According to some backstory, Ai is not an only child. A few years earlier before Mai was preggers on Ai, she had her first child. However, due to her very young age and her rising reputation as an idol, Mai had to give up her first child and sent her to an orphanage.
Some years later, Mai had an unexpected reunion with her first child at a park. However, Mai did not recognize this girl as her daughter, nor did the young girl recognize her former mother. Regardless, Mai was very kind to the girl, since the young girl was alone in the park with no friends. At the time, Mai occasionally went to the park to teach children how to sing, and got this young girl to come along with her. This sparked something in the girl, and she too, would eventually aspire to be an idol...
Eventually, when Ai was to become an idol, she would get help from a very popular and successful idol who was older than her... her older sister, Haruka Amami.
Yep, that's right.
Haruka is Ai's long-lost older sister. Shocking, wha?
