Well I'm not a veteran fan but even knowing what little I know about the IMAS universe, it's still easy to see why Miki is the most popular idol. Here's a short list from someone with only casual knowledge:

1. She's absolutely glamorous, gorgeous and beautiful yet still remains ultra-cute. Not an easy double-power (glamor + cute) to accomplish!
2. Her figure is a certain kind of paradigm, in other words, her BWH are pretty much a manifestation of a kind of perfection.
3. She refers to herself in the third person in a very refined and skillful manner (props to seiyuu for executing it so well), which is very cute.
4. She's ditzy in the most lovable way.
5. Fans just burn with the desire to protect such a wonderful girl, kind of like a beautiful flower that's separate from the horrible realities of the world, wanting to protect such a miracle is after all a natural, sensible, and productive impulse to have.
6. She does well in school, both brains and beauty! If you added wisdom to that mix you would have a flawless character, but that would be too much...
7. She has two forms (original and awakened) each with their own lovable personality differences, so more fans.
8. She's athletic.
9. She comes from a well-off family, but is not cursed with an annoying demeanor or unmerited sense of entitlement; she's stylish without being pretentious: an unusual and praiseworthy upbringing!
10. She's 金髪 kinpatsu (blonde), so she's got that exotic gaijin charm, but she's still 100% Japanese! So there's all the allure of the "foreign", but none of the complications of culture-language barrier, etc.

But she's lazy and in blonde-mode rarely puts effort into anything and kind of takes it for granted that she will be top idol. I personally feel Miki never crosses the line from "cute-lazy" to "annoying-useless-lazy", but I think some people might have that kind of reaction.

She also breaks so many guys' hearts! I know she doesn't really have any choice because so many confess to her, but nevertheless that kind of outcome is reprehensible, maybe she could just let it be known that she's focusing on her career/idol ambitions at the moment and not interested in a relationship and make sure it's a decisive and conclusive non-negotiable way in which it is expressed? Instead she seems to just knock them down one after another. 

Also, like any other sheltered person, her blonde-mode is not likely to be wise, mature, or well-grounded, in other words, that seems to me at least to be a huge part of being "too perfect" is something like having all the answers! And that's definitely not Miki!

I don't feel like Miki is an unrealistic girl, there's probably a handful of girls like her in the real world. Literally. You could probably count them on one hand, but they almost certainly do exist. (Allmyjealousyandrage@theirfuturehusbands ) They're the kind of girls that who merit no less than the most honorable, devoted, capable, intelligent, and wealthiest of Kings, or a commoner who surpasses the material worth of nobility or governance by being a living paragon of the finest heart and noblest soul.

Actually I can't say I'm aware of any person living on this world at the moment who fulfills such a standard. Unfortunately the wonderful Miki's of the world will have to settle for less. Unless they marry one another. And have perfect children by laboratory gene-combination which allows same-sex couples to have kin children. Which would be Godly.  Miki married to Miki!



Anyway, that's just my take on it. I can't think of any other reasons at the moment why Miki would be unlikeable in any way.

I also just realized I'm like Idol_Hearts, but about Haruka, I'm not too sure why she's so top-tier popular, although the forumers here provided some solid reasoning for her strong popularity... but almost #1? With Iori, Yayoi, Chihaya, Makoto and Azusa in the same contest? ... No me comprende

Yeah, now that I think of it, she is [usually] not annoying.
