3D Modelling is hard
Raestloz:
A week back I asked for iM@S character art to sculpt iM@S character for my 3D Modelling class, and... and... well...
Blasphemy is not even enough to describe the end result
It's a blocky mess of unfathomable level of details. I won't even bother showing it to anyone, lest my sin grows so big I can't even touch a computer anymore
Seriously, 3D modelling is hard. Shit. I'm not going to make fun of any 3D models that I see starting right now. And I've got a newfound appreciation to SPORE
Scotty:
Practice.
You can't just make something amazing off the get go.

I thought blender was pretty easy....but yeah, practice makes perfect!

I think I heard somewhere that it takes around ten years to get familiar with something enough to do it well.
So, yeah. Start simple, and just keep in mind what sort of issues you have to deal with. If you know what you're getting into and are still at it... then you've probably found your calling. ^^
Just don't be like the guy who rails against Japanese calling it the worst language ever because he just doesn't want to memorize kanji for his A. ^^
RoninatorMarx:
Modelers of the Warcraft community I've seen who learned to make models from scratch started out by editing and observing in-game models. Eventually said people started branching out from what they've studied and managed to make models (although in a.....rough.....start). From there, practice is their key.
Just my observations, but I hope that helps. Like in drawing, starting off means needing a reference.
