When downloading a catalog you're actually downloading every part of DLC that could be used in the game on your HDD for that month, though the items're locked until you paid for them.
Unlike SP, even if you want to download a new pattern or one piece of accessory you'll be downloading a 300+ mb file.

If you have the catalogs you could watch 30 seconds of other users' replay data though.
