Sounds like you need a better IME. パーティー
Or you need to read up on how to use it.

I remember it took me a while to figure out that to write anything small in my IME, I had to preface it with x or l.

Maybe that's ubiquitous? Try different combinations of (letter)-a or something until you get what you want?

I know how to use a IME that comes with the operating system. I use ことえり, which is Apple's Japanese IME... but yeah, I think I only know the basics and not how to write anything small although I kind of know now (thanks for the tips). However, it's easier with the kana keyboard on iOS despite taking a bit longer to type anything...
But basically, I'm just using it for practice and seeing that it's very similar to a US keyboard with some changes... but I still have a US Bluetooth Keyboard if I need to use it so...
