The iDOLM@STER Anime Ep: 01 discussion

The hoops I had to jump through to watch this episode!

Right then, so how was that for a first episode, huh? Discussion and opinions on the first episode go here!

I honestly found it a bit of a mess! In my opinion, a show with this many characters could only open in one of two ways. Either intro all the characters in one go, or slowly intro a couple every episode. I'm sure you can tell which option was taken.

A good third or so of th episode was spent introducing each idol, and then perhaps the rest of the episode went on interviewing each one. I'm pretty sure it could have worked a little better if we had gone straight into the interviews. Instead, I saw a jumbled, messy scenario that packed in all of the idols as if the show were to end any minute as soon as it started. What's the rush? There's plenty of episodes.

As a fan, it was alright. Nice nods to little character quirks here and there. If I weren't a fan, and this were my first time seeing anything imas, then this would have come off a bit cheesy.

Animation was....well. I don't know. Aything in the foreground looks nice. Vibrant colors all around, which is great, just try not to pay too much attention to the background, it looks....well. I don't know. Animations were sorta fluid. But I couldn't really tell, I had to watch this from my iPad, which is streaming from my pc.

So yeah, this is exactly what I envisioned the show to be. Except for the producer reveal. That was handled pretty well. I give it a 7/10!

The website I watched the subbed version on had a stream of comments pretty much going "wtf this is lame" and it made me realise that unless you were a pre-existing fan half of it wouldn't even begin to make sense.

It is, afaik, made for fans primarily, but if they want to grab new fans I guess they'll probably have to hope they hang around to watch the next episode.

I liked the format personally, I found it really interesting and I'm not sure if I'd sad it won't be going on for some more episodes, but I get why. I lol'd a fair few times but it was at references that probably wouldn't make sense. Also Haruka nutting the train door;lsdfk;sa

I think, if you watched it without knowing anything beforehand, Makoto the reverse trap flailing around at "cockroach" probably wouldn't make sense, nor Yukiho trying to dig her way out of the kitchen and freaking out at the camera.

I love the expressions and everything, but the tl;dr is it makes no sense if you don't know these things and it pretty much as-is limits it to fans only and alienates anyone else

though as a fan i love it sd;flalskgj

Agree that it only makes sense to fans.
Non fans would find none of the character's personality quirks as funny.

I like the animation style because the characters seem pretty bright and cheery, a lot like their game character, and they're always wearing cute clothes.
Some parts of the animation were a little slow...maybe it was just the version I was watching, but it seemed kind of low frame rate.

I look forward to seeing more, but by no rate do I think this is the next big popular anime, more like a homage to the fans and a little more indepth look at 765 productions.

Trees and hedges in front of office not in game, capital "I" in "THE iDOLM@STER", people didn't do their homework. Horrible animu.

Eh? They used a capital I? That's a really huge miss!

I loved the first episode! It was entertaining and nothing felt wrong about the format or the content of the episode. I got a friend of mine who also like anime, but knows nothing about Idolm@ster, to watch it and he liked it. (: He said it was rather refreshing in a way and I agree. In my opinion, an anime fan who's never heard of Idolm@ster can watch this and enjoy it.

The end of the first episode surprised me. Made me enjoy the ep even more. XD

@Rihsa: I think it's more they have to have an open mind about it. You have to really find the characters interesting and funny to like the show I think.

anyways, I was REALLY pleased. I watched it raw first and barely understood anything but I was laughing and everything at so much. Yukiho with her shovel, Haruka hitting the train door, Miki's "owariiii" and flopping over; everything. it was all so perfect and I couldn't have been happier with it so far. As a first episode it's not bad and sure it did the rush intro of everyone (I don't think a slower intro of the characters would work as well for this though), but I think it was pretty good for an introduction episode. The Producer is a pleasant surprise, he's not too bad!

Butyeah, I don't expect this to bring in any new english-speaking fans since it really is a show tailored for the pre-existing fans.

I don't agree. This show is easier or as easy to get into than, say Haruhi Suzumiya's first episode (their amateur film ep AND the real first episode, since the premise of the show isn't even reveal yet) or Lucky Star's (okay... high schoolers talking about food they like? What's this show about again? Nothing? Oh right lol) or Welcome to the NHK (this guy's afraid going outside or something), etc. The show's cast is made up of a broad range of personalities, and watching them all crazily interact is just infectious and got me pumped. The premise is interesting enough and is introduced right away: These girls want to be top idols for their personal reasons.

The show may cater to existing fans (it should or the anime would probably have a hard time being successful I bet), but at the same time I just don't see what the show has that would push away non-IM@S fans (if you're gonna mention in-game references, there aren't that many so far and they aren't that difficult to get). Maybe I haven't been an IM@S fan long enough to understand.

Meh. Intro be what it may, usually you have to get past a rocky first episode, since the premise and characters of the show all have to be introduced at once (well, not all the characters, but a good chunk of them). It's kinda like manga, where I'm not particularly worried if I have to smile and nod my head at the first half tankobon. Maybe I'm more tolerant than most, though.

I mean, it's like you got 22 minutes to introduce a couple of characters and setting, then bam! Problem. When we're dealing with at least 6 hours of show (13 in this case), I'm willing to look past it if they don't do all of that smoothly in the first 22 minutes of it.

I finally got my mockumentary. The first episode is a bit messy but, I enjoyed it and it's only going to get better in future episodes.

I was sorta reminded of Sensei no Ojikan / Doki Doki School Hours with all the characters being jammed into the first episode.  Which makes me think each episode of this series will end up having a simple plot device and we just see each character react to it with their quirks.  As opposed to focusing on individual characters to see how they grow or something.  The next episode should really give us a good idea of the direction they want to take the series I would hope.  If they take the same route Hatsukoi Limited! did by focusing on small groups of characters and their interactions, then in later episodes linking their stories altogether, I think it might be a decent series.

Just gotta see what happens, but so far, not that bad.

I liked the first episode so far. Not the best anime out there right now, but still a great one. I hope we get to see the OP next episode.

I like the documentary format for the first episode, it is really just a fun and entertaining first episode. I definitely want to see where this anime can go, I kinda do want to explore each character carefully, and maybe see Ritsuko-san do a gig as an idol.

Oh and do you guys think we can get the anime its own section on the forum? I think It'll be easier in the long run.

I had to watch it from my iPad too... xD

I really liked it! <3 It wasn't perfect, but it had its good points. The animation was better than I expected; it's pretty cute. And making it a documentary-type thing was a clever way to introduce the cast.

Oh, and that shot of Azusa's boobs. I almost died @//////@

Kotori better get more screen time! And I do not Producer-San in the anime....

So yeah, looking forward to more~
