Yeah, the way most sites do this is pretty standard.
Basically, when your browser requests access to a site, it sends a string along with the request telling the server what it is. What browser you're using, what type of device you're using, and all that. So, say I'm using Chrome on my PC. Chrome will send off a bunch of plaintext saying that the browser I'm using is Chrome, and that I'm running Windows. If I were on an Android phone, it would say I was using an Android to access the site. We call these strings user agents, and they're actually made to be human-readable. There are actually quite a few of these floating around, but they usually share the same form. Google for user agent or something, there's more information about this online for those of you so inclined. Unfortunately, this places the burden of making websites for multiple devices and browsers square on the shoulders of the webmaster. Blech.
