I was thinking more along the lines of "how does this work logically?" But then, Idolmaster doesn't, necessarily, work on logic...

Couldn't get it through my head last night as well. I think it's just more of appealing to fetishes than anything. (Also, not everyone is knowledgeable about them in Japan, specially since less than 10% of their population are Christians)
