THE iDOLM@STER > THE iDOLM@STER Platinum Stars

Pre-release thread: THE iDOLM@STER: Platinum Stars

Cael K.:
Far as I can tell, each Im@s game has no continuity with any other game. It'll probably be the same for this one, too.

Rin:
Hm, okay. I was wondering how that was with PS still being second vision and all, but if you think they have nothing to do with each other, well alright. So it'd be slightly-altered then.

mariokirby:
Cael is right.  Each game, manga, animes, certain dramas, etc. have nothing to do with each other.  So, Platinum Stars (just like Idolm@ster 1 and One for All) takes place in a different continuity than Idolm@ster 2 where there is no Ryuguu Komachi.

There are a few exceptions like the anime and Movie taking place in the same universe.

In most iteration of 765pro, they start off as rookies idols who work their way up to top idol.  But, the setup and perspective in each is slightly altered.

The foundation in all of the iterations is usually the same with the characters and their general story, personality, and character interactions.  However, each iteration usually has a different producer, different rivals, slightly altered idol story, slightly different character interactions, etc.

It's basically the story of 765pro that gets retold.

Second vision (one way to put it) was mainly a 765pro reset (adding new members, age changes, hair styles, etc).  So, it set a new foundation for future iterations.

Naryoril:
Even within second vision we already had 3 universes:
Dearly Stars, Im@s 2 and one for all, Ritsuko was only once a producer

MetalPredat0r:
Right, as said previously, Platinum Stars is just another reset of the story.

I'm personally not a fan of this anymore. I get it's the point of the series to raise your idols to the top, but it also means they've been telling the exact same story for ten years with the same characters. Chihaya's dead brother and warming up to people, Yukiho being scared and trying to get away from that, Azusa trying to find love, etc. They may be told slightly differently with different events, but the overall plot is the same every single time.

I feel at some point there's gotta be a brand new generation of 765 idols with the originals appearing older and as mentors to the newbies. That way, it can give something fresh and new to the story while still keeping the original girls for fanservice.
