The iDOLM@STER Anime Ep: 03 discussion

Talk about the worst character development ever, huh?

I missed old Yukiho this much throughout that whole episode. Newkiho's voice was just the most irritating sound I've heard this week. (I've spent 6 hours on a plane this week by the way.)
Well, at least there was Miki. She always makes everything better.

This could have been a great episode, it really could have! No, really! I'm not lying! Here, let me tell you how:
1. Could have explained Yukiho's quirks.
2. Could have talked about Yukiho's past.
3. Could have explained Yukiho's fears.

Ep. 2 had a little Iori back story. Sure, it was probably only a sentence or two, and it actually wasn't needed at all for that episode's plot, but at least it was there. This one was basically begging for an explanation as to why Yukiho is such a burden to everyone. (Let's not kid ourselves here. You too would find working with someone like this annoying.) And what did we get? The most awkward transition from shy and fearful to headstrong and motivated I have ever seen ever. A pinky promise. Really.

I'm also not liking how the show just has to show every single idol all the time, as if fearing the wrath of any particular idol's fans. I could go without seeing certain idols a whole episode, honest. Just use that extra time for more meaningful scenes. Please~!

Discuss Ep. 3 here.

Edit: Forgot to rate!

5/10.

I could see lots of funny faces from this episode. (And exceptional Miki shots.)

As I've said in the other thread.
Each time I listen to ALRIGHT*, I tear up.  Mainly because it's the last original solo song Yurishii recorded as Yukiho.  Hearing it in the anime sung by Azumin just hurt a bit more...

I liked this episode, but only because of my Yukiho bias.

I really enjoyed this episode. Poor Yukiho, she really can't handle dogs and men by herself. D:

But I was really touched by how she was able to gain the courage to stand out in front of the crowd in front of men after the produce gave her some courage.

So overall I give this episode an 8/10.

I actually have to agree with almost everything that Scotty said.

This episode just gave me more of a reason not to like Yukiho. Maybe it's because of my irritation with overly-shy and crybaby characters.

Not only that, but this episode was so predictable/cliche, I literally knew the ending before it actually happened. The only part of this episode that I liked/giggled at was the Iori-Cutting-Onions scene. The rest IMO? Boring.

I give this episode a 2/10.

I was kind of annoyed at how extreme Yukiho's fear was. But, I got over it at the end with her performance.
Also, I think I'm starting to like Miki more. Sleep effing everywhere ftw?!

And...

Damn oldies trying to take Azu-san! D:

Oh yeah, I rate 6/10 out of sincerity. Could've been better.

Also, "Umattemasu" relevantly means to dig a hole, ne?.. I searched it after posting it ambiguously on FB and I got back "a girl longing for someone" or something -_-; and quickly deleted it.

^THIS.  ALL OF THIS.

This episode really painted Yukiho out as a rape victim or something.  Which I thought it was interesting she was more afraid of the dog then the MALE children, even when they appeared again.  However any of the adult males she just flipped her lid about.  Especially her hallucinations of them being demons, it just had some creepy undertones that something really bad happened to her.  With a fear painted that strong, I have no idea how she was able to get over it that fast.  I could have understood if maybe the Tea Haruka & Makoto gave her was spiked with liquor, making her open up a bit...that would have been a more entertaining conclusion no offense.

With Yukiho aside, a very confusing episode in how it was structured.  The last episode focused on the loli-trio quite well, and in this episode it seemed like they were trying to focus on Makoto, Haruka, and Yukiho as a whole.  However it felt like Iori and the twins kept stealing scenes throughout the whole show.  Also I'm not sure why they were upset about not having the right clothes, when in the last episode, the moral seemed to be "It's not what you wear, but what's on the inside."

I'm also a bit worried about the formula they seem to be following.  It reminds me of Doki Doki School Hours in how each episode would revolve around an event, and each character in the giant cast would act out their quirks in response to that event.  Episode 2 and 3 seemed to follow that formula, and the preview for episode 4 seems to say the same.  Not that it's a bad way to handle all these characters, it's just we're not going to get much depth in this format.  Shame they didn't keep the format of the first episode and just swap the POV amongst the idols each episode.

Overall episode 3 was a very average anime episode sadly...

Because they forgot the correct stage clothes. That's it. They probably wanted them to wear the concert clothing they'd bought. It's not exactly the same, but I wouldn't want to come to a choir concert not wearing the right outfit (although wearing informal clothing here really worked out and was appropriate enough anyway).

I wanted to punch Yukiho so many times in the face this time. Like you guys were kind of getting at, unless she had a traumatic past, there's no reason she should have these phobias. Although I really liked when she sang ALRIGHT.

I enjoyed the episode and Yukiho amused me for a while, but I did find myself going "Oh for God's sake Yukiho" when she nutted up then SUDDENLY. A TINY DACHSHUND IN THE CROWD. That's about when she hit annoying for me, but she nutted up again soon after so it was okay I guess.

Alright* caught me off guard and I fully expected a shitstorm over Azumin singing it but it looks like the majority were kind of okay with it.

Also sweet jesus my ears when they started screaming. I actually had to pull my headset away from my ear when all three screamed.

They really should have traded the dachshund for a bulldog or something.

Shows how popular they are. The producer quickly corrected him.

This wouldn't have happened had it been 961.

I think they're eventually going to go into every single girl backstory, but since the show is 25 episodes long they don't really need to do it before the second half. I think it's super obvious how the show is going to progress: first half introduce the girls and make 765 a popular company; second half goes into the girls' backstories and, now that 765 is already established and not completely irrelevant, introduces their rivalry with 876 and probably between the girls themselves.

I think episode 4 has tons of potential if it is about what I think it is: Chihaya and the rest of the idols in one of those assholish Japanese shows in which they bully and make fun of aspiring idols/artists/celebrities-to-be.

I didn't find the episode so bad, I also didn't find Yukiho's voice that annoying but I have a higher tolerance for high pitch voice (thanks to my little sisters).

I was expecting Yukiho shrieking and crying the whole episode but this really wasn't that bad. But yeah I agree with the general consensus, the episode took her fear to ridiculous levels. It's one thing to be scared of men, it's another thing to scream and sprint in the other direction when you see a guy [especially when you're in a larger group of friends, like when they arrived]. Plus it gives some uncomfortable undertones that other people have mentioned.

Random thoughts:

The animation was REALLY fluid this episode, I noticed. It looked like a movie.

I was really disappointed when they were in the van and Shiny Smile's intro played, then... Karaoke track. I remember watching it and going "maybe the vocals will come in later" but nope.

All in all I'd give it a 6/10. It didn't have any major flaws other than Yukiho being a spazz, but she's the main girl of the episode.  But despite that it was pretty enjoyable and I really have been looking forward to seeing them perform on stage.

I think episode 4 has tons of potential if it is about what I think it is: Chihaya and the rest of the idols in one of those assholish Japanese shows in which they bully and make fun of aspiring idols/artists/celebrities-to-be.
Looking forward to Chihaya totally not taking/being affected by that crap and at the end of the episode totally giving them hell for taking music so lightly.
