Thanks a lot for your continued support, Grace! I'm pretty much on the last leg of the main story now with the IU Finals.

Oh yeah. Speaking of "every possible outcome," I have three options (inspired by SP) to determine what to do if you wind up failing a festival/audition you need to pass to advance the story. After somewhat of a mini-Bad Ending, you can...
  • Go back to the beginning of the current week and take the event over again (this will affect your final score)
  • Go back one week and be forced to undergo Training from Hell (this will slightly affect your final score)
  • Give up entirely and go back to square one. Kenji will be able to keep the EXP he gained in this route, though.

When I like something, I make it known~. :P

Sounds good to me. That way, you have even more options available to you even after losing an audition.

Wait, you have that option in SP...? Whenever I lose an audition, I just LOSE and it's like, game over. I get re-set to the beginning whether I like it or not.

IU Quarterfinals

This is it. The IU Finals are about to begin in Tokyo Dome. After each competitor arrives, they select their placements in the tournament bracket. 1 faces 2, 3 faces 4, and so on. Here are the standings:
  • ZetaPro
  • Jupiter
  • Project Fairy
  • 573Pro
  • 876Pro
  • Ryuuguu Komachi
  • Namco Angel
  • NAZO
Kenji will now pick one of the songs his unit has produced and will use that for the remainder of the competition.

Kenji’s unit gets set to face Jupiter in the first quarterfinal match. Touma is surprised at his opponent—the very young man from that Yokohama mall’s talent competition where Jupiter participated as special guest judges. Jupiter has no intent of holding back. Not only have they gotten a taste of Kenji’s talents, but they are also fueled by their desire for a rematch against 765Pro, particularly Ryuuguu Komachi. Jupiter has gotten a lot better since they left 961Pro, mainly after discovering the power of unity—the very power that 765Pro displayed to them last year. Touma wishes Kenji to come at Jupiter at full strength using the very ability that made him victorious in Yokohama.

Suddenly, Yamato arrives. He barks out at Touma for trying to encourage ZetaPro. He should be treating this “low-class scum” like garbage. They’re Jupiter. They are elites. They have the strength of a great king. They should use it to squash their enemies like the insects they are. Touma interrupts, stating that Jupiter only joined RyuuseiPro so they could have their rematch against 765Pro, not to get involved in Yamato’s little war. That was what Yamato promised him. He wasn’t as blind as he was back when he was with 961Pro. Kenji is shocked to discover Jupiter’s new employer. Yamato wants to prove that money is power—the true power of the upper class. After he discovered that one of the biggest male idol units in Japan became free agents, he was quick to seize the opportunity, waving a truckload of money in their faces and promising them the rematch they’ve been searching for. Touma tells Yamato to back off. If Jupiter does win, they wish to win through their abilities rather than Yamato’s dirty tactics. This is the very reason why they left 961Pro in the first place. Yamato pays no attention and scoffs at Jupiter and ZetaPro. With that, both units take the stage.

FESTIVAL: IU Quarterfinals vs. Jupiter – Alice or Guilty
Jupiter is even tougher than they were against 765Pro last year. Their stats are very balanced and they will likely target your weakest stat. Touma appeals to Vocal, Shouta to Dance, and Hokuto to Visual.
You must win this battle to advance the story! Otherwise, you’ll get a Bad Ending.

Kenji’s idols celebrate their quarterfinal victory! Jupiter is disappointed, but impressed at the same time. Clearly, the stronger idols with the better unity won. Yamato is pissed off and immediately dismisses Jupiter, claiming he will terminate their contracts tomorrow. Touma claims he didn't appreciate Yamato's management of Jupiter, seeing how it reminds him of Kuroi. He actually believes Yamato makes Kuroi a saint by comparison. Jupiter decides to return being freelancers, not wishing to be corrupted by any more selfish production staffs.

Project Fairy easily defeats 573Pro to advance. If Kaori is your leader, 573Pro will still stick around to give her much-needed moral support.

Ryuuguu Komachi defeats 876Pro to advance. Ryo is a little embarrassed to lose to his cousin, though…

NAZO easily defeats Namco Angel to advance. To make matters worse, Yamato decides to pick on Yukiho, claiming that she’s pathetically weak and that she was the cause of Namco Angel’s loss. Makoto tries her best to brush him off, but a broken Yukiho runs off in tears. Later on that afternoon, 765Pro and ZetaPro come along to comfort Yukiho. It wasn’t her fault. Even “Broducer” says that was the best performance he had seen from them this year. It was incredible. NAZO just fared better with the judges. Yukiho feels a bit better, but is still upset that 765Pro’s main unit couldn’t take home the IU championship this year. Kenji’s anger towards Yamato is rising. He once respected his rival, but his recent actions are just too much. Later that evening, the semifinal matches begin…

IU Semifinals

Both semifinal matches begin around later that evening. Kenji’s next opponent is Project Fairy. Fueled by a desire to face their biggest rivals (Ryuuguu Komachi) in the finals, they are not willing to lose. Miki thinks they can easily breeze by Kenji, but Takane warns her not to underestimate her opponents. She seems to sense an incredibly powerful aura in Kenji and his idols. Kotori is a little concerned about Takane’s suspicions, but she will have to go all out in order to prove her worth to Ritsuko. Both units take the stage.

FESTIVAL: IU Semifinals vs. Project Fairy – Overmaster
Be careful! Your memory level carries over from your match with Jupiter, so try not to waste too many Memory Appeals beforehand. Much like Jupiter, Project Fairy is a very strong and balanced unit who will likely attack your weakest stat. Vocal appeals might be your best option here, as Takane’s Vocal isn’t as strong as Hibiki’s Dance or Miki’s Visual. Try switching up your appeals to take them by surprise.
You must win this battle to advance in the story! Otherwise you’ll get a Bad Ending.

Kenji’s unit has advanced to the finals! While Takane did give it her all, she is not too surprised about her loss, almost as if she predicted the outcome. Miki doesn’t mind either…now she can finally spend some quality time with her honey! Kotori is distraught, believing she just embarrassed herself. She’ll never be as good as Ritsuko. Kenji disagrees with her statement. Look at the popularity and success Project Fairy has attained under her management despite her lack of experience. Kotori makes an outstanding producer. Who knows, maybe Project Fairy might win next year.

Suddenly, Ritsuko comes along. Turns out Ryuuguu Komachi also lost, so they could not have their desired showdown after all. Iori is cheesed off. A blowout loss is one thing, but the way Yamato mocked Ryuuguu Komachi and the way Himeko personally mocked her really added fuel to the fire. According to Iori, Yamato claimed Ryuuguu Komachi (and all of 765Pro for that matter) is low-class and overrated. They only achieved success because their fans are just a bunch of idiot commoners who are drawn by a high “moe” factor rather than real talent. The time had come for them to step down and make way for the elites who are destined to wear the crown. Himeko also mocks Iori, claiming that a so-called princess becomes a pauper in the face of a goddess like her.

Everyone heads out for the night. The finals will be held at Tokyo Dome tomorrow night.

Just before ZetaPro heads back for the van, Iori interrupts them. She demands Kenji to promise her to crush NAZO. Why? Just as Ryuuguu Komachi left the dome, Yamato wanted to make her an offer. He has heard about the Minase family’s legacy. He claimed Iori has that hidden potential that only elites like the two of them possess. The reason Ryuuguu Komachi lost to NAZO was because Iori’s true potential as an idol was being held back by the “talentless low-lives” Ami and Azusa. Yamato then offered Iori an invitation to abandon her unit and join NAZO instead. Under his management, he could help Iori transform from princess to goddess. She could gain fame and fortune beyond her wildest dreams. People would bow down to her like the princess she is. Iori was offended by his offer and blew him off. She is very good friends with Ami, Azusa, and Ritsuko and wouldn’t have been so successful had it not been for their lasting friendship. Yamato shrugged, claiming Iori will always lose if she continues to go down this path. Perhaps she will change her mind once she sees NAZO completely destroy Kenji’s unit in the finals.

Ritsuko, Ami, and Azusa soon catch up with Iori. Ritsuko apologizes for the trouble Iori has caused Kenji, but Kenji can understand how she feels. He, too, would pick friends over money and fame any day of the week. Ritsuko then has a pretty interesting theory. Kodou. Ryuuzaki. The tiger and the dragon…two eternal rivals. It’s almost as if Kenji and Yamato were destined to fight each other. Ryuuguu Komachi wishes ZetaPro lots of luck against RyuuseiPro—they are going to need it. Kenji’s not afraid. He and his idols have the power of unity. Unity…Ritsuko wonders…and believes maybe that might be the key to defeat NAZO. Everyone heads back to their respective offices for the night.

Wow, Yamato is a BASTARD! I really just wanna punch him in the schnozz! >_<!

Anyway, I really like Iori's development in the story and Ritsuko's theory on the Dragon and the Tiger does seem interesting, though when I hear about those two, I always think of Art of Fighting. :p

IU Finals - The Decisive Grand Finale

The stage is set. The final match to decide the IU champion has arrived. Two long-time evenly-matched rivals go head-to-head in the idol battle of the century.

To make sure NAZO wins, Yamato pulls out all the stops—messing with Kenji and his unit’s leader in the worst way possible (i.e. takes and breaks Yoshino’s glasses as she’s getting ready; sends a superstitious angry mob after Setsuna; publicizes Hinata’s ADHD; greases the stage floor, causing Mai to trip up and sprain her ankle; sends a group of anti-Brazilian immigration activists after Nagisa; turn up the stage’s heat so Asuka would collapse from heatstroke; publicizes Kaori’s photoshoots from the time she was with 573Pro; threatens to destroy Kotone’s tea house; exposes Chiyo’s relationship with Takuma, etc.)

As Kenji’s unit gets ready to perform, Kenji notices his leader is either missing or out of commission. Kenji talks with her to see what’s going on. After a successful chat, the leader gains the motivation to come back to the stage (a better result will give your 25 memories, thus maximizing your memory level).

Inside the dome, Kenji figures out what’s going on. He believes Yamato has been using dirty tactics in an attempt to destroy him and ZetaPro. Yamato is surprised Kenji figured it out. All those gossip panels, paparazzi photographers, spies, radio stations, judges, etc. were paid by him. Oh, and that fire incident at the Harvest Moon Festival? He planned it…paid the tech crew to pull it off. Kenji is shocked. Why? Why would a rival he had respected for so long stoop so low? Yamato claims Kenji had been a thorn in his side for the longest time. He’s of the elite. He’s supposed to be the best by default. Why is a mere commoner able to match wits with him every time? Why did his father replace him for his biggest rival? He wanted to prove once and for all that he is truly superior over Kenji. So he gathered the most talented idols he could in order to destroy his unit and get back at his foolish father.

Kenji cannot believe it. Yamato had all this talent and yet he wastes it in order to flaunt his status and wealth, lie, cheat, and ruin the image of the middle class. Kenji demands that Yamato cut out his shenanigans and face him fairly. Otherwise, he will expose his actions to the public, including his own father. Yamato claims that will not work as he has too much of an influence on the outside world. Suddenly, NAZO appears. They, too, are dissatisfied with Yamato’s dishonest actions. It was their combined talents that made them a national sensation to begin with. If people discover that he helped them cheat their way to the top, people might think that all that talent was a lie. If he does want to prove their superiority, prove it fairly. Yamato is left with no choice but to agree to his idols’ standards, but on one condition…a wager. If Yamato wins, Kenji must declare him his superior and give up his life of music forever. But if Kenji wins, Yamato will step down as a producer and return home. Yamato claims that will never happen, though, as he’s got one more trick up his sleeve. Yamato’s prayers start to bring out NAZO’s full potential as performers. Never before has NAZO felt this kind of power. Kenji begins to pray himself. He and his idols begin to hear each other’s thoughts. They feel as though they can work together in perfect harmony. This is the power of unity. After each idol preaches the power of unity with each NAZO idol…765Pro, Jupiter, and President Ryuuzaki (who also decided to come along to watch) can feel it too. According to them, NAZO may have met their match. It will all come down to who performs better at tonight’s competition. Now Yamato and Kenji will prove which one is superior once and for all. After one final cheer, ZetaPro’s idols step forward for perhaps the biggest performance of their lives…

FESTIVAL: IU Finals vs. NAZO – God knows…
This will be your most difficult challenge yet. Much like Kenji’s last two opponents, NAZO has strong, balanced stats and appeal to your weakest stat. To make matters worse, their abilities have been given an even bigger boost from Yamato. You will need some strong Support Ranks between your idols if you want to be able to defend their appeals. Luckily, that last conversation Kenji had with the leader will (hopefully) fill your memory level to the maximum, which helps big time because NAZO loves to spam Memory Appeals. Build a good combo of appeals to get the most points. If your Support Rank is high enough, you can Double or even Triple Appeal to get a leg up on NAZO. In the end, big stats, an image song (to further boost your idol’s stats), stronger Memory Appeals, more Burst Appeal opportunities, and especially high Support Ranks will be the key to victory.
This is the final showdown. No matter what the outcome, the story is over. Win, and you get at least the Normal Ending, maybe even better. Lose, and you get the Absolute Worst Ending.

This result is for the Normal/Good/True Ending
The performance is done. The judges’ decisions have been made. After tallying both scores…

ZetaPro is victorious! They go up on stage to receive the IU championship trophy. After a little speech, they give an encore performance—most likely the leader’s image song.

Yamato is flabbergasted. As an elite, he was supposed to be fated to win. He never made mistakes raising his idols. It’s so humiliating to lose to a low-class wretch.

Suddenly, President Ryuuzaki arrives at the stage below. He congratulates ZetaPro on a job well done. They have all grown up so much since forming their unit. He then turns to Yamato, disappointed. The main reason why he lost is because he neglected to bond with his idols. Power, skill, and money aren’t everything. Without trust, love, and unity, he will never make a good producer. Yamato agrees to his part of the deal and goes home with his father. President Ryuuzaki then gives Kenji his final producer analysis.

If you get the Normal Ending, everyone heads home. Kenji then gets a text message from his current leader, thanking him for everything. Defeat NAZO in the final round, but do any of the following: change leaders during your campaign OR not play through enough special events involving your leader OR score less than 70% on your producer analysis.

If you get the Good Ending, Kenji and the idols go outside and reminisce on their coming-of-age journey. The idols thank Kenji for all his support as they give him a tearful goodbye. Everyone heads home. Kenji then gets a text message from the leader, thanking him for everything. Defeat NAZO in the final round, produce your leader the whole way through, go through all special events involving your leader, and score at least 70% on your producer analysis.

If you get the True Ending, after everyone heads back to the office, the unit’s leader has a one-on-one chat with Kenji. This journey has helped her fulfill her dreams and then some. Some girls might even confess their love for Kenji! Defeat NAZO in the final round, produce your leader the whole way through, go through all special events involving your leader, have everyone in the unit at Support Rank A, and score at least 80% on your producer analysis.

A great conclusion to a great story! I'm surprised that nobody at least tried to call the cops on Yamato for his dirty tricks, ESPECIALLY the ones you described before the IU Finals. (Superstitious angry mobs? Racist activists? Causing a minor to get heatstroke? DESTROYING TEA HOUSES!? HE MUST BE HUNG!!!) I'm also curious as to how the Absolute Worst Ending will play out. Anyway, great job as always, Zeta!

Now that the main story is done, time for updates! I added a couple more songs to the list and updated Megumi's and Momoko's profiles to give them a bit more of a backstory.

Also, stay tuned for profiles on 573Pro's idols: Erisa Umino, Yoshiko Momoyama, Rika Shiraishi, and Koneko Hiwatari.

Sorry about the late reply, MetalPredat0r. Thanks for the support!

You know what, that's exactly the reaction I've been looking for when I created Yamato. I wanted to make him evil (or just a total psychopath) to the point where Kuroi is pretty much a saint by comparison. As for calling the cops, I've heard a few people say that about Kuroi, mainly from what he's done in the anime.

Not just any tea house, mind you, but a tea house owned by her mother and grandmother. Promoting it was one of Kotone's main reasons for becoming an idol in the first place. Trust me...not a very good idea to mess with a family-owned company.

If you thought Yamato's actions were worth an arrest now, wait until you hear about Miku's story, inspired by recent events involving a real-life idol. Over the course of Miku's career, she has been harassed and threatened by a stalker on the Internet (who is apparently aware of her past failures), causing the normally-happy girl with recently-blooming talents to live in a state of fear and causing Kenji to decrease her involvement in promotions and performances (much to her chagrin). Once the IU finals come around, the stalker promises to attend her concerts in order to meet her in person. Well...let's just say Yamato thought he'd help fulfill the desires of a "dedicated fan."

Well.....that's just mean....  :(

I always interpreted Kuroi as being so wealthy that he is able to simply bribe everybody to be on his side. Meaning he can easily just offer the police a large amount of money so that they can let him off scott-free. It sounds horrible, but its the most believable interpretation that I could think of.

Same goes for Yamato. Quite a bit of NAZO's success came through bribes (i.e. radio stations to play their music often, TV stations to advertise their albums via commercials, "hush money" to keep his actions from being leaked to authorities, etc.). Remember how Yashiro (the President) made a truckload of money from working as a producer? He's just the sad result of how money and power corrupt.

Based off games from a rival company! Introducing 573Pro's idols! (that's pronounced KoNaMi)

Umino Erisa (海野絵里沙, age 17) The vocal specialist of 573Pro. A sweet and calm girl originally from Hiroshima. With a beautiful singing voice and an adoration of the ocean, some people believe she could actually be a mermaid (mainly because she tends to sing towards the ocean after dark). While her professional vocal training is a bit limited, she taught the other girls how to utilize their voice to the fullest. Erisa often wears ocean-themed outfits on stage to correspond with her mermaid theme.
Preferred VA: Misato Fukuen
Image song: Shinkai Shoujou (Vocaloid)

Note: Erisa is a play on Eliza, the name of the mermaid boss from Gokujyou Parodius.

Shiraishi Rika (白石莉花, age 16) The dance specialist of 573Pro. A happy-go-lucky girl who returned to Japan one year ago after studying abroad in Las Vegas for three years. While her dance training is somewhat limited, she learned a few tricks from watching showgirls perform. She also owns a pet eagle named Zabu who acts as her messenger. Rika often prefers performing with lots of colorful flashing lights on stage. She's often the one to help Kaori calm down after stressing out.
Preferred VA: Yui Sakakibara
Image song: Miracle Paint (Vocaloid)

Rika is named and modeled after Rika Chichibinta, the reoccurring Vegas showgirl from the Parodius games. Zabu is named after Eagle Sabu, the eagle boss from Parodius Da who appears following Rika's namesake character.

Momoyama Yoshiko (桃山淑子, age 19) The visual specialist of 573Pro. This voluptuous vixen has a passion for moai. She also has a bit of a sadistic side and enjoys teasing her fans. She was often paired with Kaori in providing 573Pro's sex appeal. She also acts as a big sister to Kaori, though she will torture her from time to time just for a laugh. Yoshiko tends to wear a lot of makeup, though she can sometimes overdo it.
Preferred VA: Megumi Toyoguchi
Image song: Sweet Devil (Vocaloid)

Note: Yoshiko is named and modeled after Parodius's pink moai boss of the same name.

Hiwatari Koneko (日渡小猫, age 14) The newest and youngest 573Pro idol who replaced Kaori after her mother dragged her out of the company. She's very hyperactive and loves cats to the point where she will even act like a cat. Her love for sardines is pretty much on par with Miki's love of onigiri. Every time she sees a mouse, even on stage, she just has to chase it! She has a tendency to say "nya" at least once in every sentence. Yeah...she is that crazy.
Preferred VA: Sawa Ishige
Image song: Nekomimi Switch (Vocaloid)

Note: Those "whiskers" are really just face paint.
Note: Koneko is based off the reoccurring cat vehicles in the Parodius games. Koneko's inspiration, however, came from the Otomedius Excellent character Neko Sancho, who is essentially a parody of said cat vehicles. So, Koneko is basically a parody of a parody.

I like this group, especially Rika and Yoshiko. They're nice characters, even though it sounds like Yoshiko can be a bit of a jerk sometimes. Ahahaha...
Still. I've never played Parodius so I'm not familiar with the inspiration behind the characters, but they're very interesting and I like their character designs.

Check back a couple of posts for an image update on Erisa. I was a little dissatisfied with how Erisa's hair turned out before, so I decided to grow it out in order to make her look a little more like her namesake character. Oh, and by the way, her combination skirt/bikini bottom was made from the same material as the Taiyou no Jealousy outfit from Shiny TV (though it uses more green than purple). The top is designed like a pair of scallop shells.

Thanks! I didn't give them much development, though, as they are mainly NPCs/rivals you can square off with in festivals. The Parodius games are light-hearted and insane parodies of Konami(hence their production name)'s classic shoot-em-up Gradius. In fact, some of Kaori's communication events make references to Konami games (i.e. when she goes into dance lessons, she always seems to vision arrows flying up from the ground...or a time when she has a mall performance during a card game tournament...or a time when she meets Kenji underneath a tree at her school that is said to grant wishes (a reference to Tokimeki Memorial)).

No problem! Even if you didn't give them much backstory, they're still enjoyable characters.
Haha, I don't play Konami games nearly as much as I ought to. But maybe I'll pick up Gradius or Parodius to get a bit more familiar with the characters' inspirations.
