your characters shone through. You could see Jun's strengths and weaknesses and watch her develop from a gaming slacker otaku to a gaming IDOL otaku!
I liked Jun. She's cute. And it was really sweet of Maya to look after her!

Yeah. Had to change Chiyo's VA due to Minori Chihara being cast as an official idol, but I like Asakawa's mature singing voice just as well. I think she'd be perfect for someone like Chiyo.

Thanks. I'll be honest, Jun's story took a bit of time to think about. Sure I wanted a die-hard otaku with an acute sense of memory, but I wanted her memorization skills to be challenged so that she doesn't rely on them so much anymore (i.e. to become a better performer and to improve her slipping grades). As for Maya, you know how I said she was the most respectable member of NAZO (compared to the agonizing, overly serious Kagura and the bratty Himeko)? You know how she's kind of like Ryu (from Street Fighter) in a way that she wants to master her dancing skills and travel across Japan to seek out and compete against strong opponents? It shows, especially in routes where Maya is the ZetaPro leader's main rival.

I think I'll go through Miku's route next seeing how she's a pretty important character. I know Liza likes her as well as Jun, so that helps.

However, I do want to work on a couple of other projects as well for my artist page on Facebook. Neo Vision is one of them (including a couple of skits), but I also want to work on some Powerpoint animations involving outside references I make to Pokemon attacks (it's been a habit of mine since Gen III). I'll be able to juggle some time.

I can understand that. The best kinds of characters are dynamic characters. I love seeing them develop. :D You did a great job with it in the end and you're getting me excited, so be proud!
Yeah, that definitely came through in Jun's route. The contrast between Maya being a polite rival and Kagura being...well, Kagura...is easily noticeable.
Not that Kagura's not cool too.
She has her reasons.
I like her.
I like all of them.

If I had a Facebook I'd find you over there and keep up with those because that sounds cool.
But I don't.
Ha. Haha.
...everything needs Facebook nowadays... *sniff*
