I agree, I too consider the anime separate, if not a slightly alternate universe all together. I'd definitely like to see more of Shinkan Shoujo as well. iM@S 3 rivals?

新幹少女 - Shinkan Shoujo

The "shinkan" part comes from shikansen (新幹線), which is a bullet train.  This is why some fansubs have translated their name as "Bullet speed girls."  So they're lightning fast and speeding their way into your hearts?  :P

Take it apart further, and the first kanji alone "shin" (新) means "new," so they could be seen as a new idol unit?  But I don't see any relevant meaning to the "kan" character by itself.  (And to cover all our bases, shoujo means girl.)

I think "shinkan" by itself isn't a word, though.
