It doesn't actually matter if you live in the U.S.
All that matters is that you can receive the phone call.
I'd test it out right now, but I don't have much time at the moment.
It also seems that I can't seem to access my settings or my page on gree site,
which you need to in order to change your country- not sure if vpn bypasses this.
It seems like it's gotten a bit harder, I'll dig in a little later to see.

After doing a bit of digging I found a problem-there isn't a way to switch your country anymore (it only has japan as the country)
I believe this coincides with the English version of the gree site and app being shut down a few months ago.
Gree also blocks accessing your profile and settings if you don't have a Japanese IP.
So I believe my former method is invalid now- I don't think it's possible to confirm your account anymore.

yeah it's very irritating ;3; can't accses my main as i had a jp and a en and the app is even looged on my en nya, tried my normal vpn which is tsunagarumon but have no been able to get it to work
