The iDOLM@STER: relations (Volume 1, Get!)

The iDOLM@STER relations is an _awesome manga by Yumehito Ueda (or maybe you might recognize his wallpapers with 'Genocide Kiss' on it).  An English translation started back in the old forum (I believe???), but was never finished.

I noticed Cael the other day had a script of the whole thing translated, and messaged him about it, and asked him if I could use it and typeset (the whole) manga.  And well, here we are.

Anyways, I'll (we'll??) post updates here on the chapters, and how everything is going.  This is honestly one of the first "real" things to type set, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to post.

I pulled a sample page up and did a test of type set between two fonts that I was slightly amused by, so I'll let you guys take a look at it and see which font you find more appealing or something.

@Cael: I re-put in honorific(s) to kind of keep it consistent with the already English releases and I"m sorry if (at least for the test page) I changed some of the wording on the translation, I found myself absently doing this until I uploaded it....

General Rules on taking the manga:

(Obviously) Don't take it and publish it as if you did the translations and all the stuff in the manga.  There's been lots of work gone into doing all of this.
If you spot an error or like to point a few things out, just post it here or message me; I'll address the problems or anything of the sort.

Updates/Progress:
Feb 20: Volume 1, get!
Feb 05: _{psssssst, this is still alive if you're wondering}.  Vol. 1 release would have been a month ago if I wasn't so busy during winter break and then school started again...  Almost done type-setting ch. 4, have to clean at least half of it though.  The beginning of ch. 4 is about... 102 pages into the First Volume, and it has 176 pages iirc.  Chapter 5, 6, and 7 aren't too long either.  I hope for an end of Feb, beginning of March release of Vol. 1 [:  Although, I have to re-edit the first 90 pages because I changed fonts to a much more standard manga group font...

Volume 1 of Relations released!

Probably countless of nights staying up really late, and I can now say that Volume 1 of Yumehito's The iDOLM@STER Relations can now be downloaded and read!  It's been what, two months since I started this?

Lots and lots of thanks goes to Cael for letting me use his translations!  You should thank him too!

The font that was eventually used in the end was somewhat of a "standard" group one.  I met someone in my recent JPN class, and he is the head of his own scanlation group, so he pointed some things out to me and showed me the fonts his group used.  I realized Manga Temple was a bit of a hard read on the eyes, and painfully went back and edited 50+ pages to the correct font (by the time I changed fonts, I was already halfway through chapter 2).

I would sit here and lecture you on general rules, but I'm sure you already know them.  (i'll post them up on the front post anyway, please read them if you get a chance).

I just have one thing to point out though.  Please do not put this up on manga stream sites (mangafox etc.), it's not quite polished up that I feel comfortable with releasing it on there.  If you do want to (maybe?) please just ask, and I'll take sometime to go through the scans again and fix a few things. (ie. maybe put in half of the SFXs that are missing because I got really lazy.../get cael to translate them)

Now.  enjoy reading relations, and I hope you do enjoy it as much as I did! [:

Good job, also don't worry about the quality, it looks fine imo.
Sure the formatting's bit  awkward at times with panels with less wide panels but otherwise you're doing a great job.

Also, it looks and reads a lot better than this other group's release.

Reading through some of it, I sometimes thought, "Did I really write that?" Then I looked and I did. Well, there's still room for improvement on my end of the scale... ^_^;;;

Fair bit of warning if you're gonna finish Volume 2:

That was the single, worst line I have ever translated in that entire thing, and it came unsurprisingly around nine hours or so before my flight left for vacation. Did I mention I hadn't packed yet by that time, or had any sleep? Gech...

Well, whatever. Bonus points to whoever can pick out any references. I think I may've tried too hard on some of them, sorry. ^^;

EDIT: I apologize profusely, page 53. The name of the prefecture is Hyougo, not Hyougou (with the extra u).

I had no intention of adding it to a manga website (read comment in release post).  I found it kind of weird that it was uploaded by whoever this group is.  I checked it, and it looks a hell lot better than the cleaning I could do lol.  If you want to follow them, then go ahead, looks like their translations are slighty different (although, I feel like deja vu when I go through it...).  I suppose I can keep suspicions, but I'll be chill about it.  According to their first chapter release post though, they were talking about the group who subbed it back then, so they probably have no clue about this release.

First, I lol'd for some reason at the IRC chat.  Anyways.

If it's the page itself that looks bigger than the rest (higher resolution) that's my fault for not catching it because I had one page that was like that in the raws, so if I missed others, I'm not too surprised... I had about a million of problems when it came to type-setting the whole thing, but I'm trying to trek through lol.

Cleaning sucks as per usual, I just get lazy with half of it.  (there's one page that's really badly cleaned that you can see some of the text box missing lol.  you get a free cookie if you can tell me the page).  If you want you can clean the pages for me because I'm lazy lol.  just kidding.

... You do realize that you're asking for another translation pass, right? With the associated changes to the script since I won't be able to help myself? ^^; Well, sound effects aren't my thing, I haven't really done a lot of them, but I can give it a shot. Don't know if I'll have to find a specific dictionary for them, though.

But sometimes, there's only so many ways to translate a given line. Or rather, sometimes there's only so many ways that are immediately obvious, especially if you're keeping closer to the literal meaning. Little things that can be translated directly and still sound good are going to sound the same. Things that need to be torn down and reconstructed, not so much. I seriously doubt they know of this translation.

Thankfully, I can say that I translated the volumes without having read any translation previously, so I know I'm not affected by another translation.
