Should I spread the word?

I don't see why you shouldn't. Go for it.

You could also create a club on MyAnimeList. There, you could rake in thousands of club members all for that purpose. Heck, even my profile's comments look like an advertisement center.
Though, there is already a club that links back directly to here on MAL, only that it is a little undermanned right now.

wut.
I actually don't really get people into it, though there seems to be a slight interest it in other places I go to because of the anime. Since it shows up a lot in fanart and the like, people see it as "oh, that thing is getting an anime, wonder what it's about." Maybe I'll make my boyfriend watch the show so he can actually get it :V (he still thinks its some dating sim like thing derp).

It's more about iM@S not being known rather than being okay about the age: he had never even seen how the idols look like at the moment I had him listen to THE iDOLM@STER for the first time, let alone what iM@S is. The collective voice of the 9 idols does sound less like adults and more like below average teens.
Also, the presentation of iM@S itself does look a helluva lot like dating sims. Without putting a little effort into knowing about what iM@S is, people can easily mistake iM@S for a dating sim
I've always asked myself a question: "How do I explain to people what iM@S is?". I still can't get a quick and just answer

I usually say, "It's a simulation game where you raise an a girl to be a number one popstar. It's cool because you can watch her live shows, pick her costumes, and get to know her."

Something I said a long time ago...
Take Monster Rancher. Remove monsters. Replace with idols and good music. Also, monster fights = auditions.
Might not do ya, though.

Well, probably it's more about me being not confident enough to show I like iM@S than trying to explain what it is. My family don't really have a good understanding of "japanese culture"
I usually start with "iM@S is kinda like a group singer" or something, as I have only the music collection, but it gets harder to explain from there
