Your first playthrough is pretty much just a bust XD Like, regardless of what you do. NBGI sets you up for failure, so don't worry about it XD You unlock stuff that helps you do better later on, and you have more money to do stuff, as well. Not to mention there's stuff that you can only buy from the store after you complete the game once, so even if you managed to gather a ton of money I don't think you could buy the most powerful accessories and junk (then again, maybe the PS3 version is different, I donno).
That being said, I failed my first 2 playthroughs, haha. It took me a long time to get the hang of the game.

I just finished my second playthrough earlier today...got the bad ending on both...*lesigh*
GOING FOR AT LEAST ONE AWARD NEXT TIME, LET'S GO! (OCEAN BLUE, OCEAN BLUE!)
My first unit was BananaMILK which featured Mami as leader with Miki and Takane as support.
Their first single was My Best Friend, followed by Kosmos Cosmos, Megare, Ai Like Hamburger, and Do-Dai.
No Awards...

I know some Japanese but was def not prepared for this game...
Second playthrough was a wee bit better. This time the unit was LuckyLEMON with Takane as the original leader (later switched to Hibiki) and Yukiho.

I finished with Hibiki as leader but still didn't get Beyond the Stars...Wai?
Also helping my non- Japanese speaking im@s-fan friends (I have those now, YEAH!) with their idol groups. One friend has the group CherryBomb which has Makoto (leader), Hibiki, and Yayoi. The other friend, whose group I'm determined to get at least one award with, is called SpicyPeach, and has Haruka (leader), Makoto, and Yukiho.

I just wish they could be in my idol group (IORI, MIKI, YUKIHO GROUP AAAAAAGH)
My next group has yet to be named (gonna continue with the food theme...), but it's going to be Chihaya, Yayoi and Miki.
It's good to see that everyone is enjoying their games~ :D

If by friends, you mean, friends you know and regularly physically see on a regular basis... then wow. That's better than I've ever had.
Also, you could stop by the gameplay thread to try to get a better ending. You can make a Good Ending on your first try, but getting the True Ending on a fair-play first run... well, maybe it's possible, however infinitesimally small...
